On my mental soundtrack today, because the sweet young medical professional who I consulted with the other day had never heard of Frank Zappa, let alone his classic musical rant about woowoo-purveyors, making me feel even more of a geezer than my CrankyBod was doing. 🤣

It's lovely, by the way, to live near the gloriously complex confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers. Having grown up in the very different Hudson River Valley, the nature geek in me is fascinated by these examples of rivers that have more room to wander.

dkozlov,
@dkozlov@mstdn.games avatar

For those not familiar with either or both river systems, the Hudson is bounded by dramatic cliffs (the Palisades on the west bank) and hills for much of its more-or-less straight north/south course, and is a tidal estuary a great ways north of where it opens into New York Harbor and the Atlantic. Whereas the Willamette and its tributaries, once down from the Cascades, have a whole broad valley to mosey around and flood into (dams notwithstanding).

Very low-energy today, especially after shlepping around a local rescued/redistributed food pantry yesterday. On the plus side, I scored some nice items including lamb chops and a kabocha squash. So I expect to stage an extremely laid-back spoonie home-cook version of Chopped in my kitchen before the weekend is out.

LOL the van sure does run a whole lot better with enough transmission fluid in it. I am certain I told the shop to check that when it was in for servicing in January, but either they forgot (it was not mentioned on the invoice) or else the transmission leak has gotten worse. 😝

I feel like we need a catch-all medical term for all the mental health shit people are experiencing these days because the system is fucked.

My vote is "societitis".

dkozlov,
@dkozlov@mstdn.games avatar

@PacificNic I've been referring to my own bunch of societally-induced mental health shit with phrases like "situational depression" ... and then adding that it's totally reasonable and natural to respond to all the crap happening at all levels of society with feelings of depression (and anxiety and on and on); further, IMO such situational depression actually is a sign of mental health, because one is not simply going into denial of the reality crashing down around our ears.

I haz a new bed as of today, courtesy of friends. Even more than the attractive bedframe, with under-bed storage drawers yet, I treasure the gel-and-memory-foam mattress for promising the ol' CrankyBod<tm> a decent night's sleep for a change. We'll see how sleep goes tonight.

I often wonder, people who are still masking diligently in 2024 to avoid a neurodegenerative virus, what they were like as toddlers.. because the amount of fortitude necessary in a world that has decided to move on… there surely must be interesting backstories

If people dare say to me “still masking huh” my saccharine sweet yet simultaneously deadpan response is, I’ve read too much

A random comment posted in convo of the original tweet 6th infection since 2020 Tested Positive - Me Hi all. Hope all are well. I am very sick with Covid again although this sixth time has been very different and much worse. Aside from the headaches that accompany the illness what stands out to me is the extreme tiredness, lethargy I'm experiencing. This afternoon I was in my kitchen making something to eat and passed out. I didn't have the strength to stand, luckily my wife helped. I lost n father in 2020 to Covid so I immediately checked my Bloc oxygen, it was holding at 96, back up to 97 now. Is it me, does Covid symptoms worsen with every subsequent re- infection? This is concerning. I am 46, extremely fit all my life. Just catching a cold is not common for me. Wonderir how others have felt as they've been reinfected numerou: times. Thanks!

@Lorrrraaaaine I was pretty darn clear that my all the adults in my life were imtent on gaslighting me, and pathetically useless in protecting me from the school bullies ... so I eventually stopped asking them for help and started just telling them what I decided to do. If I bothered to tell them anything at all. These skills came in handy re COVID... like with a now-former friend whose exact words were that she was "no longer living in a COVID reality" ... that was an easy bye-bye!

LOL I have so many at-home things on my to-do list, but today somehow nothing seemed so important as getting out and wandering about. I'm wary of going too far afield with the way the van has been behaving recently, but I can still make a decent mini-jaunt out of local parks and such.

Hope springs eternal in the avian breast: these two were evidently hanging out in this parking lot waiting for handouts, smelled my lunch, and came over to investigate. Sorry, frens, I don't mean to disappoint but I doubt French fries are good for you. (Or for me, TBH.)

Haven't been to visit this other nice riverside park in awhile - glad to find its parking lot relatively empty, and no longer dominated by a pickup truck with a huge American flag lashed to its bed so it trails in the mud. (I always wonder at these folks clearly violating all the official rules for respectful display of the US flag that they purport to love so much... 😄)

Happy spring! Catching some rays, such as they are, at my favorite accessible riverside hang. Intending to do at least a little outdoorsy stuff, spoonie style, before trundling back to the lair again. That lair may be in a new location, but its occupant is still the same old semi-feral introvert geezer who needs some escape from peopling every now and then.

Somehow this musical nostalgia blast from my childhood past popped up on one of my feeds recently. Though I don't remember this particular video clip from a Smothers Brothers show, my whole family were big fans of their music and show back in the 1960s. The cheeky/trippy way they staged this mime-for-the-tape performance is so typically clever. And so dang '60s.

@donkeyherder @tiffanycli @PacificNic I know I've gone through a huge grieving process over having to give up so much public life because of COVID risk factors - as well as grieving the demonstrated callousness of so many people high and low who want to prioritize their flights into pretend-normal over other people's health and lives.

dkozlov,
@dkozlov@mstdn.games avatar

@PacificNic @donkeyherder @tiffanycli Yeah - but unlike the article author and all the other escapees to pretend-normal, I did not run away from that grief nor indulge in risks to self and others to numb it out. I stay responsible to self and others. So I have no patience or sympathy for the folks who have all the resources to avoid risk but would rather do denial instead.
