I will be in Germany in the week of September 23 and have some time for potential client work in Ulm, Kassel, or somewhere in between.

If you're interested in workshops around Refactoring Strategies/Code Quality in Rust or a TypeScript Type System Deep Dive, send me a message!

Reading this blog post from @dries (creator of Drupal) about the post-pivot definition of Jamstack.

https://dri.es/the-new-old-jamstack-and-mach-journey-towards-traditional-cms-concepts

Dries rightly notes that Jamstack 2.0 shares more in common with monolithic/traditional stacks.

For me—I read this as a huge indictment of the broadened definition—it’s not a healthy evolution of the term if we must sacrifice technical clarity and simplicity to do so.

@zachleat @dries My problem with both the terms MACH and Jamstack is that they don't describe architectures but marketing vehicles for early/mid-stage startups. Especially MACH can be very adamant about this: Don't run your own service but pour money into SaaS subscriptions.

@eaton @tanepiper @zachleat @dries 😂
But then again, what isn't?
What would make a CMS "complete" in your opinion?

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@tanepiper @zachleat @dries I totally forgot that MACH pushes GraphQL so hard everywhere. When you look at the members of the MACH alliance and see tons of GraphQL startups you realise why.
GraphQL is mostly a red flag for me. I haven't seen a single customer who didn't have problems either scaling that stuff or designing it. And FWIW I still think GraphQL Is a Conway symptom that Facebook just didn't want to solve differently.

@eaton @tanepiper @zachleat @dries Agree! I have seen situations where the content team used a CMS to structure/organize their content independently of what design or development wanted to create in the end. Often even months in advance. The CMS was strong enough to put everything into hierarchy, and flexible enough for all outputs.

I tried https://github.com/berthubert/googerteller and after 10 minutes or so I found out that the site talking the least to Google was Gmail.

Another audit, another website that uses divs instead of buttons. I. don't. get. it.

@matuzo You should be more grateful, Manuel, every div means job security

Let's say I have dev tooling I publish with the Apache 2.0 license, is it possible to have that dev tooling software depend on something proprietary?

@janl Wonderful, thank you! 🙌

This is a dark pattern, isn't it?

This is the Tailwind CSS website. I click on "Components" to land on a very similar site, almost identical (maybe framework limits), but which is their paid service.

There's no indication on the first page that this leads to something commercial, or even to a different page.

The Tailwind UI Website. Same design, but a slightly different logo. This is their paid service.

I finished Super Mario World! 🎉

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@srecnig Yes. And all 96 exits 😎

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@srecnig (and all Dragon Coins)

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@srecnig Nah, Virtual Console/emulation, unfortunately. Was also the reason why I struggled with the controls at first because my Gamepad was pretty mediocre.

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@srecnig Do you play SoM via emulation? I switched to a Miyoo Mini after sucking at Virtual Console... finished SML1+2, SMB1-3, and SMW since I got it :D Going through all my childhood games again. Now I'm playing Chrono Trigger again, looking at my own walkthrough that I've written 24 years ago.

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@srecnig Cool! That made the Analogue just more interesting! The hardware looks excellent and my brother is a huge fan of the Super Nt, I might give it another look.
I'm in love with the Miyoo Mini. I haven't done a lot of Playstation games yet, but the Nintendo consoles and the Mega Drive work so well. And I'm a sucker for save states :D
Funniest thing is that my friends got them too and now we play Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald together so we can share rare Pokemon 😂

When doing book reviews for O'Reilly, one option is to be paid in books! Here is part of my haul -

My goodness that CSS book is chonky, @estelle and @Meyerweb ! I knew it'd be big, hahahah, but at 1100 pages it truly has biblical proportions!

@deadparrot @addyosmani

The CSS book seen obliquely from the side showing how deep it is (just under 6cm or 2.5 inches).
One of my children reading about CSS (face obscured by huge book).

I finally get the hang of Super Mario World... Cape Mario plays really differently as opposed to Racoon Mario in SMB3, but the cape also allows for some nice tricks that make some tense situations a lot of fun.

I get that the designers wanted to make the game accessible for casual gamers and challenging for professionals. I find joy in finding secret exits and playing around with the world map. This feeling is pretty unique to this title.

I finished Super Mario Land 1 + 2 and Super Mario Brothers 1-3 (All Stars on SNES) decades ago and recently again. I just started Super Mario World for the first time in my life (yes, I know), and I find the controls irritatingly hard to master. Especially with the Feather power-up and Yoshi. I constantly jump off of Yoshi and send him into the depths of the netherworld. I wonder if this gets better, but right now it's very frustrating, especially compared to how well SMB3 plays on the SNES.

@thomasfuchs Emulator (SNES classic mini doesn’t count as real hardware, does it?)

But I get you, I know from my old NES that the real HW with a CRT really makes a difference, especially with games like Mario or Megaman
