Of all the clothing materials I ever had to hand-wash neoprene is the most frustrating and unwieldy 😅

Ghost in the Shell (1995) remains a remarkable film.

Ever time I watch it I forget how short it actually is, just 1h22m. With it's fairly dense plot and a lot of stuff going on it still takes the time to be calm and deliberate, to linger on a single visual and some music, and even an extended audio-visual vibe intermission.

It does so much with so little.

Wide shot of an old victorian-style hall. there's a car wreck and a six-legged walker tank on the ground level. the back wall has a large relief of a phylogenetic tree, pale light shines from above. a figure sits hunched on top of the tank

esther,

Maybe more relevant today that ever: that scene when Kusanagi talks to Batou about how a lot of her employer's property forms parts of her body and her identity and she would loose those and become someone else if she ever quit.

That one really hits home now as so much of our online lives is controlled by some billionaire how doesn't care one but about us.

When a lot of takes about Fediverse admin politics are floating around, and there certainly are today, sometimes the best thing I can do as an admin is read them carefully, examine if I can apply anything from them to my work and how I see myself ij this role, especially if that feels uncomfortable, but not argue about any of it, even if I disagree. It’s unlikely anyone needs to hear my half-finished thoughts while I’m still at the stage of managing my own discomfort.

Running an instance for more people than just myself is a position of power. And as such it needs to be questioned and examined constantly. That may not be the fun part but it is a necessary one.

esther,

@bumblebeedc an admin doesn’t even need to be power-hungry for this to be an issue. There’s already a base level amount of power that comes with the role and it’s important to acknowledge that.

Ultimately I have the keys to this space and if I wanted I could to whatever I want. Apart from some legal restrictions that I’m bound to, nobody can actually stop me. People on the server have to take my word for it that I won’t.

It’s all built on trust but trust is weird when the people involved are on a significant power differential.

esther,

@leah yes I remember reading that one a while back

I did my fucking taxes and I definitely deserve a treat for that :Blobhaj_Read_MD:

esther,

This is significant because this type of paperwork is a major anxiety trigger for me and I've gotten into trouble a lot of times because I just couldn't get it done.

update!

When I recently got my first results from this camera back from the lab I was worried that there might still be something wrong. The scans had a thin and very straight line in them, always in the same place.

I went back to the lab and showed them the scans, they agreed to scan the negatives again. Today I got those result back and there is no more weird line. Yay! That means it's not an issue with my camera but their scanning process.

You can see the vertical line in the fist image and it's not present in the second scan of that same shot.

(They also did the second scan in TIFF format with much higher dynamic range and less padding in the histogram, that's why there's so much more contrast in that one.)

Same shot, labeled "second scan (tiff)", the vertical line is gone, the image is much higher contrast, but there's also significant dust this time

esther,

However, when I talked to them I also pointed out that some of the scans had significant dust on them and they told me it must be dust that was on the film during exposure. Which doesn't make sense because the dust was white in the positives. Dust on the film during exposure would leave the negative white because it's blocking light from hitting the film, which then would turn in to a dark sport in the positive.

And in these two scans you can see there's clearly different dust specks, which would be impossible if they were part of the exposure.

Also they apparently cropped these two scans differently and that's just unacceptable interference from a lab.

@jacqueline what are we looking at?

What I would really love to see on LinkedIn and other sites isn’t a career ladder guide for junior people but lateral movement guidance “So you figured out after ten years that you hate software engineering? Here’s what other people with your role fucked off to do”

esther,

@eveiswurzig @shippychaos I heard this from several people now and I’ve been there too for years. The lock-in is such a strong force.

Sorry, I confused Visual Studio and VSCode in my last post. Deleted it.

The announcement here is about Visual Studio (NOT the same as VSCode) https://devblogs.microsoft.com/visualstudio/visual-studio-for-mac-retirement-announcement/

Thanks @james for pointing it out :)

Scary git stuff I've done for the first time today: Merge two entirely unconnected repositories with parallel histories. :Blobhaj_Read_MD:

I learned: git merge has an --allow-unrelated-histories option.

A little nice-to-have advice:

If your budget allows for it, over-provision your servers by quite a bit. On the list of not-entirely-necessary-but-nice things I would put this pretty high up.

With many instances running on VMs, the compute power you have available varies, sometimes a lot, and the load Mastodon caused is also not at all constant. If low power and high load come together, you'll be happy about that headroom.

It's also really nice for maintenance. If your instance is almost at capacity under normal load, doing stuff like database dumps, search index rebuilds, or installing new Mastodon versions will take significantly longer and impact your member's user experience noticeably.

esther,

@Tealk It's good advice in general but some things have more predictable load characteristics than others and Mastodon can be quite variable in unexpected ways

esther,

@bascht Object storage, using disk on an instance for more than a handful of people is usually a recipe for disaster

esther,

@bascht the later you do it, the more it hurts
