“All female shark tank” is my new band name.

Partially. The summary isn’t quite in line with the detail:

Android is the only operating system that fully immunizes VPN apps from the attack because it doesn’t implement option 121. For all other OSes, there are no complete fixes. When apps run on Linux there’s a setting that minimizes the effects, but even then TunnelVision can be used to exploit a side channel that can be used to de-anonymize destination traffic and perform targeted denial-of-service attacks.

Just archive it and take up farming.

Let me say… I work in healthcare. I clean human waste. I’m not easily grossed out.

Come on Jo, we’ve talked about this. You’re supposed to call them patients.

4-5 TOTP apps? So far, when, e.g. Microsoft or Google have insisted use of their own Authenticator app is required, it’s worked fine for me using Ente Auth or similar just by entering the code / QR.

I can still hear the penny dropping in my mind when I went from ‘How can anyone fall for that—it’s so obviously a scam…’ to ‘Oh, right…’ It sounded too Machiavellian to be true. I wonder if it was so carefully designed from the start, or a process of natural selection?

Ok, maybe this is just me still being a bit confused by federation. As the link opened the post, I’d assumed it was a crosspost link. Following it now, I see a different, single post. Viewing the sidebar, it suggests there should be 5 posts, and when I originally went there, it said 4. Given that I now see a single new post, those numbers add up—there are 3 missing somewhere.

But you’re right, it is a new community and so maybe it will just work out eventually.

@dave@feddit.uk avatar

Incidentally, I’ve turned off Hide Read for both feed and community, but I now see no posts in that community. Is there also a profile setting that affects this?

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

Ok, never mind. I found ‘Show read posts’ via the web interface :).

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

Fab—that’s much easier. Maybe the Arctic settings for Hide Read could check and pop up a warning if they don’t ‘match’? Or even just change it for convenience?

The thing with football is that there is a specific goal (pun very much intended). It’s ok to have a mindset that you’re going to play in a way that makes it unlikely (in the beginning) you’ll achieve that goal (eg play left footed), but if that player never improved, would you still think it’s ‘working’)?

I worked in an industry for many years that was obsessed with goal-setting, and that mindset never appealed to me. I eventually found a book called Goal Free Living by Stephen M. Shapiro. It was a bit of an eye-opener for me, and the phrase “Carry a compass not a map” stayed with me until today. I’ve done several different things since then but I’ll never be famous for any of them as I still keep changing direction.

You can also instantly fix it by not going on Reddit. Just saying—it might be good for you blood pressure :)

Thanks—all makes sense. A retry button sounds like a great solution. And maybe also if the post is opened and the media actually loaded, it could update the image preview store too?

On a maybe related note, I had to turn YouTube previews off as they simply weren’t working at all. Is that a known problem?

Q2: Which is more efficient? Code blocks do 2 different things so cannot compare. What gives?

No inconvenience—I like these kinds of things but then another question had a typo in it (varx instead of var x) and one of the options was ‘Error’ but again that was incorrect. It’s probably worth running these snippets just to make sure :)

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

True, but in this case it was. And I usually get two of them—one to my main account and one to my ‘recovery’ account and one of them ends up in spam.

From the google ‘Meh, it kinda works’ School of Design.

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, it’s to my recovery account. But DKIM is set up on that account and fetched via google. Probably some kind of weird back emf somewhere.

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

Yes—this is what I see. But I don’t work in this area, so still not sure if it’s google or my domain that’s borked, and quite frankly… All I used to test my domain was MXToolbox, and that reported everything configured correctly.

Enhancement: Option to turn off background refresh

This is an assumption on my part, and may have other explanations. I’ve noticed sometimes the feed ‘jumps’ down a post while scrolling, and I’m assuming this is due to a background feed update combined with a sort order that puts a new item anove where I was currently scrolled to. If that’s the case, having an option...

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

I think I saw a note in the last change log about this—apologies if I mis-remembered. Just wanted to say I think it’s still happening, and I just saw what I think is the clearest example.

I’d scrolled to a point where the top few pixels, perhaps the top line of text, was visible on a post at the bottom of the screen. That post contained a link, and as I was looking at the post above the whole feed jumped ‘up’ and the barely visible bottom post was in the view. I guess this fits with what you’d said about that post changing size when its content became available after previous the link.

Hopefully you can find a way for the top of that post on screen to be anchored so the feed moves ‘down’ instead of ‘up’… :)

dave,
@dave@feddit.uk avatar

And I don’t know if it’s useful but I often find the ‘jumping’ is pretty transient—it will happen once but then scrolling up and down over that section is smooth.

However I just found this post whose comments are full of images, and this one jumps pretty consistently for me—thought it may help as a test case if you didn’t already have one :)
