@jpmens cert validation is a bit of a tricky mess in s/w because we the industry have not yet made it easy enough to register and renew them, not to mention trust anchors and collecting a decent amount of entropy. Yes, there’s acme and letsencrypt and EST and SCEP but it’s not enough, especially if we have applications on a device that intersect multiple trust domains.

Once in a while, I read a story about the iPhone and realise just how far behind Android it is.

    Take this: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/03/24/ios-18-home-screen-app-icon-customization/

Have iOS users really been unable to arrange their homescreens like this? Even the very earliest versions of Android let you place icons and widgets wherever you wanted.

Mind you, I remember diehard iFans declaring that the iPhone keyboard didn't need to change the case of letters when the shift key was pressed 😆

@Edent If this is the biggest "innovation" in iOS 18, Apple is in big trouble.

When someone doesn't really know what they're talking about, but are utterly convinced of their righteousness, which of these phrases are they most likely to use?

@Edent I am utterly convinced that I’m not a stochastic parrot. But good luck proving that!

Do any of you have good pointers to articles or research about various #AI technologies being used either improve or disrupt Internet, network, and communications infrastructure?

I’ve seen mention of machine learning (ML) being used to optimize routing. Also seen mention of AI used for improving security (defense) - and improving attacks.

Anyone have good pointers to info about those kind of things? (And other ideas?)

I’ve been doing searches, but it’s hard because of massive AI hype.

@danyork contact me oob next week. There wide swathes of work to improve network infrastructure.

Count me as one of the people who actually liked the #TouchBar on my MacBook Pro. It isn’t something I have to use.. it never became a strong part of my workflow. But now and then in different apps it provides a quick and convenient way to do things. I always kind of wished it was on the Apple magic keyboard so that I could program some shortcuts into it.

However, that is all going away…

@danyork IMHO the touchbar is inaccessible. Try closing your eyes and changing the volume / finding the mute button...

    @danyork@mastodon.social avatar

So will we see more #TwitterMigration after the latest news out of the birdsite? Or will this be something mentioned but then not implemented? Will it be policy or just publicity?

And will people migrate here or to Threads? (Or BlueSky?)

    We shall see..

@danyork Honestly, He's not getting enough ad revenue and the money has to come from somewhere. And there are people like me who hold a handle but almost never post anything (I mostly post to remind people that I'm not there). This will be his way of cleaning out dead wood, showing the advertisers that there are REAL eyeballs, and getting some moolah. Or not, if the place remains a sewer.

How could he NOT mention Madonna, Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, or Dolly Parton,, Grand Master Flash, Carlos Santana, Prince(!), or ground breakers like Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and Sheila E, or even Karen Carpenter, women drummers!! And that's just 2 minutes of thinking about it. And this at a time when women are dominating the field.

    Deep Thoughts:

    1. Nobody ever enjoys refactoring someone else's code.
    2. Everyone can clearly see the logic errors in other people's code.
    3. Few understand other people's code.
    4. The world runs on refactored code.

@mmasnick @slashdottir Thanks, Mike. I should have written something more important: this game gives people a feel of what it must be like to be those who review questionable material on sites like FB. Your point about evolving standards adds another twist for human beings: how fast do we adapt? What is left to understand is how do Scooby Snacks (rewards) change the equation?
