I was thinking about this scene from a movie but I couldn't remember what movie so I was gonna post here and ask if anyone recognized it. But then as I was typing the post I remembered that it was "The Crow". So. Thanks for nothing I guess

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I can't count the number of times I've solved my own problem in the midst of formally phrasing what the problem is to another person so this seems like a cousin of that.

"As age, they are quickly turning to electronic waste destined for the scrap yard along with old laptops, tube monitors, and old cell phones. That is something the industry needs to be prepared for. I hope there is regulation that will require companies to support these products for a reasonable period of time."

@ned @seachanger I think ebikes are extremely cool and if I didn't live in an extremely flat city I probably would have convinced myself to upgrade. That said, I have seen it make cycling very accessible to a lot of people including my boomer-aged uncle.

Kleenex announced they're fully pulling out of Canadian stores and within a month the domestic competitor has new packaging that is totally covered in Canadian flags

Sudden layoffs have been announced at a company my friend's working at and they haven't sent out the emails that indicate if they're safe or being let go yet. Send some good vibes during this awful time.

Update: they were spared but still overall an awful day for them and their colleagues.

@robyn I'm pretty sure we're both on the same page about this, yeah 🙁

Note the little detached 'island' in the south as a reachable destination--representing the LRT station at Southgate.

Always a question when publishing a screenplay as a book: typeset with Courier, per the actual working drafts used in the industry, or with a proper text face like a novel? Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is set in Sabon (my favorite text typeface):

@gruber wait, are the action lines written in the first person?

Does anyone know what it means if I hit the audio mute button on my keyboard and the mac does not change the audio volume but instead just shows this huge icon?

I am using HDMI (and headphones plugged into my HDMI monitor) for audio

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc it means that it's currently connected to a line out device and expects volume to be handled at the amplifier component like the tv's volume control.

I see this when I have audio directed to my USB external 2.0 receiver.

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I personally appreciate it because I'd like to automatically minimize as many level controls in the chain as possible. but I can see why others dislike it.

I have decided to learn FPGAs. This is something I have decided on average once every four years since 2007, and it never goes anywhere, because I don't actually have any practical reason to learn FPGAs, so I wind up reading a HDL language manual, going "well! that sure is something!" and making nothing.

However! This time I have an Analogue Pocket coming (or they CLAIM they're shipping orders this month: https://twitter.com/analogue/status/1682430522989879307) So I'll have a thing connected to a screen I can run code on.

@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

Weird thought after reading about covid spikes measured in municipal wastewater streams: doesn’t that undercount covid incidence when up to 50% of people in rural states are on septic (not municipal, not analyzed) systems?

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mathowie tough to say. My impression is that wastewater can give you a relative trend up and down but it's difficult to derive a solid 'this means x people have covid' result from it regardless of if it includes rural samples. Even the different municipal wastewater systems have different diffusion rates.

You never know what you're gonna get from family interactions. I was chatting with my aunt and mentioned seeing Oppenheimer and she let me know my great uncle (grandma's brother) was on the USS Indianapolis that delivered the a-bombs to Japan that were loaded onto the Enola Gay, but a couple days later Japanese submarines torpedoed it and he died when it went down, which also made me think what would WWII's ending have been if they took down the ship with the bombs a few days earlier?

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mathowie Weird coincidence that I just rewatched JAWS recently.

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mathowie I recommend it! Great movie and the politics never felt more timely.

The USS Indianapolis monologue is one of the electrifying highlights of the film. I hope you check it out.

There is a mysterious business near me named "Egg Bae". They are some sort of fast-food-coded restaurant, I assume serving eggs. They've been where they are for years but I've yet to successfully eat there because every time I try something goes wrong, they're closed or something. One time we went in and they were out of eggs. How can Egg Bae be out of eggs? Eggs are the only thing I know about them

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc maybe it's their way of saying 'we don't stockpile stale eggs, we have a limited number of the freshest eggs every day'.

My local ramen place almost sounds like it's bragging when it closes early due to running out of broth.

For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:

@mcc Fun fact: I never watched Much Music or followed music videos but when I heard "Gabriel" I had a daydream about what a cool music video for it would be like.

A year or so later I saw the actual music video for "Gabriel" and it was actually beat for beat what was in my head. One of the freakiest coincidences in my entire life.

I love Apple's hardware, but what the heck is going on with the Apple TV? I've had to reboot multiple Apple TVs (latest model) multiple times just to get basic video playback going across several apps like Hulu and Netflix and HBO Max. You'll press play and it crashes back out to the main menu. Repeat. Repeat. Until you reboot..

distinct,
@distinct@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror @kevindente wonder if putting them on a surge protector and completely reimaging them would help.
