Hi! I’m the same thatandromeda you may know from elsewhere online. Studied #math, taught #Latin to middle school boys, trained as a #librarian, ended up writing #software for a variety of libraries and adjacent organizations. Things I’ve obsessed over include nonprofit governance, #weightlifting, #knitting, #singing, my cats, and #planes (working slowly on my pilot’s license). Married, mom to a teenager, extremely online for a long time. #introduction

Some of my friends that are convicted felons are 100% innocent of what they were accused and convicted of. Some of my friends that are convicted felons are guilty, and absolutely did what they were accused of. I don't make fun of people for being convicted felons, and I don't ostracize them. Instead, I don't let bad people around me. My definition of bad focuses on the choices that a person made in the past, and the choices that they make now. Some of the worst people, will never be felons.

@juergen_hubert @mekkaokereke It is extra fun when people COUNT incarcerated people for the purposes of determining population/representation, but then they don’t get to vote in those elections. If you were to guess that prisons are disproportionately located in places with voters hostile to the interests of, and from different demographics than, incarcerated people, yeah I’m pretty sure you’d be right

You can now buy a flame-throwing robot dog for under $10,000

Thermonator, the first "flamethrower-wielding robot dog," is completely legal in 48 US states.

I want to do a content analysis of hype followers in the LIS literature. I need to pick phenomena where the bubble has burst and it's clear there was never any there there.

From the world outside libraries, I've got Second Life, MOOCs, and NFTs. Anybody got ideas for phenomena internal to libraries?

(Not hype-y enough or too substantive: IRs, FRBR, linked data, DH, third places. I'm talking TOTALLY bankrupt here.)

@dsalo (i don't have any purely internal but: blooooockchaaaaaain)

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@dsalo also tbqh I'm interested in the opposite case of QR codes, where there was so much assumption at the time that there was no there there (to be fair they have an inexplicable miasma of embarrassment), but it turns out they're actually totally useful. I wonder if there's anything to be learned from the juxtaposition.

Our model shows that we can intervene on code review anxiety by targeting the cost bias (when we overestimate the "cost" of a negative outcome) and anxiety self-efficacy (our belief in our ability to tolerate and manage anxiety), with anxiety self-efficacy being the strongest contributor to code review anxiety."

@tim_abell @goleztrol @CSLee @seresearchers i have 10+ years of dev experience and pairing sounds like hell on earth to me, actually. I know some people love it and get a lot of value of it out but shudder

@tim_abell @goleztrol @CSLee @seresearchers It is great that you thrive on it! I have declined to interview at a company that was very pair-programming-oriented. I respect that it can produce better output for many teams but for me personally I would shut down and produce essentially nothing at all.

The thing about Facebook is that the people who work there just do this shit. They make a plan to do it, they agree to do it and they do it. Sometimes they say "this is very bad there's no way we can justify this" and then they do it anyway.

Being from where I am in the world, my words for ingredients are in Malay, Teochew, Hokkien, Tamil (there’s no order to which food items are in which language. They simply.. are. Some fish we use the Malay names, some fish we use the other names. Same with veggies)

And now that I am in N America I am re-learning some words in Cantonese

I thought I couldn’t get ‘kang kung’ here but learned it’s actually called ‘ong choy’

This is a fish table at a fishmonger in Singapore

My other thoughts on car dependence:

I didn’t feel constrained by not having a car or driving license, growing up somewhere with excellent transit, because that was freeing. No one had to pick me up from school. No one had to send me to school. As a kid I could explore malls and food with friends after school. Some days I even took the bus to another country (Malaysia) for lunch before returning. I could work any job, stay super late, go anywhere, almost any time.

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@skinnylatte one of the things I really like about living somewhere with good-for-America transit is my kid has gotten to have freedom of the city, starting pretty young. Not bus to another country (WOW) but at least independence.

Hi y'all! I would love it if you could chip in to help out my favorite archival collection, the small-but-scrappy WV Feminist Activist Collection, preserving progressive history in a red state in the aftermath of a widely-publicized university financial bloodbath. https://dayofgiving.wvu.edu/giving-day/82562/department/88189 ; search for fund name WV Feminist Activist Collection, or enter fund number #2W1553.

It's my favorite collection because they accessioned my mom's papers. 1/

More followup, more work I've been influenced by. This is from 2020 but it's the funniest headline I've ever seen*

https://www.brookings.edu/articles/math-intensive-fields-have-a-gender-problem-the-men-are-worse-at-math/

*for a very serious finding about how biased evaluation actually MASKS us from accessing achievement that might look the opposite to what we (stereotypically) expect. Aka, we need good math work done, and high achieving women could fill that demand, but our biases are directly sabotaging us from seeing the achievement of women in math skills.

Me: When I try to master a programming language, it's important for me to understand what constitutes elegance in that language.

JavaScript: "Spread syntax looks exactly like rest syntax. In a way, spread syntax is the opposite of rest syntax." https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Operators/Spread_syntax

goddammit

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

I mean look on the one hand I find a lot of ragging on JS is deeply distasteful because it has these huge olds-vs-youngs, backend-vs-frontend, & misogyny elements

but on the other hand wow I have been trying for YEARS to figure out what idiomatic, aesthetically pleasing JS looks like to its community and no one can tell me

thatandromeda,
@thatandromeda@ohai.social avatar

@gvwilson I am definitely getting this vibe! People seem in general to have a primary allegiance to Vue, or React, etc., not to JavaScript, so I should probably be just looking for Vue aesthetics. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. It's probably still murky to me!

Yesterday, Xavier Worthy ran a 40 in 4.21 seconds, setting a new NFL combine record. That is really fast!

Xavier:

But then NFL commentators said that he's faster than Usain Bolt, because Bolt ran a 4.22, and just... No.🤡

Usain Bolt ran the 40 in 4.22 in his late 30s, after he retired, without training, in sweatpants and street shoes!🤯

Bolt:

A top track athlete running a 40 properly, gets a time closer to 4.12
