Several people in my timeline have mentioned recently how good the movie Monkey Man is, particularly from the trans representation angle. If it is in fact "trans rights the movie,” and not “trans panic the movie,” the trailer does a really poor job communicating that. I've seen the trailer twice in theaters and thought "please put that movie as far from me as possible" both times.

What people forget about Luddites isn’t that they protest technology, it’s that they were protesting factory owners who used technology to create shoddy products while oppressing labor.

Editing to say: Whenever I hear someone say Luddites in a derogatory way, especially about , I try to offer them links about this and am surprised when some people still take an anti-Luddites stance

Something I found really interesting while watching the eclipse coverage this past week:

To our knowledge, eclipses like we experience on Earth are unique among star-planet-moon systems we know about. By coincidence the distance between the earth and sun is about 400 times greater than between the earth and moon, and the sun is about 400 times bigger in diameter than the moon. These facts let us experience eclipses where the disc of the sun is blocked, but the corona and prominences are not.

I saw something else on here around the time of the eclipse too:

Eclipses of this type are limited. Gravitational forces on the moon are slowly pulling it away from the earth. So, there will come a time a few hundred million years from now where the moon will no longer fully block the disc of the sun.

I'm fascinated that SFMTA still runs in some way on 5¼” floppies – technology that has been outdated for almost my entire life.

However…

Public transit is a vital public service that we continually underfund and underresource yet still expect to efficiently meet the needs of the public.

And on top of that, we write ledes like this, implying that maintaining public infrastructure is a waste of money.

I wonder if the kind of people who complain about people looking too much at their phones would complain less if it was more visible what you're doing. Smart phones have basically compressed a whole bunch of big gestures telling everyone what's up into pulling out and using one's phone for 30 seconds.

  • Pulling out a map
  • Pulling out a travel guide/dictionary
  • Openly or covertly glancing at your watch
  • Pre-counting some amount of money
  • Pulling out your tickets and keeping them in hand
  • …

@uliwitness Often, if I want to use my phone and communicate that it's not to disconnect from what's happening around me, I'll lay it face up on the table and use it flat, rather than holding it up close, in an attempt to say "I'm doing something relevant to our interaction" or "just checking soemthing quickly here."

I dunno if that actually succeeds at communicating that, but I do hope it does.
