I started a new project today. I wanted to see if I could figure out how to draw an old school arcade racer road, which bends left and right...

I figured out the basics pretty quickly, but got a bit hung up on scaling the stripes at distance. It's almost there, but there's a discontinuity in my scaling function that causes a flicker. Need to bottom that one out.

God... Chrissie Hynde wears leather pants and you're all for it... but when Henry off Neighbours tries the same, you're all outraged!

Hypocrits

I finished up my Pico-8 port of The Pit today and pushed it out.

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=55339

Got everything I wanted in there, but really had to sweat the tokens by the end... any non-serious bugs will have to just exist, and any major tweaks to gameplay are but pie in the sky!

I think it faithfully reproduces the original, albeit in a reduced form. By which I mean: if you think it's janky, that's just lovingly recreated early-80s jank you're seeing!

Man, I love that single-minded focus you get when you start a project you're interested in, where you just lose whole days to it... Anyone who is relying on me to accomplish other stuff may not agree though...

I made more progress on The Pit Jnr today. The rocks now fall, diamonds are collectable, added an effect to digging... and made it possible to die!

It's an ungodly mess of code that needs throwing in the bin, but it kind of mostly works.

I am a developer (one who specialises in impostor syndrome) but I am not a game developer.

That said, I do sometimes get a mad urge to port the 1982 arcade game "The Pit" to platforms that don't yet have it.

Like this week, where I suddenly decided I wanted to get into Pico-8 dev for that very purpose.

One day later and it's taking shape!

Chancellor is going to cut NI, saving me a couple of hundred quid a year.... I can't get a call with a GP in anything under four weeks, but I'll be two hundred quid a year better off. Go Tories!

Tell you what... keep the 200 quid. Fix the NHS. And for pity's sake, be honest with us about the correlation between the tax we pay and the level of public service we enjoy!

The Tory ideology is that tax is a punishment. It's not. It's the price you pay to live in a functioning society!

Well, it's not quite the Mickey Mouse and four french maids fantasy that I always dreamed of... but what you gonna do?

Every time Jon Bon Jovi comes on, I feel compelled to tell my story of how I saw him front a bad covers band at a ... SharePoint conference.

No matter how low he is here, he stilll has further to fall.

Calm down everyone, they're not presenting... they're just bookends. Like this whole episode is the meat in a Robson and Jerome sandwich...

Was wondering why Take My Breath Away was in the charts in 1990... turns out it was rereleased to coincide with the first TV showing of Top Gun on ITV...

davetansley, to Cinema

We went to see The Lost Boys at our local small cinema last night.

Honestly, I think this might be a very rare example of a "perfect" movie. It is perfectly paced, with not an ounce of fat on it; it's the perfect length; it looks amazing; it has a wonderful soundtrack, a satisfying conclusion and is endlessly quotable.

It's hard to find fault with it.

Film number three in the was Life Force from 1985.

A British sci-fi horror film about a space shuttle expedition that discovers an alien ship full of space vampires, then lets them loose on London.

Surprisingly good, if a little long. Very British, it even had Patrick Stewart in it, but always fairly interesting.

There was enough gratuitous nudity that I expect it was a formative experience for many teenage boys!

Nearly time for this year's , an act of cinematic self-harm where @teahands and I randomly select terrible 80s horror movies from a smorgasbord of mediocrity, then subject ourselves to them for 12 hours or so.

This year's selection is especially stinky. We've been doing this so many years that anything half-decent has been long since watched, and anything left is, well, "Dark Night of the Scarecrow".

Wish us luck, we'll need it. 🎃

Busting through this year's spooky game... : Dawn of Sorrow on the Nintendo DS (played on a Pocket 2S).

It's a great sequel to Aria of Sorrow, and can thankfully be played single screen. The touch screen stuff feels a bit gimmicky, but works okay.

Best of all is that cozy feeling of gradually exploring a massive castle, figuring out how to get places, getting new powers.

I think games might by my gaming comfort food.

    davetansley,

@teahands Stop wiggling over there! Wiggling is now banned in this house!

Don't panic everyone... there's a 1987 coming up later. Maybe some Pepsi and Shirley will sort us all out.

If we watch enough of these, we'll be able to identify the exact moment it becomes "Depesh Mode". And I think that'll be culturally important.

Depeche Mode is like David Bowie and Shrewsbury. Nobody can agree on the correct pronunciation.

    davetansley,

    @losttourist @girlabtvillage @seb321 It's actually "mo-day".
