Effective July 1, 2023, the rate for apps that require higher usage limits is $0.24 per 1K API calls (less than $1.00 per user / month for a typical Reddit third-party app).
Effectively forcing app devs to become middle-men collecting on reddit's behalf. Mob boss behavior. '
I guess it "looks better", to cut someone off at the knees before murdering them outright.
I'm not trying to convince anyone to go back i promise, quite the contrary actually cause I think spez plans to just decrease the cost of the API and act like it was a bargain deal sacrifice while not solving any of the issues at all...
Use the report button if you see any of that too, we will not tolerate it here.
Reddit thrives off of letting homophobes and transpbobes ruin everyone's day, because it drives up their engagement numbers. We aren't going to allow that here.
FB and twitter are losing users, but very slowly. Reddit will go out the same way... It'll be a whiny, decades-long, fading away into obscurity, while still retaining lots of assets.
About two days ago we found a bug with the registration system on lemmy. Because of this we have updated our registration process a few times, and cannot deny any applications as the person registering does not receive any message and cannot re-apply....
We can definitely use all the help we can get. Luckily since lemmy and its UI is open source, we can embed all this highly popular functionality directly into lemmy-ui.
I don't think I would change anything... Learning jetpack compose, and signal-based reactivity, has been teaching me how to be a better UI designer, and I've been applying its principles to the other apps I develop. Its very opinionated, for performance reasons, whereas a lot of front end frameworks like react can let you do things in 1000 different ways.
I'd been wanting someone else to build a native android app for lemmy for a while by then, but when it became clear no one else was going to, I scraped out time from other lemmy work for a month to build it.
Our current coding work should help, but ya it's not been an easy time for us server admins, when reddit fucks up so bad that half the site tries to join the fediverse.
If the reddit exodus happens and Lemmy gets even 2% of reddit's daily active users, how will Lemmy sustain the increased traffic? I know donations are an option, but I don't think long term donations will be sustainable. Most users will never donate....
For sure. I think all three of those ones we list are transparent, and really the main cost is just our labor time. Server / infrastructure / devops costs are minimal.
Liberapay is simpler, automatically splits payment between devs, and has no fees (other than the payment processor). They're even funded by their own model.
Opencollective isn't as good because you have to submit invoices to get paid.
Patreon is absolutely the worst because it's not made for teams, and they take a big cut for essentially just running a wordpress for you with payment buttons.
This is our 3rd year of grants from NLNet, and they're been more than generous with helping Lemmy get off the ground. I don't think we'll re-up for another year, as most of the bigger issues are done, and their resources should be spent getting other important but lesser-known projects off the ground.
First all the bs with Twitter and Elon, then Reddit having an exodus to Lemmy (not complaining lol), then Twitch. Are we like, in an alternate self healing dimension or something?
Seems very close to osmotic flow... at least that's what some ppl call it. Ya I've found that not drowning the coffee, and not pouring after the bubble get to the top, tastes much better.

Just wanted to share, if anyone is planning on attending the AMA...
TFW I spent 4 hours yesterday clearing all my notifications, and wake up to 90 more today. (lemmy.ml)
what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back

I went to Reddit today...
And saw a bunch of posts about the third party apps closing down, and lots of negativity about that whole fiasco....
Can you code? We need your help to improve lemmy

How is Lemmy going to make money?
If the reddit exodus happens and Lemmy gets even 2% of reddit's daily active users, how will Lemmy sustain the increased traffic? I know donations are an option, but I don't think long term donations will be sustainable. Most users will never donate....
Reddit CEO (/u/spez) is going to hold a AMA about the API update (www.reddit.com)
Seriously, what's up with big sites literally dying as we speak?

What's your preferred / favorite pour-over method?
I've been using the the osmotic flow / slow method, but I'm interested to see what other people like.
