My unmitigated contempt for tech companies that do this has no bounds. It’s a “yes or no” question. If you lack the integrity to permit people to actually say “no” you’re failing as a company and as human beings. Sorry, but it’s true. Grow up.

Thinking about the whole “Substack has a Nazi problem” issue, and the problem we have now where so many people have this problem (again!) where they're stuck on a platform that spreads bigotry. I can’t help but notice that this was wearily predicted by minority folks a long time ago. I remember publicly complaining about it when all the big name transphobes moved there, and it’s like… if you had actually taken us seriously at the time you probably wouldn’t be in this mess now?

Pet peeve.. if you are advertising an online tech event that anyone can join, regardless of where they live, please advertise the time in UTC as well as the local timezone. I know my own local timezone relative to UTC off by heart, but I have no idea what it is relative to US Eastern or whatever

This is pretty awesome. An enterprise bargaining agreement (i.e. union contract) locking in a 4-day working week with no loss of pay. First time that’s happened in Australia, apparently

There are very few situations in life where I think that plastering Pride symbols on a business establishment actually helps much as a safety signal (mostly I think it’s just an empty gesture companies do every time Mardi Gras rolls around), but the laser hair removal clinic is a huuuuuge exception to that rule. This one really did help, especially because they used the progress pride colours and not just the regular rainbow colours. This is a good way to signal safety to trans clients

Cross study comparisons are tricky but nevertheless this is striking: A study of men in tech finds 80% believe women in tech are treated equally to men, and only 6% say that there gender inequality exists. In contrast a study of women in tech finds that 50% report having experienced sexism in the workplace

Fuck me. Okay not only is @huggingface using 91 of my GitHub repos without permission, several of those are private, have always been private, and some of them contain proprietary data that is not cleared for public release. This is extremely bad behaviour, and I don’t even know how they got access to some of them.

Every now and then I look at the current state of the US anti-trans legislative maps maintained by Erin Reed, and am shocked to realise that the place I did my postdoctoral work many many years ago is now deeply hostile to me. I actually quite liked Ohio once upon a time, but hell will freeze over before I ever go back

One of the many little frustrations I have, as a generative artist who writes all her own code and whose art doesn’t implicitly rely on large databases of training data lifted without permission from other artists, is that in the wider world outside a narrow tech community, people don’t draw any distinction between my artistic process and “feeding keywords into DALL-E”. I’m seriously considering abandoning the term “generative art” entirely.

Guardian Australia passive aggressively refusing to link to the hagiography articles from the front page and only going with the mockery and the war crimes article. I imagine they’re constrained by their parent and sister organisations and can’t be too blatant in saying what they think, but credit for finding a way to quietly make the point.

Okay. The mere fact that I saw Mark Zuckerberg posting on fediverse today is a pretty good sign that it is only a matter of time before I end up having to see Libs of TikTok or Gays Against Groomers. I had quite enough of that from twitter. I am absolutely not letting that shit back into my life.

Preemptively blocking the entire threads.net domain.

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

And on a personal note, yes I am pretty angry that so many people are fine with throwing trans people under the bus. Fediverse is basically the last place left on the Internet that feels safe to me. If threads content starts intruding here and I end up repeating the twitter experience I think that will be the end of social media for me. There’s nowhere else left to go

Okay. So.

I have spent a solid half of my day dealing with yet another piece of transphobic garbage written by an academic statistician. It is time I will have to account for to my employer. It is time lost that hurts my prospects for continued employment.

Once upon a time I had to manage these things every day. I lost that job. So I am going to quote Toni Morrison. She is talking about racism here, but (as is often the case when Black women write) it is equally appropriate to transphobia

Ah joy. I see that Australia is yet again having a political fight over the Religious Discrimination Bill and it is truly fascinating to watch as various Christian lobby groups try to simultaneously argue that (a) they don’t in fact discriminate against LGBT people but also (b) if the law is changed to make it illegal for them to do so it will cause the destruction of the Catholic school system. Not sure you can really assert both those things at once my dear

I have tried my best to keep up with the language. Truly. I gave up my pedantic obsession with the meaning of “ironic”, “literal”, and many many others. But try though I might I cannot stop myself from flinching every time someone uses “exponential” to mean “big”

Well that's bloody fabulous. TIL that even though I have my linkedin feed set to "sort by recent", the platform is still doing algorithmic shenanigans to it. For a very brief window in time it showed me a post from a friend of mine whose work I enjoy reading (less than an hour old), and the moment I refreshed the page it disappeared again. The post is still on her profile, but it has completely vanished from my feed 😠

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

For the love of all that is good and pure in this world, I am begging social media platforms to make it an actual option to have a simple chronological feed that shows every post from people I follow, in the order they were posted and nothing else. I don't want to see what they liked, I don't want your suggested content, just let me see posts from people I follow. At least make it an option for me FFS

I was reading a thread about how the norms around blog posts have changed over the years, where “writing something up a blog post” now has a kind of formality to it that it didn’t have 20 years ago (yes, I did in fact have a blog in 2003), which in turn makes blogging feel more like work than joy. This seems like a genuine cultural loss.

So okay. Maybe I can do my part next year. And maybe my last post was a sign that my 2024 blogging resolution should be “I am here to fuck spiders”

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

@johnmackintosh I feel like the “notes to self” style is actually a good way to write blog posts? I’m sort of exhausted with this idea of blog posts as a professional career-advancement activity. Like, maybe it’s just okay to write the post you wanted to read and leave it at that. Not everything in life needs to be a goddamn side-hustle
