9 times out of 10 if I say something derogatory about the haskalah someone will inevitably complain that I'm insulting secular Jews.

Which is a whole big bag of some kind of hangup that would be interesting for some Jewish Studies department to field research on.

Maybe we could fund that instead of the new holocaust museum in Beavertown, Somestate, USA.

By the way, the haskalah was slow poison and it's still rotting away our insides.

@raf @pixelartdragon Raf said it pretty well. We "modernized" (which is a weird thing to say anyway) as a reflection of the European enlightenment instead of some other more organic direction(s) we probably can't even imagine.

I think some people connect it to themselves as secular jews because they think down deep secular is modern and smart and scientific and religious is backwards bumpkin shtetl idiots they are subconsciously embarrassed by.

@shekinahcancook I think you're missing the huge implications of the haskalah. If we had moved forward organically there would likely not have been huge fractures in European Jewry and the backlash including the cultural trappings around ultra-religionism.

You're talking about your dislike for current social splinters which is fair enough but only exist because we toadied for the Europeans in the first place.

@TonyStark after this famous photo was taken they answered the phone of of one of the victims and told his wife her husband was dead and then they marched through the streets one of the holding up a heart in the air.

This incident is what the red hands stuff refers to.

Gross shit happens in conflicts. Choosing to use those as symbols is fucking weird. Choosing to use those symbols to deface memorials to the dead on another continent is full cycle back to gross.
