My husband bought a can opener I can't use to open cans. It's handheld. I have no idea how it works. Must we make everything so complicated because a lower profit margin is unacceptable?

Ok. Late in the day, I've seen y'all answering what would be for me the next day's question, and I keep asking myself, what time zone are these people in?!?

I forgot there was a chart...

I'm reading these statistics on WWI and the numbers—hundreds of thousands killed for a 5 mile gain in advantage.— are shocking.

I won't be doing this month as we will be out of the country (!) for a good bit.

Typing that sentence makes up my mind: I won't be taking my laptop. Which means no social media and yes to paper journals where I'll collect facts and impressions and emotions to be brought home like a bee with pollen stuck to its fuzzy legs.

It will be a needed break to determine exactly what I WANT to do with my writing, rather than what I feel a pressure to do.

And I'll miss y'all's answers.

Wondering today why white folks hate the term "white privilege" but so heavily rely on using the term "underprivileged"?

Y'all, when you're remembering the anniversary of Kent State that occurred May 4, 1970, docket the calendar to remember Jackson State that happened May 15, 1970.

Every time I tell a story, the listener says, you should write about that.

I guess I should make a list of these stories that hit but, man, there seems to be a huge divergence between what I like to say and what I like to write.

MC POV: Anything you're a snob about?

Don't even talk to me about mayonnaise unless it's homemade. Blender mayo, lots of lemon, freckled with cayenne pepper. Slap it on a tomato sandwich with white bread and serve it with iced tea garnished with a sprig of mint.

I'm not talking about mayo or sandwiches or tea. You get that, right? I'm talking the authentic. I'm a snob about drilling down to who you really are. And being proud of it, no matter how much others ridicule it.

Ha, ha--after asking about BlueSky, I see where it's an app for the phone. Other than Instagram, I don't put social media on my phone. So much for that.

I thought I would be clever and count down from 40 laps--my watch drops laps, so I have to manually count. But it got me confused. I usually use rhyming to keep track (one and done, two for you, etc.) I lost count and did too much. I was trying to ease back up to a mile, but I jumped from 1220 yards to 1480 yards. Came home and took a nap!

Why is your MC the way they are?

Before I answer this, I want to say: I spent 8 years leading a weekly writing group of men and women experiencing chronic homelessness. Every week, we gathered at a table and wrote. When the newspaper asked for our opinion on a homelessness initiative, I said, I'm not going to write because I haven't been homeless. Leroy Scott said, Ellen, you've been with us 6 years. You have the right to answer as much as any of us.

I woke up at 3:00 last night. Went into the front room. Thought I was looking at the streetlight. It was the moon. Clear and bright and so close I thought I could spit and hit it.

Y'all, the national Methodist Church just overturned its ban on LGBTQ clergy serving in the church or performing same-sex weddings in the church. My godchild was severely punished for officiating at a same-sex wedding. She is ecstatic.

Memory:
Eating artichokes as a child. Working forever toward the heart, scraping off the meat of each leaf with my teeth. The warm butter for dipping, the Bugs Bunny marks left on the denuded leaf.
Then the heart.
Mother's ability to remove the entire choke in one circular motion, releasing to our waiting eagerness the rich, thick, meat of the heart.
Then adult me, burning my fingers trying to release the heart, scattering the choke's thistle.
God bless the first human who ate an artichoke.

When I was a child, I was a terrible malapropper or one who constantly uses malapropisms. My parents were most impressed. I'd say, It's raining torments. They'd say, yes, in a way, it certainly is.

For Black History Month 2023, I reviewed the work of an African American writer each day. Because of the liturgical calendar, this year I'm doing Contemplative Writing Prompts for Lent, which has been most of February. But. You can read the reviews which, of course, are still relevant. Follow this link and work your way backwards.

We were having an intense conversation with the boys about life and what is necessary and evolution and the conversation turned to Venus, at which point my husband said something about it being farther from the sun than Earth, and I said, no, we know Earth is between Mars and Venus because that's why Marvin the Martian wants to blow up Earth: it blocks his view of Venus.

MC POV: What do you dislike about yourself?

Oh, God, it's my earnestness. Like, for instance, prepping for my interview with Mr. Price. Mr. Price is a regular person, not an expert like the 2000 people I prepped at Grantham, Reed. Being diligent, I videoed myself asking the questions. Good enough, I thought, until I watched it. My careful voice, my serious expression—it made me want to vomit. I'm so full of it.

Who is the best friend in your story?

It's so nice when I can answer these questions easily: Amy is the best friend. Sarcastic, lovely to Imogene but not letting anything slide. Her expression deadpan except for her red-lipsticked mouth, which squirmed like an earthworm on a fishhook. That's Amy.

#WordWeavers What kind of dragon (behavior or looks) would your MC be?

She would be Puff, the dragon that exists only in the time when they felt love, that cannot escape that time, that will end this pitiful song not by slinking into her cave but, because she is a she Puff, will rip through the autumn mist of Honalee and stomp howling, crashing free.

#WordWeavers How would your MC handle finding a spider in their home?

So, yeah, I just did a search of the novel to see if Etoile encounters a spider. Rat, mouse, roach, lizard, and a dead Napoleon House waiter—yes. Spider, no. How, you wonder, could I forget if it had spiders in it? Because it's a chaotic burst of a book that I unrolled in a fever-dream. Etoile, caught in this net, wouldn't pause over a spider, unless it was crawling across her cheekbone. That would get her attention.

@ellenmorrisprewitt@writing.exchange avatar

What was the worst job your MC or SC ever had?

Etoile worked in an ad agency. It wasn't so bad helping create campaigns. But then she impaled her boss on his crystal obelisk award, and that kind of soured it.

After Elijah McClain's death, Colorado "banned carotid choke holds, made it easier for individuals to sue police officers, and strengthened the rules on uses of force. This year, they banned using the term "excited delirium" in law enforcement training and as a cause of death...That diagnosis has been largely discredited among medical professionals."

"Largely discredited" means the AMA, the American Academy of ER Medicine, etc do not recognize it.
