pika backup is a GUI over Borg, and it's genuinely the best desktop backup software I've used.

The seasoning is the burning of the oil into a polymer. If you're seasoning under the smoke point, you're not applying the seasoning (ie you're not making the polymer), so I'm not sure what the result is...

I suspect you're getting some burned material, but less than is ideal, or you're hitting the smoke point without realizing it.

i tried Logseq tonight, just to try it.

On one hand, it has a clean, nice interface and it uses plain text.

It also makes some interesting design choices to keep the system easy to use, some that I think could be beneficial to adopt.

But boy is its file format odd, and the fact it can't run on the web (AFAIK) makes it a bit of a non-starter for me.

One of the ways that web applications won over desktop application is the power of URIs.

With a URI and objects accessible on the web, I can get access to an article, but also an email, a calendar event, etc.

With desktop apps, if I want to "link to an email" it's virtually impossible outside of very specific application like Emacs that allow interlinking.

I feel like we're close to seeing this solved, but until then, the web has a hug advantage.

On that topic... it would be really nice if files on a filesystem had some kind of stable ID that worked separately than filename.

    I find it more ominous than perhaps I ought that this little digital clock will not let me set the date beyond 2050. Intellectually, I can see it’s to make the single button interface less unwieldy— so I don’t need to press the button 100 times just to set the year— but it also is an unintended memento of death to come. And the reasonable but disturbing reality that I and this timer will not be at all the same in a quarter century. The timer will be garbage, or maybe recycled? what about me?

    What hosted mail service do you use for your business?

    I host my own mail in my personal life, but my business email is hosted.

    Gandi is now charging for their hosted mail, and I don't want to use Google.

    I'm looking at Fastmail and Protonmail. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with either for business, or has another recommendation?

    A bit of a programmer rant...

    People wonder why I like ORMs even when they're unnecessary. Firstly, I've never liked SQL. I think that writing queries to a RDBMS is something that a computer should do, akin to compilation. In the few times when extreme optimization is warranted, low level code can be generated to suit that specific case. In other times, ORMs usually provide a more natural interface to data that increases readability and code flow.

    I entirely agree. SQL feels like a poor abstraction, one that should be relegated to the past, with a standard binary interface being offered, first optionally, then SQL being deprecated.

    After a long time of thinking about it, I'm strongly considering retiring this account. Here's why, and what I'm likely to do. I'm open to feedback from followers on alternatives.

    I've used the name emacsen online since roughly 1999, and I still see myself associated with it, and making a single user instance was a no brainer.

    But these days, I run an entire other instance, and a vast majority of my posts are from @serge

    The main reason I created Babka was that I didn't feel Jews were safe on the Fediverse. While the mainstream Fediverse is better than Twitter, it's still unsafe for Jews, and Babka puts in significant effort to make it safe for Jews online.

    And frankly, if this project can't succeed, it's likely due to still not being able to have a safe space for Jews online. And if that's the case, then why be on the Fediverse at all?

    If hundreds of hours spent on both engineering, moderation, and education can't fulfill this simple need, then there really isn't much hope, and running a single user instance might offer me some temporary reprieve, but it won't change the deeper fact.

    So I'm likely to keep this account up, but do an account migration. Then, if the project does fail, and I really want, I can migrate back here.

    What do folks think?

    If (more like when) I migrate, I'll use Mastodon's migration feature, so no need to do explicitly.

    As for being unsafe, I've had many experiences on the Fediverse that mirror the kinds of experiences I and other Jews have had on Twitter. This includes both finding and being subjected to hate speech and harassment from antisemites.

    In some ways, the Fediverse is worse for Jews in that other admins will happily say they are against hate speech while accepting antisemitism.
