Using AI to add bugs faster woo!

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/11/chatgpt-ai-will-co-pilot-coders-to-new-heights-of-creativity

This misses the point that understanding and debugging are the rate limiting steps, actually writing the code often isn’t

This will write a lot of code with little understanding, which to me is a retrograde step

Old man shakes fist at cloud, I know

markus,

@graemewinter "free up coders to new heights of creativity", because if there's one thing that's really holding us back, it's a lack of creative code.

For reasons that I cannot disclose right now, but will soon, I recently looked into BIMI. And... I have some concerns. BIMI is a spec built on top of DKIM and DMARC, and allows companies to show a logo beside their emails in supporting frontends (like gmail). It requires purchasing a very expensive certificate, I think the justification for it is dubious, and I am not a fan. But even if we put that aside, it's also very strange on a technical level. 🧵

markus,
@markus@uxp.de avatar

@hanno it's called a "verified mark certificate" because it certifies that they verified that you truly are a mark.

If only my knowledge of EU law had the desired impact this fast every time 🙂

My father wanted to pay a EDF French electricity bill from a Belgian bank account, and was told that this was not possible because the bank was outside France

I formulated a stern email to EDF for him, in French, stipulating this was not allowed as a reason within the Single European Payment Area (SEPA), and within a few hours they relented in a grovelling email!

Hot take:

Every terminal emulator that interprets "bold" as "make the foreground color brighter" has a bug.

Every terminal program that relies on "bold" to be interpreted as "make the foreground color brighter" has a bug.

Foreground colors 90 to 97 (and, by the way, background colors 100 to 107) exist and are unambiguous. Use them, ffs.

App developers: if you use notifications very sparingly, for things that I actually care about, I'll leave them turned on and even appreciate them.

But if you abuse notifications and hit me with too many, I'll block notifications from your app. Globally. All of them. And then I'll forget about it, and never revisit that decision.

Once you hit that point, it's too late. You ain't coming back.

Think about it before you decide to do notifications.

Public utilities do not need to make a profit. They are there to enable society. Suggesting to privatise the road network would be hilariously unpopular.

Eek. Apparently liblzma (part of the xz package) has a backdoor in versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1, causing SSH to be compromised.

https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4

This might even have been done on purpose by the upstream devs.

Developing story, please take with a grain of salt.

The 5.6 versions are somewhat recent, depending on how bleeding edge your distro is you might not be affected.
