not sure how I never thought to google this before, but today I learned why ctrl-s/ctrl-q exist, other than to make using the terminal 100 times more difficult.

Fascinating bit of computer history!

I never knew this until recently, but the Pennsylvania Railroad used to run a 21 acre slaughterhouse right in west

“By 1885, the 21-acre site housed cattle pens for 7,300 head, sheep pens for 10,000, hog pens of similar capacity as the sheep pens, covered sheds for about 500 cows and calves, the “main office and exchange building,” stables for holding and selling horses, the abattoir, and the “fat and reducing department.”

Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of The Maleficent Seven by Cameron Johnston and let's face it I got it mostly because of the title. Also, it turns out I enjoy things where the bad guys are forced to be good guys because things are just so really annoying to them. (Remember, I love lawful evil characters, and the reasons are related.) While I have a copy, I haven't read it yet, what with me only having had it for about 5 minutes.

Feel free to claim one, and/or tell other people!

“I found that across all three neighborhoods, English dominates the linguistic landscape. Of the total 3,356 signs, about 62% were in English, while 24% were in Spanish and 13% were written in both Spanish and English. Only 29 signs – less than 1% – were multilingual, or written in three or more languages. Among these, Vietnamese was the most common third language.”

We're back to my recurring nightmare of making it easy for a non-technical client to edit a static website generated using .

Are there any good solutions? Or am I going to end up writing my own solution after many painful hours with other people's janky solutions?

If you know of a non-technical user successfully editing a static website, how are they doing it?

EDIT: I'll only use open source solutions I can self-host, but happy to hear about proprietary options.

@skyfaller I have thought about this in the past. I know there are CMSses designed to work with static sites, like this one for , though I’ve never evaluated any.

There’s got to be something similar for
, though cost may be a concern if it’s an enterprise focused tool.

@skyfaller oh! at a past job, we used the netlify cms, which seems decent. It’s apparently been renamed and is open source, and is not restricted to netlify like I assumed.

I recently attempted to explain to my daughter how the phone used to work, and I’ve never felt like more of a fossil.

I had to explain what the dial tone is. She’s never heard a dial tone.

Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which I have but have not read. And I keep thinking it's a werewolf book, but that's only because of the title. If you read it, please let me know what you think!

In the meanwhile, feel free to claim one, or tell other people about the giveaway, or both! Or neither, I mean, that is entirely up to you.

The world is awful right now, and people are stressed, so see if you can't do something kind for someone.

So why try to predict the future at all if it’s so difficult, so nearly impossible? Because making predictions is one way to give warning when we see ourselves drifting in dangerous directions. Because prediction is a useful way of pointing out safer, wiser courses. Because, most of all, our tomorrow is the child of our today.

The one good thing you can say about the American Healthcare system is that you can pay bills online without creating a user account.

However, I have a feeling it’s not because they care about our convenience, but there’s some technical reason they can’t require user accounts.

“The best thing about the fediverse is that it will actually enable an explosion of better social products, for lots of reasons but one in particular: it allows for so many more of them. Forget the hand-wavy protocol stuff for a second — one of the best things about embracing ActivityPub is that it sticks a crowbar into a single Voltron-ic product like Facebook or Twitter or Snapchat and pries it apart into its component pieces, each one ripe for innovation and new ideas”
