The lone surviving Alexander 'Greek' Thomson Lamp Standard on Queen's Drive is looking rather sorry for itself at the moment having been vandalised with silver spray paint. Anyone know who to contact to get it cleaned off without damaging the details underneath?
An unusual cast-iron gravestone in Old Kilpatrick Church Yard in West Dunbartonshire. I'm presuming this dates from around 1829, the more recent of the two years on it.
I love it when I come across an old bootscaper still in place. This one, outside a Victorian townhouse in the Park area of Glasgow, is particularly nice, if a little bit worse for wear, and is nearly identical to the ones outside 10 Downing Street in London, the traditional home of the British Prime Minister. And before anyone asks, yes I really am geeky enough to have spotted this!
Decorative cast iron lamp base outside Charles Wilson's 1857 Queen's Rooms on La Belle Place in the West End of Glasgow. Despite the many layers of paint, you can still make out hippocampi with intertwined tails in the middle and dophin fish at either end. The name at the bottom indicates it was created by the Shotts Iron Works.
I love these railings around the 1882 Jacobean style former Woodside Public School on Eldon Street in the West End of Glasgow. According to the foundry mark on them they were made at the Gowanbank Iron Foundry which (I think) was based at the Old Basin Works on the Forth and Clyde Canal in the north of the city.
Peeling 'corpy green' paint on one of the cast iron lamp brackets on the 1894 Prince of Wales Bridge in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow. This shade of green paint was favoured by the City of Glasgow Corporation, the forerunner of the current Glasgow City Council, and used throughout the city on everything from buses to window frames.
Before and after work on the #fireplace
Lots of hard work, paint stripper (water based), heat gun, scraping, sanding and water later and it's almost done. Not too shabby.
100 Candleriggs. This is one of Glasgow's few remaining cast iron building facades. It's part of the City Halls and Fruitmarket complex in the Merchant City.
So in a peculiarity in my extremely explicit lease, I'm not allowed to have any outside fires, but I am allowed to have a grill. Enter hardwood charcoal. Currently seasoning my tiny dutch oven. There may be recipes inbound. #castiron#food
A quick #CastIron#skillet. It's the workhorse of our kitchen and it basically never leaves the stove. Feel a bit bad about making it look so dirty but I felt it needed some extra texture...
Also let's be honest, I probably leave it dirty a little too often 😅
I think this is one of a number of cast iron gas lamps outside the late Georgian townhouses along Bath Street in Glasgow. Most have lost their tops, but many of posts, with their distinctive bird heads, remain.
Cast iron calling card. This access cover features the name of the plumbing company which installed. I've seen these in Edinburgh before, but this is the first one I've encountered in Glasgow. It's from a back lane in the west end.
A wonderful lion pillaster on the combined drinking fountain and lamp in Dowanhill Park in the west end of Glasgow. It was made in 1903 by the MacFarlane and Company foundry, Scotland's most important manufacturer of ornamental iron work between 1850 and 1965.
@ai6yr here's a #CastIron question for the community... How do I use it on a glass cooktop without scratching the glass cooktop? It's not an induction cooktop. There are still resistive coils under the glass.
My cast iron pans that I've had forever are not smooth on the bottom. I guess I could get out the sand paper and try to make them smooth?
