Just a note here... I personally believe that a misunderstanding of can lead organizations to prioritize delivery speed over quality and work sustainability.

This might happen when success metrics are poorly chosen, focusing more on "how much" is delivered rather than "how" or "with what quality". I think when the manifest was leveraged, the idea was to deliver value continuously, but not at the expense of quality or the team's health. ++

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@airwhale @lobocode In my experience it doesn't matter what terminology is used. Once popularized, any theory will be misunderstood, misused and misrepresented by the industry. Be it Agile, DevOps, REST, AI, etc.

You're right though, Agile is not about speed. Agile is about delivering better quality by being able to adapt to change.

Agile may even be slower, and unfortunately it's a lot harder and takes a lot more effort to implement, than lots of organizations think when they copycat it.

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@caiodark It does leave a lot open to interpretation, although I don't think that's a significant contributing factor. The agile manifesto is not a methodology in and by itself. It leaves the implementation details to orgs by design.

I'd be more inclined to pin this issue on organisational (in)capabilities. Like @airwhale mentioned, actually implementing Agile in complex environments is often underestimated. In combination with the wrong incentives, trust issues and lack of knowledge.

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@caiodark @airwhale I do understand your sentiment, and the scope of this issue makes it hard to summarize it here.

However, more often than not Hanlon's Razor applies. Enterprises struggle as they would like to adopt modern practices, but the teams don't (and can't) operate in isolation, so there will always be friction as they find out how to make this digital transformation work for them.

The latter part you mention is the result of what I described as the commercialisation of Scrum.

Is there a Dutch charity that would help folks who can't afford it with dental care in the Netherlands?

Boosts welcome.

(Yes I googled and did not find one that would be still active. So please refrain from "here is what I googled" results. Obviously not for me, but - for reasons - that's something I want to donate to.)

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@vicgrinberg I'm not aware of any charity that fits what you're looking for unfortunately.

Maybe your municipality or related charities that help this demographic might be able to point you in the right direction.

Alternatively, and this might not be something you're looking for, but maybe there are some advocacy organizations that strive to get this covered under basic healthcare insurance or something alike.

Hope you're able to find something, good luck!

We just released important security patches for versions 4.1, 4.2, nightly, and the already discontinued 3.5 and 4.0.

If you are using nightly, you can upgrade to the 4.3.0-nightly.2024-02-15-security tag to get the patches.

Please upgrade as soon as possible!

@MastodonEngineering The official web interface clients show an upgrade notice to the admins. Is this warning also exposed in the API? (e.g. are third party clients able to display these warnings easily?)

It is the year 2024, tech companies introduce generative AI that was popularized in 2022 into Notepad.

Meanwhile none of the big vendors support exporting a calendar event as an .ics file, an open standard format that was published in a 2009 RFC.

Priorities I guess..

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

Lol, so on the topic of keeping oneself busy with a

I leveraged to optimize transcoding of videos in my library. Which (after solving the NIC issue) now absolutely hammers the HDD's on my NAS.

That NAS has still been running my core services like so that it wouldn't die in case I borked my cluster.

But since the HDD's are so busy, those core services are now very much unresponsive.

The result, hyperfast transcoding and I'm unable to turn off the lights. 😂

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@AngryAnt Not with my setup but good one, that could have been an issue otherwise!

I actually see my disk utilization maxing out. There's a dedicated direct link between my NUC and NAS that's separate from the rest of the network, this allows me to use SMB encryption/signing for the normal network and avoid the overhead on that trusted link.

Home Assistant isn't affected by the heavy transcoding traffic.

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@AngryAnt Cool! Any specific reason why you chose iSCSI over SMB/NFS? I was looking at using that as well but I can't remember what made me go with a different solution. (I should really document more of the decisions that lead me here)

Initially my NAS was a storage solution, then I started using it to run selfhosted stuff and now I'm migrating everything away from it.

Cluster is not yet stable so I'm keeping my core services there for now.

@jorijn@toot.community avatar

I've just finished migrating toot.community to Hetzner. It's now operating on Talos Linux with a managed Kubernetes setup across several bare-metal servers.

Utilizing managed Kubernetes on VMs proved to be increasingly costly. While DigitalOcean's managed experience is great, a shift in strategy is needed to maintain financial stability due to the gradual decline in donations each month.

As always, it's a financial trade-off between being cared for, and taking care of.

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@jorijn I'm kinda interested in how you decided to manage the database. As this was previously something you'd rather have as a managed service IIRC.

Did you need to change a lot of the orchestration? Since Talos involves management through an API instead of SSH access.. 🤔

jpostma,
@jpostma@clusterfucks.nl avatar

@jorijn Cool stuff on both of those! Talos is nice indeed, played around with that a few years ago, if my cluster was based on K8s I think I'd use that as well.

As for the decision of running the PG DB on the NVMe, good one! The distributed Hetzner volumes aren't really fit for that.

Thanks for sharing!
