Where do experience designers on Mastodon hang out. My current convos are skewed for technical, legal, AI topics.

Please mention and share generously. Thanks.

"Software alchemist" is not a job title, more descriptive/expressive of what I "seem" to be able to do , with creating digital experiences using software as my "material or medium (edit)" and a play on words -
Alchemist: a person who transforms or creates something through a "seemingly magical process".

Head twist: How do server implementations like Mastodon not understand that account transfer means the whole digital content related to an account, not just selected pieces.

Analogy: This is operating like old school bank accounts where followers are direct debits and who you follow are standing orders. Your content (transactions) don’t move to your new bank but you have statements (export of data).

It’s digital and data plus 2023. We can do so much better. Wander pondering.

Social media technology has 2 basic functions:

  1. Create public, communal digital space. This is the technical challenge.

  2. Enable people in that space to contribute & share content that is acceptable within numerous conflicting constraints. This is the soci(al/etal) challenge.

How does group of strangers from different countries, legal systems & cultures - select existing societal frameworks to apply for:

  • legal compliance ?
  • cultural compliance?
  • moral compliance?
    This is moderation.

One of the consequences of the current AI tech is who it empowers and enriches.

  1. It pillages digital content without consent & compensation.
  2. Requires $100,000s & days or weeks to train it on pillaged data to “get it to work”.
  3. It generates BS misinformation.
  4. It does all this faster than any human expert could edit and correct.

This is digital colonialism. I’m waiting for the corporate “Berlin Conference” notes to show up - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Conference

Science tries to provide a rational, deterministic statement to explain why+how “a thing”™️ happens.

That does not mean “a thing”™️ did not exist before the “science”, it was only not explained or understood. There would have been stories, oral histories, myths & superstitions radiating round “a thing”™️.

Sometimes “a thing”™️ doesn’t have only 1 rational, deterministic statement to explain it as its effect is contextual & conditional. Science needs to go beyond the singular, linear explanation.

I keep seeing people state they switched their browser from “implementation A” to “implementation B” - not naming names as that’s not required..

I use, on the daily:

  1. Firefox for developers, Firefox nightly and Firefox.
  2. Safari - MacOS 12,14 and IOS 11,15,17
  3. Chrome/Edge/Vivaldi, etc.

Curious question: What’s the reason for only limiting use to one specific browser implementation?

When someone says, “make it easy to do …”, what they mean is, “make it match/align with my current mental model/perspective/expectation” I.e. their “map”, regardless of the existing, actual territory.

Bias is “misapplication” of individual & collective socio-cultural maps & refusing to update them.

The worst map, often used in key decision making is the “assumption” - A statement (map) taken as true (territory), without proof. Think about that, “map” accepted as “territory”, without proof!

My serendipitous timeline:

  1. Journalists say, “AI system that is ‘imprinted’ on text generated by fallible, biased human beings, does not discriminate because of ‘data sourced from fallible, biased human beings.”
2 Economist uses excels “autofill” function to “generate” data for a published paper and saw no issue doing that!

Carl Sagan prescient words, “We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science & technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science & technology.”

Ethics = power dynamics trade-offs.

No trade-offs usually means no ethics which usually shows up as all power concentrated at the top of a hierarchical structure with coercive, corrosive, dictatorial and authoritarian behavior.

One of my biggest concerns about the AI/ML hype-waggoning is climate change.

Something that I find missing in almost every software company is this thing that I'm not sure I've seen explicitly called out anywhere, but I'm going to call it an Engineering Language.

@hazelweakly

Like your Description of “human-centered engineering(HCE)”. Anything “human-centered” must have a contextual, multidimensional communication system that carries & shares information about intention-, affect(emotion)-, effect(impact)-, problem framing-, solution choice-, reference blueprints-decision making+trade-offs+opportunity costs.

A factory=all these rigidly pre-decided for 1 specific combination to produce a specific output.
Engineering=creative, decision making endeavour.

I swear, so much complexity of my life right now comes from me wanting to be able to graphically draw out an interconnected hypergraph but also have a convenient textual representation of said hypergraph

I'm sure this makes zero sense to people. But ugh. It's so frustrating to have the ideas in your brain and just not be able to really tease them out in a useful way for others

Signed,

Welcome to the world of designer, visual asse(r)ts of Information Architecture (IA).

Hypergraph (capture and sense model) for audience of 1 perspective - you, needs to be translated and “transpired” into conceptual models for audience of many and different perspectives.

LLM-generated bug bounty manipulation, yet another demonstration of the fact that the space of "good" uses of LLMs for programming is very small compared to the vast ocean of adversarial uses. The tab is being called on all the technical debt we've accumulated in our systems of trust, and the high cost of "openness" without trust gets clearer every day.

@jonny

I love the metaphor - LLMs are “seismic quakes” across societal “trust fault lines“.

We built “openness” mansions on trust “tectonic plates” and surprised that they are crumbling under the pressure of the use of LLMs.

LLMs on their own are a technology. It’s people who make them and use them.

Knowledge has min. 3 main aspects - know how, know what & know why
Most “education (indoctrination)” material is

  1. Know how to do … - overindexed to point of zealous, cult-like imitation behavior.
  2. Know what … is - again instead of multiple perspectives only western, eurocentric version is “legit”.

If asked why, the usual id-led rather than curiosity-led response is “How dare you question my authority/status/ego/…! Get out of my office, classroom, house”, etc.”

I asked a frontend friend what framework he would recommend if he was starting a new project today. He said , so I spent the afternoon walking through their online tutorial and playing around with .

I've got to say, as someone with fairly rudimentary JS skills, it was a great experience. It feels a lot closer to HTML/CSS and a lot simpler than a lot of the other JS frameworks.

dahukanna,

Sharing a perspective:

  1. For personal projects suggest trying a few on equivalent implementations, pick the one that suits your mental models & the challenge at hand-https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/Tools_and_testing/Client-side_JavaScript_frameworks.
Personally prefer VueJs as it supports native HTML, CSS & JavaScript as well as providing structure & APIs.

  2. In an Organisation there are other considerations e.g. imposed corporate or institutional standards & selected defaults, etc.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a Panacea.JS-😉

Decided to streamline the project scope by focusing on the theme of Imagination for Invention & Discovery

So examining limitations of imagination in conventional pedagogies for research, learning & teaching, as well as exploring alternative pedagogies that utilise interface affordances to enhance imagination for purpose of invention and discovery in education, research, and learning

Helps me to simply focus on factors that limit imagination in pedagogies for its role in invention and discovery

Milestones Digital Glossary — An interactive website with a list of definitions thematized according to overlaps between design and educational psychology. It should also feature interactive elements such as highlighting related concepts when a definition is clicked. Design Framework — Complete your own design philosophy and then revise conventional UX deliverables with your own methods and its diagrams with your own onto-episte, design principles/philosophy-derived methods and frameworks and make them into diagrams. Actually, this could be part of your milestone as well. Diagramming your onto-episte, philosophies, principles. Pattern Library — Epistemic Cognition Design Pattern library for learning, teaching, and research activities, specifically tailored for Open Education, Open Pedagogy, and Edtech. This library will play a crucial role in defining the ten themes for your book, which explores novel interactive visual abstractions in UI design within the context of educational psychology, open education, and interface design. Newsletter — 10 themes, 20 essays of invention, analysis taken from the above themes, do that via email newsletter substance and Twitter threads.

I’d recommend looking at this article - https://www.rethinkingpower.info/how-interpretive-labor-straddles-the-gap-between-rules-and-reality/

UI intended design & actual implementation is always limited by means of production as well as collective human imagination.

For example, a set of administration functions I designed in 2021 still have not been signed-off & passed to development due to business priorities & limited team capability. Having design system components & being able to produce production code reduces some friction.

I call this act of embracing discomfort, “cactus hugging”.
If you do this act in haste you will absolutely get multiple punctures. If you do this deliberately, you’ll get “feedback” scrapes from the cactus that you are in danger of being punctured. So you adjust your stance accordingly.

Same, same doing the “comfortable/know-how to do stuff” but it’s not relevant for the task at hand. So accept I’m going to “suck” & proceed accordingly, setting incremental goals for me e.g.

  • spend hour a week for continuous 6 week period practicing.
  • continue at own pace but keep going til the end.
  • learn/study/research a new topic each month & present publicly at meetup, conference, somewhere.

Iteration cycle: learn+share+explain+feedback
