This week at Macworld, my Stay Foolish column is all about how Apple's best improvements are often its most invisible. So much work spent on things that only ever get noticed when they donā€™t work right. (And remember, @sixcolors members can read the whole story for free over there too!) https://www.macworld.com/article/2348650/apple-invisible-breakthroughs-ipad-pro-oled-computational-photography-ai.html

@dmoren Iā€™m so conflicted with this stuff, especially with the camera example you give. I take waaaay more photos with my iPhone than with my camera, but I like the photos taken with my camera waaaay more. The iPhoneā€™s smarts are incredible, and I think the right choices so I capture SOMETHINGā€¦ and yet I donā€™t LOVE the very-processed, crispy look I get from the iPhone.

Why THE FUCK would you advertise a feature that skeevy men use to violate the boundaries and equanimity of women and other vulnerable people using a grab that feels exactly like an example of that? Like, Iā€™m not making the argument that DMs are bad and shouldnā€™t exist (in this post), but why apparently lean into their worst feature??

craiggrannell, (edited ) to Emulation
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

I see with RetroArch on iOS, the ā€œ#emulation is illegalā€ rubbish has clawed its way back into the daylight. Emulators are legal. Yes, many files people load into them may not be legit but that doesnā€™t make the tech itself illegal any more than it makes e-readers, music players and video players illegal.

Maybe people should concentrate more on encouraging publishers to provide legal routes to play (and buy) old games than spreading rubbish about emulators.

#retrogaming

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell The whole thing has resonances with ā€œno person is illegalā€. Obviously Iā€™m not drawing a direct equivalence, but that some people in migration may enter illegally doesnā€™t make any person illegal.

Also, Iā€™d LOVE to see some sort of codification of abandonware laws, similar to the right to repair movement.

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@CTD @craiggrannell I do appreciate there are complexities about, for example, rights to characters or game mechanics that may be governed by other laws. Itā€™s not simple, and I believe in artists being able to make a living from their art. But it feels like it could be achievable with enough will and thought.

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@CTD @craiggrannell Which is why a law that says these rights default out in different ways to now is the solution. So that you donā€™t have to get these rights; they revert to a new more open licence in law. Which sounds like The State Ripping Rights from Hard-working Creators, but thatā€™s just what copyright law does. Itā€™s just that this would need to be over a shorter term and with other caveats.

Unsolicited recommendation for a hotel in central London. This is seconds from Tottenham Court Road, was a decent price, and justā€¦ everything I want, nothing I donā€™t. Itā€™s cheap, I think, because itā€™s all subterranean, so no windows, but the bedā€™s comfy, its keyless entry via an app (smooth process, and you donā€™t even have to speak to anyone at reception šŸ˜„), and super-convenient. Iā€™ll be back! https://www.zedwellhotels.com/tottenhamcourtroad

@gedeonm Rightttt? I suspect it doesnā€™t appeal to everyone, but it absolutely scratches the itch for me. Simple, clean, natural, soft lighting. Click through for more pics!

@gedeonm Ivory seems to have eaten my reply, or you might get two. Was okay in my room, there was a shelf and plug at the foot of the bed. Not ideal, but okay! And: the optional mirror light round the corner in the bathroom could act as a gentle nightlight if youā€™d like. (It doesnā€™t photograph well on iPhone. Looks more like the official pic irl.)

danielpunkass, to random
@danielpunkass@mastodon.social avatar

Given the widespread reports of Apple ID problems, corroborated by articles in reputable publications, often by victims of the very problem, it's absurd that Apple's status page reflects no problems. There should be systemic change to prevent this: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass Itā€™s also bad security practice. It affected me, so I checked the status page. If it had showed an error, Iā€™d have been much happier knowing it was a legitimate bug, not a security compromise, and this is the behaviour I want big tech companies to train their users to expect. (But honestly the fact that they havenā€™t commented on it makes me think it WAS some kind of security issue, which may yet be ongoing. cc @glennf)

Iā€™m getting much better at not self-censoring. If youā€™re my friend, youā€™re gonna get occasional lovebombings and a constant drip-drip-drip of memes and random thoughts from when you pop into my head and make me smile. Never be afraid to politely tell me to tone it down; Iā€™d so much rather hear it from you than from the poisonous little voice in my head that tells me youā€™re tired of me.

What would you consider as the most recognizable bitmap fonts in tech history?

Iā€™m imagining stuff like:

  • the arcade/Atari font
  • Chicago (Mac, then iPod)
  • VCR/video equipment fonts
  • Minecraft font
  • IBM PC fonts (MDA, VGA, stuff like that)
  • perhaps System font from Windows 3.x
  • Commodore 64, just because of the sheer popularity of the machine

What am I missing?

@mwichary Agree! In Britain, for example, people of a certain age will respond to the Amstrad typeface (here shown in Locoscript).

@flargh @jackbrewster @ianbetteridge Itā€™s amusing to me that itā€™s not even cool and hipster and modern and e-ink. Itā€™s just an ancient three-line LCD in a barely-better-than-3D-printed box. šŸ˜„šŸ˜„

Request that would be slightly weird anywhere except the fediverse:

Literally asking for a friend!

I have a friend whoā€™s a phenomenal artist who might be interested in getting known for #furry #porn, especially for building a lilā€™ community that would let them do #commissions. What should I tell them to tempt them to Mastodon? Where should they be posting, what should they be doing? Who should they be following?

ā€œā€˜Nā€™ is for neonā€

Snapped this in passing today. I wanted to stop and play with the shutter speed so I didnā€™t get the strobing, but decided in retrospect that not only did I quite like the effect but that I also appreciated the reminder that sometimes photography can be about the narrative of taking a photo ā€” at least for the photographer ā€” rather than the technical excellence of the photo itself.

Weather was beautiful yesterday morning so I set up my desk in the garden to work for the first time this year.

By the time I got round to taking photos the sun had hidden behind clouds but still interesting to show, hopefully. I had my nice camera set up with my Elgato Prompter, which I use for calls.

Could see it even in bright sun! šŸ˜ But the panel is orientated such that I couldnā€™t use polarising sunglasses. šŸ˜• Had to fit an ND1000 filter when it was sunny since I love shooting wide open! šŸŒž

What the camera saw: me sitting in my garden in a dark pink corduroy jacket, with a blurred background. I have a lav mic clipped to my jacket and Iā€™m wearing AirPods.
