What a week in AI!

  • Microsoft releases its biggest invasion of your privacy in decades!
  • Sam Altman violates Scarlett Johansson to get her likeness for his digital parrot!
  • Google UX legend Scott Jenson declares idea bankruptcy at Google and panic driven AI development because they want to lock you in faster than their competitors!

This shit is going great!

Friends, the TypeScript cookbook is out!
I'm so happy we reached this milestone. A couple of days ago O'Reilly wrapped up production. The book is off to the printer and you can get it digitally already.

I didn't know that I had "another" TypeScript book in me, but this one basically wrote itself. And it's my most honest view on the topic. Can't wait to hold it in my hands ❤️

Meanwhile, I try to fumble together a website: https://typescript-cookbook.com/

Vercel joking about Scarlett Johansson at their keynote is enormously tone-deaf.

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@JoshuaKGoldberg It started with the MC introducing herself as Sky because they couldn't get Scarlett Johansson, and their AI VP constantly pushing Scarlett into his product demos.

Maybe I'm too sensitive about this but I don't joke when a person has been forcefully robbed of her traits and identity

Reading this blog post from @dries (creator of Drupal) about the post-pivot definition of Jamstack.

https://dri.es/the-new-old-jamstack-and-mach-journey-towards-traditional-cms-concepts

Dries rightly notes that Jamstack 2.0 shares more in common with monolithic/traditional stacks.

For me—I read this as a huge indictment of the broadened definition—it’s not a healthy evolution of the term if we must sacrifice technical clarity and simplicity to do so.

deadparrot,
@deadparrot@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat @dries My problem with both the terms MACH and Jamstack is that they don't describe architectures but marketing vehicles for early/mid-stage startups. Especially MACH can be very adamant about this: Don't run your own service but pour money into SaaS subscriptions.

I finished Super Mario Land 1 + 2 and Super Mario Brothers 1-3 (All Stars on SNES) decades ago and recently again. I just started Super Mario World for the first time in my life (yes, I know), and I find the controls irritatingly hard to master. Especially with the Feather power-up and Yoshi. I constantly jump off of Yoshi and send him into the depths of the netherworld. I wonder if this gets better, but right now it's very frustrating, especially compared to how well SMB3 plays on the SNES.

@thomasfuchs Emulator (SNES classic mini doesn’t count as real hardware, does it?)

But I get you, I know from my old NES that the real HW with a CRT really makes a difference, especially with games like Mario or Megaman

“Bun hype, how we learned nothing from Yarn” by Jared Wilcurt via @brianleroux

https://dev.to/thejaredwilcurt/bun-hype-how-we-learned-nothing-from-yarn-2n3j

I don’t agree with everything in this article and it’s very snarky, but there are also a few good points in it. I don’t mind Bun integrating all the tooling like e.g. a bundler, a test-runner or TypeScript. I think that’s good actually. But pushing Bun on the ecosystem with a so-so Node compatibility makes me uncomfortable.

Also, it works on mobile and is fully keyboard accessible, so what's your excuse?

I will be in Germany in the week of September 23 and have some time for potential client work in Ulm, Kassel, or somewhere in between.

If you're interested in workshops around Refactoring Strategies/Code Quality in Rust or a TypeScript Type System Deep Dive, send me a message!

A really good thing about static site generators is that you can easily move from host to host.

Refactored the website to use templates yesterday. I used Nunjucks for templating and Gulp to build, since that is what was good last time. Are they still good choices? Or has the world moved on?

@nrc If you ignore all the hype- and VC-driven JavaScript frameworks, be sure to try https://www.11ty.dev/ by @zachleat -- It's a static site generator that is easy to start with and capable of doing so much more. I'm using it for fettblog.eu for 4 years now and it has everything that I need. And you still can use Nunjucks!

@srecnig Cool! That made the Analogue just more interesting! The hardware looks excellent and my brother is a huge fan of the Super Nt, I might give it another look.
I'm in love with the Miyoo Mini. I haven't done a lot of Playstation games yet, but the Nintendo consoles and the Mega Drive work so well. And I'm a sucker for save states :D
Funniest thing is that my friends got them too and now we play Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald together so we can share rare Pokemon 😂
