Das muss diese "hybride Immunität" sein, von der alle inkl Christian Drosten reden, oder?

@thomasfuchs that's still a thing? I think I created one like ten years ago but had no use for it, so I voted no here on a technicality

The homebrew pypy formula cask thing explains that it installs its own pip at "pip_pypy". https://formulae.brew.sh/formula/pypy

  1. Does this imply that homebrew Python and homebrew Pypy have two different, separate package libraries?

  2. Should I be alarmed that the Homebrew pypy formula claims that it is an implementation of "python 2" & makes reference to a path with "python2.7" in it, despite pypy official insisting they support Python 3.10?

(There's also a pypy3.10 formula in Homebrew. But not a pypy3)

dngrs,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@mcc homebrew keeps separate libraries for each python you install, also e.g. for CPython 3.10 and 3.11 - which makes sense because not every package is compatible with every python version. But it's also python's flavor of DLL hell (homebrew's not to blame here). Separating pypy even with equal version numbers also makes sense because there's not CPython ABI for that

@ekuber it's WordPress plugins messing everything up all over again! (My personal favorite from that era: replacing quotes with pretty quotes in everything, including source snippets)

I put it off but time to open the box.

Last time I bought a MacBook I promised myself that it would be the last time I ever bought an Apple product. I am so sad right now.

So if I were going to install TikTok. Do I need to run TikTok's app in a VM and if so how do I do so https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/24/23805530/tiktok-text-posts-micro-blogging-twitter-threads

Just went to the bother of taking 12 full-screen screenshots only to discover that if you take a full-screen window screenshot with Windows 10's "Snipping Tool" it is defaced with a single-pixel fragment of the Snipping Tool UI. Every time. All these screenshots are now potentially useless. This is the thing Microsoft aggressively deprecated the old "Print Screen" tech for.

I am continually shocked that Microsoft is a real company that actually delivers the software they deliver.

@mcc sorry to "not all OSes" here (my vibe is "FYI", not "I'm a smartass"), but Macos ships with screencapture (1) that continues to work as God intended. Just tested it with the winit fullscreen example and it does seem fine, unfortunately the example only shows a black screen so can't be 100% sure 😅

Business pro-tip: if you reach out to me five (!) times about your product (that I signed up for) and I haven’t replied, it’s because I don’t need the handholding / upsell / personal touch, just take the hint.

dngrs,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@fasterthanlime I honestly consider the default assumption that one likes to be pestered with newsletter and upsell emails borderline abusive. It's a nuisance in isolation but cumulated over all products used it's a huge cognitive burden

at some point I'm going to have to write a blog post talking about the significance of bit depth in linear PWM LED drivers when applying a gamma curve, and the challenges involved when designing the driver electronics that attempt to solve non-linear brightness performance.

dngrs,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland have you heard of the HD108S? 16+5 bit brightness, per channel. Very impressive little things.

dngrs,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland nice! without a clock pin? (Downside in my book but eh, as usual "it depends")
