Welcome to Autumn 2023 Day 02, 1 Sep, Bruxelles - Paris - Morlaix - Roscoff, onto ferry

@jon couldn't this more easily be done by increasing airport fees? (And you are right about the frequent flyers, but that seems even less likely)

    @casseagull @grivettcarnac do you think so? In Europe, it is just the Germanic countries that don't like home ownership: https://www.statista.com/statistics/246355/home-ownership-rate-in-europe/

    plans? Just figuring it out here. I think we'll do chicken, corn-on-the-cob and baked potato.

    I put some chicken in tandoori spices and yoghurt an hour ago so that should add some value.

    What are you having? (or had – in timezones where supper is over)

    chrisbegley,
    @chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

    @ottaross grilled sausages with sauteed red cabbage. I need a bit of beer for the cabbage, so can't let the rest go to waste

    A few thoughts on an urge I've long had to pursue my favourite movie/TV cliché IRL. It's the scene we all know – coffee and pie at the counter of a diner restaurant.

    The venues for living that experience are getting scarce in modern times, but I can think of four or five places that still remain in my city.

    I'm imagining a project to hunt them down. If I manage to pull it off I'll hashtag them with .

    chrisbegley,
    @chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

    @lanastewart @geekingirl in all seriousness, I do not think this government can go any further. In terms of federal action, what more can they do without guaranteeing getting voted out.
    The alternative is to do even more now and have it all scrapped in 2 years. Or do 70% and have a realistic chance of keeping that going. My vote is with the 70%

    Renfe says it is investing €15 million in rolling stock to allow its trains to run into Portugal

    • End of 2024: beyond Badajoz to Évora 🇵🇹, connecting to CP trains there

    • 2027: finally running Porto-Vigo-La Coruña with electric rather than diesel trains (even though the line is already electrified)

    • extending Madrid-Badajoz to Lisboa (date unknown)

    • Madrid-Porto, via Salamanca, Vilar Formoso

    I’ll believe it when I see it, honestly.

    Hey European & American friends who use tools and do building, repairs, DIY – are Robertson screws common in your area?

    Are Robertson screwdrivers common in European toolboxes?

    In Canada I suspect that 99% of people who have tools would have Robertson screwdrivers in their toolbox. At least the red & green (#2, #1) sizes. The more intrepid will have the yellow and black (#0, #3) sizes too.

    Poll to follow…

    chrisbegley,
    @chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

    @ottaross they will. I have a full set of Robertsons which have moved from Berlin to Munich to Boston and not been used. I asked a few people in Germany and none had heard of them.

    This article touches on a real issue, but renaming HR to "people and culture" isn't going to do anything. It comes from the same place of bullshit as renaming "slave" to "enslaved person." No mention of raising salaries or hiring on a faster turnaround like the private sector. I beg the NGO space to stop being completely useless. https://usa.streetsblog.org/2023/07/26/to-make-transit-work-we-need-to-make-transit-agencies-better-workplaces

    Things I shouldn't be doing: doodling crayon of the world divided into superstates in the 22nd century.

    (The EU, to the Donbas and Gomel, with the UK back in. The US. A pan-Hispanic-American union. ASEAN. China, with Taiwan regrettably annexed. The Arab League, with Israel having collapsed. India. The East African Federation. A Francophone Sahelian union. A Francophone Central African union. Brazil, Japan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, and Bangladesh stay separate; united Korea is a buffer state.)

    VLB Sommerfest was yesterday, and I took part in a small tour of their research brewery. Very interesting to see, they work at a fairly small scale, with 3 brew systems with capacities of 5hl, 2hl and 5 liters (sic!) each. The 5hl system consists of two mash tuns (one heated, can be used for adjunct cooking), one lauter tun, one kettle and one whirlpool, and is designed to emulate as many different brew systems of commercial breweries at a smaller scale.

    chrisbegley,
    @chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

    @akrennmair Gingko Bioworks here in Boston is a research manufacturing org for biologics. They have fleets of 1L fermenters so they can run projects with hundreds of variables. I commented that they looked like the world's largest test brewery :)
