To accompany the plethora of “how to …” articles, tutorials, recipes and videos, we also need “why or why not to …” also.

Thanks for reading my “TED Thought”, all “20 seconds” of it - 😉.

"Notability" is such a fascinating social construct. :)’

I guess 2024 Nobel prize winner Katalin Karikó doesn’t stand a not(oriety/ability) chance of getting a Wikipedia page as she was not widely published & even got “demoted”. 🤦🏾‍♀️

My serendipitous timeline:

  1. Journalists say, “AI system that is ‘imprinted’ on text generated by fallible, biased human beings, does not discriminate because of ‘data sourced from fallible, biased human beings.”
2 Economist uses excels “autofill” function to “generate” data for a published paper and saw no issue doing that!

Carl Sagan prescient words, “We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science & technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science & technology.”

ACCESSIBILITY in Design Tool applications

I'm a Designer using a 12 inch screen tablet with super computer CPU and chips.

For readability, accessibility and usability ...

  1. Why are the screen components leaving so much unused screen space?
  2. Why are there no alternative & resizable fonts? There's plenty of space.
  3. Why are there no other colour themes, with high contrast? Can barely read the small, grey font.

Current “AI”/statistical inference (SI) tech represented by Machine “imprinting” (It’s not continuously learning/updating, with only 1 time update), Large Language Models (LLM) & conversation “chat” interfaces are decimating cultural, social & ethical assumptions (statements taken as facts, without proof) AKA “norms”.
As a society, we’re not prepared for impact of rethinking, reconsidering & updating our current human practices & conventions with a non-human machine as a participant.

When someone says, “make it easy to do …”, what they mean is, “make it match/align with my current mental model/perspective/expectation” I.e. their “map”, regardless of the existing, actual territory.

Bias is “misapplication” of individual & collective socio-cultural maps & refusing to update them.

The worst map, often used in key decision making is the “assumption” - A statement (map) taken as true (territory), without proof. Think about that, “map” accepted as “territory”, without proof!

I keep seeing people state they switched their browser from “implementation A” to “implementation B” - not naming names as that’s not required..

I use, on the daily:

  1. Firefox for developers, Firefox nightly and Firefox.
  2. Safari - MacOS 12,14 and IOS 11,15,17
  3. Chrome/Edge/Vivaldi, etc.

Curious question: What’s the reason for only limiting use to one specific browser implementation?

I’m tempted to wrap all’a ActivityPub “whatever, waving hands” in abstraction with a tech-flavor I can use for a personal federating instance. Really don’t want to manage a database, DHCP, DNS & etc. I only want to use FTP-ish protocol to transfer content to 1 or more syndicating server(s) I choose.

Opinion: When I hear people say “clean code” or “clean lines in a digital design” where “clean” is an adjective for clarifying a noun, it’s always made me viscerally “itchy”.

What I’ve observed as their intent is the noun they’re describing (digital code or design) is clear & unambiguous in its meaning. But you can only be 100% sure of that by getting feedback from & really listening to intended & unintended target audience. Otherwise, adding the adjective is an opinion or worse, an assumption.

Science tries to provide a rational, deterministic statement to explain why+how “a thing”™️ happens.

That does not mean “a thing”™️ did not exist before the “science”, it was only not explained or understood. There would have been stories, oral histories, myths & superstitions radiating round “a thing”™️.

Sometimes “a thing”™️ doesn’t have only 1 rational, deterministic statement to explain it as its effect is contextual & conditional. Science needs to go beyond the singular, linear explanation.

I’m cracking up in laughter & frustration experimenting with using Tablet+stylus for activities.

  • figma browser & app, a decent visual graphics expression tool, is the same experience & better cos can also use a stylus + touch screen.
  • Then I tried StackBlitz & CodeSandbox. All I wanted to do was copy & paste really simple example & WTH. I could only make painful progress by adding the keyboard.

I cackled seeing this article comparing dev cloud IDE with figma - “https://thenewstack.io/the-race-to-be-figma-for-devs-codesandbox-vs-stackblitz/“

Your post helped me figure out why the Fediverse server focus for interaction has always bothered me. If it’s Software-as-a-Service, why does the user care about the server instance?

Onboarding a new user:

  1. Take me through the community selection decision criteria.
  2. Then give me the URL address.

The answer to 1. is NOT “choose a piece of infrastructure from a list of 10,000s”, because cognitive overload default choice is a powerful & beneficial position.

Ethics = power dynamics trade-offs.

No trade-offs usually means no ethics which usually shows up as all power concentrated at the top of a hierarchical structure with coercive, corrosive, dictatorial and authoritarian behavior.

Thinking about sustainability, cloud, carbon footprint and design artifacts.

Generally, I’m able to reduce the size of hi-res video (2.5 GB to 250 MB) or PDF (700 MB to 70MB) by 90%, with little or no noticeable degradation when viewing the artifact on a laptop screen.
Let’s do our bit to deliberately reduce cloud and disk storage where we can for optimal use of storage, transfers and ultimately power.

(Edit for typo and grammer.)

I want a Fediverse posting interface & interactions with a threaded forum for conversations. Been inspired to think about and to design a prototype after seeing the announcements for Wordpress.

It’s been like an annoying out of focus image at the back of my mind and I’m going to try drag it into focus.

“Machine learning (ML)” should be called “machine mimicking training data (M²TD)”.
The bias we complain about is always in the source, training data curated from biased humans. Data is representational, not neutral.

One thing I enjoy & look forward to on Saturday Morning with coffee, is catching up on favorite Fediverse lawyers @Teri_Kanefield and @design_law.

  1. Check out Teri’s breakdown or bust-out of the latest P45’s motion - https://law-and-politics.online/
Side note: BTW in UK, P45 is the tax form an employer gives when you leave & no longer employed by the company.

  2. Check out Sarah’s account for mind bending design patents. Some of which I’d personally be too embarrassed to submit.

In 2023, flights cancelled overnight for 100s of people, who are now stranded in Frankfurt Airport but no hotel or food vouchers provided.

Spend your own money but you can only stay as 3-star hotel or lower. Spend your money on something you did not budget for or plan, collect receipts and submit to customer services.

Then they wonder why people take their custom elsewhere.

I take pictures of clouds from airplane windows. iPhone memories classified them as snow and used them to make me a “Snowy days” memory album. I suppose clouds sorta look like snow, out of context.

Giving me a perfect example of this adage from 1891, applied to current AI “maths math” technology - “There three kinds of falsehood: the first is a 'fib,' the second is a downright lie, and the third and most aggravated is statistics.”
