On top of the usual "inches" and feet, do you know the following?

One hand = 4 inches
One hundredweight (US) = 100 pounds
One hundredweight (UK) = 112 pounds
One butt = 130 gallons of ale, or 151 gallons of wine.
One barleycorn is 1/3 in
A fluid scruple which is of course 1/480 of a pint, or, more appropriately 20 minims.
A gill on the other hand is 1/4 of a pint.

So, how many gills in a cubic barleycorn?

It's a misunderstanding that the first meeting between a member of the Q continuum and humanity happened at Fairpoint.

The first meddling with humanity was a time loop and has been documented in the movie "Groundhog day".

A lost pafe of the movie script references Q with the scribbled note "who is Q and what does he have to do in the movie?"

Well... I don't really live in a city and the power does go out sometimes for a few hours, sometimes for a few days :) when it goes out, we have solar, batteries and a small generator for the fridges if needed.
We grow our vegetables, have chooks for eggs (not meat) and bees for honey
.
Were using rain water most of the time, except when prolonged drought. Town water is not drinkable either.

I am not saying we could live off grid for a year yet, but a few weeks should be OK :)

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@thor
It's not super easy either, we have droughts and floods, heatwave and cold nights. No hospital in town and no food delivery available.
It's a choice of life that most of my friends and colleagues do not understand: why leave the advantages and comfort of the city to go live in a small town?

Getting a house far from the cities is not that expensive, but few people want to leave the comfort of the city behind...

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@thor
We drive once or twice a month. It's around 80km away so unlikely to walk or cycle there.

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@thor
It's a life saver, without it we couldn't get to hospital or anything like that, yes.

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@thor
Oh we are not, I don't think anybody can ever be, even my neighbours who live completely off grid. We still need help from the community in the town and the larger country. We need school and chocolate factories.
Keep in mind my goal is not to become a hermit and renounce society. It's by necessity, where we live we have to be able to rely on ourselves and our community.

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@thor
The thread was about virtual windows, right?
I like technology, it's my passion, my job, and I love it when it can help people.
I don't really have a need for it, but I think it could help people that live in cities to fight things like depression or to help relax.
About living off grid, though, I was wondering, do you live in a city?

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@feld
Agreed on this. I am wondering if the big change from let's say 30 years ago is the diversity. When I was a kid, we had no internet, six chanels on TV (including one in German and one in Italian) and 2-3 newspapers in the country.
You could say "did you watch this yesterday on TV" and the answer was very likely yes.
Now, everyone reads a slightly or grossly different info from a gazillion of sources, all or them reflecting a part of the truth and some wrongs. It changed society

dimi,
@dimi@techforgood.social avatar

@thor
If you can do it, getting in a country town for a month or two and seeing if this would agree with you more might be a thing to do... 40 is not the end of the wild and change might still be an option.

They...cured lupus??? https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-03968-6 I mean. It's a hella intense, sci-fi treatment, and we're talking only a dozen or two patients, but they have actually knocked down four different autoimmune diseases here and it...works??

Oh no! This will prevent any reboots of House MD! :)

Seriously though, this is incredibly promising.
