Dave Edmunds - Repeat When Necessary

As you may recall, Rockpile put out a bunch of records during their brief lifespan mostly not under the Rockpile name. Here's one of Edmunds' two.

This starts out with the one-two punch of Girls Talk (Elvis Costello) and Crawling from the Wreckage (Graham Parker) - Edmunds wasn't much of a songwriter, but he was an great interpreter & player.

@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@hotdogsladies Parker was definitely the definition of an angry young man, with a very sharp pen.

The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book. Of course our team is fully available to help if they'd want to set up Mastodon on whitehouse.gov. I believe governments should not rely on 3rd party platforms to connect with their constituents.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@Gargron Which, truly, I'd love to be able to do.

Unfortunately, @trumpet has elected to not federate with threads at all...even if I want to follow one account from there.

It's regrettable.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner I'm quite aware that I can switch servers, but this one has been good, I’ve supported them, and hope they'll reconsider this particular position.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner I don't really understand why…maybe you can't "block" just the stream and allow users to follow individuals (which is all I would want to do).

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner It's not like they couldn't set up a server and do that anyway, should they wish to…

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner Huh? That's not what I mean.

I'm saying Threads could set up a server and then "misuse" the incoming content and metadata, train against it, whatever, and no one would necessarily ever know.

Preëmptively blocking before ill intent is shown seems more than a bit reactionary. Although then people would say that Meta has shown ill intent on other platforms, so… 🤷‍♂️

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner @eatyourglory It's more that I probably still don't understand the "Federated" timeline (which is what I meant by the 'stream’).

And people wonder why Mastodon can be confusing... :-)

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner @eatyourglory So it's really "local +”, basically. It's not really "federated", because it's not a stream of the toots from the servers you federate with...only those followed by users.

Of course! ;-)

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner @eatyourglory I get that it's what Federated has been defined to mean. I'm saying it's not what a normal person would think it was doing...that's all.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner When you need a long post explaining why things don't appear when searching (etc), you must recognize a "normal person" doesn't have to be someone who has used anything else at all. It's unexpected behavior.

When we all use a term like the “fediverse”, it implies an aggregation of separate servers coöperating and acting like a “universe” of content...and that search would find things in that universe.

Saying “that's not how it works" doesn't mean that's not how it should work.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner Learning something doesn't make it "good behavior" - it means you just have to deal with it.

There's a difference between “intuitive" and "that doesn't make sense to a normal person”.

Again - I get it, this is how it works. But that doesn't mean it's good. It just means it's how it works right now.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner Well, no; the current server design forces local storage, but that doesn't actually have to be the case.

Anyway - this is unproductive, I know. It is how it is…everything has its frustrations.

Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

Back in the day, I gave a friend a Wire record, and he gave me this…the hardcore album for people who don't like hardcore.

And for people who do, too. It's kind of the definitive statement of what hardcore could be when put in the hands of guys who play anything, in any genre, but chose to do this. They're not referencing Ornette Coleman for nothing.

No better hardcore, in my opinion.

Alison's Halo - Eyedazzler (1992-1996)

Dubbed "Beautiful Noise” music (aw, c'mon folks, it's mostly shoegaze), these folks didn't last long, despite clear talent.

This collects basically all their output on two LPs. Lots of good stuff beyond the one track that was on Still in a Dream.

(Allmusic compares the vocalist Catherine Cooper to Liz Fraser, and I think they couldn't be more wrong…)

Verve - "A Storm In Heaven" (1993)

This record falls into that weird category for me, of records I was obsessed with when they were released, but then immediately lost all interest in the band for all subsequent releases (apart from that b-sides e.p. from the same year).

It's still sounds great. Dreamy psych prog shoegaze (?). Hard to classify. Terrific guitar on this.

Holy cow what an awful show. So sorry for everyone who put in good work to make it happen.

@glennf I think that's it. Certainly that phone battery has to die soon, since it's been weeks, months, or more.

@kevinteljeur @janl I would generally discourage use of SuperDuper on a NAS unless you're using an iSCSI volume. Images are just too flaky with networks (which is one reason TM fails).

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@kevinteljeur @janl I think everything has a certain amount of trouble just beacuse of the number of moving parts and points of failure that are beyond software’s direct control.
