Bit of history

First ever

Me sat next to RMS

It was my 27th birthday

I'm 51 tomorrow

That's how long we have been doing Open Source

cloudguy,

@finn the smell in the room from damp wet geeks who had only left Delerium eight hours previously....

cloudguy,

@finn over 30m companies use my Open Source code commercially in 219 countries

Plus pFSense, IPFire, OPNSense, Endian all use my base code

I'm the old man of Linux security

cloudguy, (edited )

@boilingsteam

What RMS likes and dislikes nobody actually cares. I spent hundreds of hours with him. It was insufferable sometimes.

He is an educated sometimes charming man who I still respect but sometimes it grinded.

He did, how ever, sing me Happy Birthday on mic to 1100 people at FOSDEM once.

is always my birthday weekend

I am sad to not be able to safely attend FOSDEM this year. There are so many people I want to spend time with.

However, as is the case with hundreds or maybe thousands of us past attendees, our immune systems can't handle the risk of such a crowded event that makes no effort to implement a health and safety plan.

SARS-CoV-2 viral load levels in Belgium this January were 43x what they were in July, as indicated by highly reliable wastewater sampling.

Safe events can still happen: @phpledge

cloudguy,

@downey @phpledge

I am the same reason

Only just come off steroids last week and I am not risking even public transport in the UK yet

Andrew Tate is a stain on mankind but The Guardian suggesting he is just part of a reaction to feminism is correct.

There had to be a massive huge overdue correction.

But to align it to Tate is silly.

It's just what happens when sensible folk get sick of a broken tainted narrative without substance in any situation.

A pushback to femininism and the whole over egging of diversity crap was always going to happen.

Everyone should be heard.

We don't have to like what people say

Life happens

cloudguy,

@samir

No

The world is a horrid place

Nobody is automatically entitled

Literally nobody

Thankfully the world shakes stuff out eventually

cloudguy,

@samir Tate is an arsehole

There is currently a potato in the bedroom that my 6yo daughter has named Dave. Until this moment Dave has been treated with lots of care and respect... but now I see that she's put a 99p sticker on Dave. I am so confused.

Sorry, Dave. I think your time in the spotlight will soon be up.

cloudguy,

@The_LynnyLyn so my 10 year old has a Butternut Squash called Skutternut Bosch.

cloudguy,

@The_LynnyLyn I do think it shows intelligence

And also a great deal of play sense

Happy children

Meeting with the Police preceded by a pot of tea in the car, killing time working on laptop

cloudguy,

@nowster they're doing ok

It's all at Chief Constable level now, the new CC Catherine Roper

Amazon are a potent issue and brand

Given 24 news outlets are waiting to cover the story it's not a small issue.

Jailtime

cloudguy,

@Slash909uk I wish it was...

I have two car kettles

This one is older, recently repaired with hot glue. Works far quicker - about 8 mins to brew.

Other one takes 35 mins - chinese rubbish

cloudguy,

@nowster

I only just realised this

I bought this Acer in NYC and added an SSD same afternoon.

Now have a car charger so the laptop and it stay in the car so I never need to think twice.

So when it does it's always apt-get time

Was talking to two other parents from my eldest kid's school tonight about keeping kids safe online. Explained my eldest (now 34 years old) was the original guinea pig in 2000 when we started proper internet filtering with Smoothwall.

How my kids now don't stand a chance and everything is monitored, logged, scanned and reported on, tech built by Daddy.

When I was asked how much it cost, I said nothing, just get an old PC or tiny PC or PI and you can be up in an hour was met with stares....

18+ cloudguy,

@Dragon

This is a homeserver running Squid, Dansguardian, enforcing signon via 2FA (which is very cool for a homeserver) with full context logging.

Samba, CUPS etc etc

Two interfaces

Onboard GigE facing via ethernet to consumer router (NAT-T) and then outbound subnet out via USB ethernet into a Wireless router running in AP mode.

DHCP from the USB to all internal.

But in 1998 if I'd said here a 3Tb server for sub £200 your head would have exploded
