#WordWeavers Who is the best friend in your story?

It's so nice when I can answer these questions easily: Amy is the best friend. Sarcastic, lovely to Imogene but not letting anything slide. Her expression deadpan except for her red-lipsticked mouth, which squirmed like an earthworm on a fishhook. That's Amy.

We were having an intense conversation with the boys about life and what is necessary and evolution and the conversation turned to Venus, at which point my husband said something about it being farther from the sun than Earth, and I said, no, we know Earth is between Mars and Venus because that's why Marvin the Martian wants to blow up Earth: it blocks his view of Venus.

Me, for the win, in scientific conversations.

MC POV: What do you dislike about yourself?

Oh, God, it's my earnestness. Like, for instance, prepping for my interview with Mr. Price. Mr. Price is a regular person, not an expert like the 2000 people I prepped at Grantham, Reed. Being diligent, I videoed myself asking the questions. Good enough, I thought, until I watched it. My careful voice, my serious expression—it made me want to vomit. I'm so full of it.

Y'all, the national Methodist Church just overturned its ban on LGBTQ clergy serving in the church or performing same-sex weddings in the church. My godchild was severely punished for officiating at a same-sex wedding. She is ecstatic.

When I was a child, I was a terrible malapropper or one who constantly uses malapropisms. My parents were most impressed. I'd say, It's raining torments. They'd say, yes, in a way, it certainly is.

Wondering today why white folks hate the term "white privilege" but so heavily rely on using the term "underprivileged"?

Every time I tell a story, the listener says, you should write about that.

I guess I should make a list of these stories that hit but, man, there seems to be a huge divergence between what I like to say and what I like to write.

I woke up at 3:00 last night. Went into the front room. Thought I was looking at the streetlight. It was the moon. Clear and bright and so close I thought I could spit and hit it.

For Black History Month 2023, I reviewed the work of an African American writer each day. Because of the liturgical calendar, this year I'm doing Contemplative Writing Prompts for Lent, which has been most of February. But. You can read the reviews which, of course, are still relevant. Follow this link and work your way backwards.

Memory:
Eating artichokes as a child. Working forever toward the heart, scraping off the meat of each leaf with my teeth. The warm butter for dipping, the Bugs Bunny marks left on the denuded leaf.
Then the heart.
Mother's ability to remove the entire choke in one circular motion, releasing to our waiting eagerness the rich, thick, meat of the heart.
Then adult me, burning my fingers trying to release the heart, scattering the choke's thistle.
God bless the first human who ate an artichoke.

31: Where do you write?

In the overstuffed chair in the TV room or the overstuffed chair in the front room or the overstuffed chair in the bedroom--hardly never in the office I set up. But I do Zoom in there and the room holds all my Mardi Gras supplies and my oldest grandson sleeps on the day bed in there all the time, so it doesn't go to waste.

@Bluegrass_Nomad I thought the same thing! I haven't had either Ayu's or the praline one. My favorite of all time is the Bittersweet Confections chocolate king cake....

So I just finished an exhaustive submission to a small press. Almost two days of marketing plan, book jacket, elevator pitch, log line, tag line, MC description, etc. Then didn't file it. I had decided that early on, but the process was incredibly enlightening on this novel I've been working on for two decades. I do feel these months of responding to questions helped me to succinctly introduce my story--thank you!

Okay, so I'm going to type out a sentence, and I want you all to finish it, but instead of doing deep thinking about it, just type the very first thing that pops into your head. I know this will be hard for many of you, but try it! LOL

If I could do whatever I wanted to right now, I would _________.

Why is your MC the way they are?

Before I answer this, I want to say: I spent 8 years leading a weekly writing group of men and women experiencing chronic homelessness. Every week, we gathered at a table and wrote. When the newspaper asked for our opinion on a homelessness initiative, I said, I'm not going to write because I haven't been homeless. Leroy Scott said, Ellen, you've been with us 6 years. You have the right to answer as much as any of us.

Why is your MC the way they are?

When Coot was 14 years old, he was accused of murdering his baby sister. When he refused to confess, the corrupt sheriff beat him, causing traumatic brain injury. Between the accusation and the injury, Coot lost his family and life as he knew it. After 8 years in state hospital, he spent decades on the Memphis streets, searching for Delia's killer. He is a kind, loyal, generous, protective, funny, confused, fearful, stubborn, wise, forgetful man

My husband bought a can opener I can't use to open cans. It's handheld. I have no idea how it works. Must we make everything so complicated because a lower profit margin is unacceptable?
