First time on the Byron Ave remodel(ish). The dump outs are shit but nice sections. Going to watch the 10k at Dows Lake where they turn up towards Bronson Ave to cross the bridge in case anyone else in is watching. Big bike is hard to miss and the kid is asleep inside

So the NCC doesn’t seem to have posted on their website that the bike weekend closures are NOT running this weekend, so FYI for those of you who do not follow them on Twitter or instagram 🙃 Met some folks at the park who were riding on the parkway after 8 AM with kids who had to get the fuck off quickly when people ended up driving behind them

I don't want to brag but Ottawa is absolutely killing it in signups for 2024. Both the highest number of signups and the most total slots of any community in Canada.

Why does the press always use that? It is not like you ever read “Sean, an avid driver”

I do not love that a lot of the same driving mentality permeates how people move around on crowded MUPs in If you were in the group of bros loudly ringing your bells in unison to get people walking to move right off the path so you all could blast through the middle so fast I could almost feel you on my left shoulder, well I’ll tell you to fuck off in person when you’re stopped next time too. Slow the hell down and wait a singular minute once in a while

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

It’s fairly intuitive that when you’re approaching people walking from behind, and people are also walking towards you on the other side, you can adjust your speed before hand, gauge when people walk past each other, let people know in some fashion, but I guess intuitive is very fucking subjective. I get it, shits very crowded even on week days. But you’re not special. If you have an emergency than call a fucking ambulance, otherwise I’m gunna yell at you

‘It’s unbelievable the difference a path has made’: how volunteers are building a cycle network a yard at a time
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/16/cycle-network-strawberry-line-somerset-volunteers
The Strawberry Line network of paths in Somerset has found a way to speed up planning permission and harness the goodwill of the community

Oddly, there are no records of motoring organisations getting volunteers to build roads. They just expect everyone else to pay for them...

Last Sunday, I hung out at the Hartwells Locks in . I counted over 100 people with a bike crossing the locks in 20 minutes. That is >300 an hour.

Lots of people with e-bikes now and several people struggling getting the bike on to the locks. This definitely needs improvement.

Lots of older folks, clearly touring for the morning or the day, so happy to see that. Our pathways allow for great routes with little interference from car traffic.

A person in a blue shirt cycling on a bike (that appears a bit too small). Another person is looking away with his arms crossed. An historic lockmaster's house is seen in the background.
Three people are crossing locks at a canal. the old winch system is visible. One person has a a basket on the front and a milk crate at the back. The other two cyclists are walking their bike too, in shirts and T shirts. Lots of green in the background.
Over a dozen people with bicycles are visible in a a setting of trees and locks at the Rideau canal. Several people are waiting to cross, while others just crossed and are regrouping.

Hey or folks around that are interested in the idea of a but have never seen one up close or ridden one. I’m not an organizer but found this on instagram and will probably try and make it out for the show and tell with our two e-cargo bikes. More people need to see them everyday in all the places, in all the situations, for all the reasons people need to move around and live. Please share and come out!

Wild how it took so long to do something so simple. Not that I long to visit the byward Market but Majors Hill or Rideau Falls were rarely on the list of destinations if this was the direction of travel. But this makes basic access possible especially with the bridge open and the new NCC lookout on the +50% complete?? status

The kid ate shit twice on a bike ride of less than 2 km because this city gives zero shits about wildly large curb cuts (and everything else). The fact that Britannia intersection by Beachconers is as horrid as it is being, I’d argue one of the most busy intersection for folks not in a car is proof enough. And the entrance to the kids school is soooooo bad and busted up that its almost impossible to enter on a bike and the kid ate it right in front of his own school

Step-daughter of a friend of ours saw the 11-yr old kid get killed in Rockland, by someone driving a school bus, while they were riding their bike. What the fuck…

I’ve said it a bunch of times but I completely changed the route we take to the kids school which is only 1.2 kms away. We take a ~ 2 km route to avoid the utter mayhem that takes over people during drop offs and pick ups, esp school bus and transport vans

MichaelPorter, to Ottawa

"The school bus driver wasn't hurt, police said.”

Such a stupid thing to say.

Aside from the obvious bus>>bike aspect, I am sure that the bus driver was, in fact, harmed by the incident.

A road has to be closed for possibly a week bc a driver (not ‘a car’) does something stupid. Just imagine someone on an would cause a road to be closed for a week and it would be the most read article on CTV for days with the traffic trolls out in full force.

Did the Ottawa River-Pinecrest Creek-Experimental Farm-Canal MUP loop this afternoon. Decided to stay west of the Canal, which was a mistake, but super nice ride other than that Parliament-War Museum segment (when will behind Parliament reopen??).

Next time I think I should cross the canal, take the Alexandra Bridge to the path on the north side of the Ottawa and cross back on the Commanda (which I think was closed today).
