Did you know? Mastodon offers RSS feeds for people's public posts. So if you want to read someones public stuff but maybe your server can't see the other person's profile or maybe you don't want all the communism you're reading to be visibly linked to your main account where your cop parents could see it or whatever, just drop the profile link into an RSS feed reader.

It's also useful for following announcements that might otherwise get lost in your timeline. I for example use it to stay updated on @ MastodonEngineering.

And BTW: content warnings will become the main headline in this context

A little nice-to-have advice:

If your budget allows for it, over-provision your servers by quite a bit. On the list of not-entirely-necessary-but-nice things I would put this pretty high up.

With many instances running on VMs, the compute power you have available varies, sometimes a lot, and the load Mastodon caused is also not at all constant. If low power and high load come together, you'll be happy about that headroom.

It's also really nice for maintenance. If your instance is almost at capacity under normal load, doing stuff like database dumps, search index rebuilds, or installing new Mastodon versions will take significantly longer and impact your member's user experience noticeably.

A few weeks ago, an ex-boyfriend was expounding upon his new favorite toy: a souped up handgun that he has been taking to a firing range where he lives in Texas.

I replied with a story of my own discomfort with guns and a rejection of the joy of using guns that I had as a teenager.

I felt kind of bad because I think my reply annoyed and alienated him. I didn't hear back from him.

Having read of several more shootings this week, I have lost that sense of feeling bad over my reply to him.

esther,

@timberwraith I thought like this too for a long time, and I still struggle with diverging from that belief, but hearing anarchist and especially Black voices talk about community defence made me realise it's far more complicated.

Giving Fairphone shit because while trying to build a long-term viable, sustainable and socially and economically fairer device they also think about the people in the real fucking world who are supposed to use them and offer them the software most of them rely on (like Google Apps) is more toxic purism than I can stand.

People who are willing to suffer in their life by using something different, something slightly incompatible to what the rest of the world uses already do install roms and run whatever on their machines.

Getting real actual people to buy a phone that's not built to be thrown away in a year of two, that highlights the values of sustainability is a huge win.

And making the medicine ("your phone might not be as fancy as your peers' phones") taste sweeter ("for 8 years you have access to all the applications you need for your life to function within a digital society") is just a smart move.

esther,

@tante and often, especially for these low-stakes tasks like organizing a picnic or whatever, if not using corporate-controlled tools is important enough to put in some effort, a non-tech solution might have a lower barrier for most people after all. “Give this person a call or email them, they’ll take care of it” is remarkably accessible and flexible

Is it possible that some people come up with overly complex architectures because they're worried that showing something too simple will cause others to question their worth? It's a theory I have but not sure how to test, so I'm just following the logic.

esther,

@afilina Definitely seen this in action many times and I had to defend my own simple designs countless times. It's an uphill battle

esther,

Trans people's sex lives get so rarely talked about openly. It feels like a huge taboo thing. As if we're not allowed to have an active sexuality at all.

When you get a link to someone's personal website, do you explore it further than just the page you were sent to? (Assuming you follow the link at all)

Please elaborate if you like.

A lot of computer enthusiasts really need to understand and accept that computing and the internet as they actually materialized in our world (as opposed to their idealized mythology), and also to large extents free/open-source software, are nowhere near the universally liberating forced they like to see them as, but have capitalist, conservative, and reactionary politics embedded in them.

That’s not to say there isn’t anything good or useful about them, but the good parts often need to be deliberately pried apart from the context they appeared in and nurtured using very different politics.

They also need to be critically examined and rejected if they turn out to be harmful, rather than accepted as neutral or even inevitable.

esther,

@doc1429 computing systems have a tendency to reproduce existing power structures, to codify them in software and to justify unjust processes by separating them from human actors. They often help systems of power resist change, conservative in the very literal sense of the word

esther,

@doc1429 a lot of open source software is maintained by major corporations (Google, Amazon, Apple) and they don't do this out of the goodness other hearts but to further their interests. They also often rely on the unpaid labor of smaller maintainers which reproduces systems of worker exploitation.

A good example are Google's and Apple's respective browser engines, Blink and Webkit, two of the most used pieces of open-source software, and both are built with business interests in mind (e.g. DRM technology, or not supporting features that would make native apps less necessary), and not with the wish to make the best possible browser engines.

@chris_radcliff sometimes if there’s a lot of specific scenes and perspectives I want to remind myself of but usually my visual memory is quite good so I don’t rely on that aid much.
