We’d have to stop demanding the money for it to become worthless. Again, no contract would be broken, because not wanting something does not require a multi party agreement. Anyone can unilaterally decide not to want something.

The socialist rise has been also asociated with stagnation, hunger, neighbors turning neighbors to the secret police, and at least 20 year wide gap in the mindsets of people compared to their western peers. It’s inherently violent, authoritarian ideology. It’s rising popularity in the developed world is similar tragedy as a rise of fascism. Another violent authoritarian ideology.

I’ve managed to completely ignore sony as a company since they’ve sued geohot, up to the release of Horizon: Forbidden west. My body is ready.

Can’t wait for my friends and family to fall into the meatgrinder of ideologicaly fueled civil war. Or even die of old age, because some regressivists lobby for a ban on medical research again.

The only difference between gear and quest, is that the phone cannot be taken out of the quest, plus it has more sensors.

Works perfectly with Mi Band 3. The UI is little rough, but you rarely have to use it after the initial configuration. Everything just works.

iOS 17 Could Break Crucial Diabetic Glucose Monitor Alerts, Manufacturer Warns (www.404media.co)

Owners of the FreeStyle Libre 3, one of Abbott Laboratories’ flagship glucose monitors, received an email this week warning them to “disable automatic system updates on your iPhone” because the new operating system’s StandBy Mode and Assistive Access Mode “may impact your ability to receive time-sensitive notifications...

I’d expect the phone manufacturers to create stable APIs for these use cases, instead of sabotaging the developes. I’m not even a diabetic, but the way android is fighting against the background processes makes the phone less and less usable with every update.

horizontally-organized social media system

Even the fediverse feels like a bunch of hierarchies. Some have a council with code of conduct on top, some have a benevolent dictator. As a user, you have very little say in the relationships between the large instances. It’s easier to become a sovereign instance at the moment, compared to the dark times of twitter and reddit, but as soon as the large instances decide not to federate with the world by default, you’re back to square one. It’s very similar to citizen vs country, and country vs country interaction.

half-century old, horizontally-organized global computer network

I’d say that only Tier 1 networks are horizontally managed. The name itself implies a hierarchy. There is an organization on top granting AS’s to legal entities, and assigning IP addresses to them. An average ISP customer has absolutely no say about what happens higher up in the hierarchy.

Sure, you can try to bootstrap a flat network, but that has it’s own disadvantages. And I’m saying that as a member of a project trying to build a meshnet using network protocols with more or less flat topology. (Disaster radio, Meshtastic, Reticulum).

The society won’t work without hierarchies. The important thing is to not forcefully involve other people in your hierarchy.

Nobody wants to organize horizontally.

If you haven't heard of it - Nostr is a decentralized twitter alt - but uses relays as soft servers (www.youtube.com)

Hey folks. Just wanted to put out a good word about Nostr. I’m finding it to be pleasantly easy to use and very akin to twitter but uses soft servers in the form of relays. Its not quite moving away from servers but where decentralization is happening frequently, its nice to give that liberty back to users....

deafboy,
@deafboy@lemmy.world avatar

While you can’t force people not to see things they WANT to see, it would be possible for a certain relay to moderate the content it deliveres to its clients. I feel like it will become a huge feature pretty soon, since the global feed is a hot garbage already.

How much worse can it get, if somebody does it with a clear purpose, compared to what we do now - just venting bunch of random stuff out to the atmosphere, hoping it’ll be okay-ish.

Each time a platform reaches enough popularity to attract an average voter, people starts to blame the platform for being stupid. I’m waiting for the day we collectively realize it’s not the platform we hate, it’s the average person.

Defederation is always malicious. Imagine your email getting silently lost, because gmail defederated from aol.

The network has started to implode sooner than I expected. This was an interesting week and a half…

They have a right to build a walled community, but lemmy is a strange choice to do it. By connecting to a network known not to handle such disruptions well, (the OP is proof that it doesn’t) and then disconnecting from it, seems like a small FU.

To be fair, it’s really hard to come up with the set of rules that can be objectively enforced. Even governments are failing to do so. When you come up with a rule set, some people will naturally take that as a challange. Banning individual users would still be more acceptable than banning the entire instances.
