I build backends, apps and sometimes break them, practice martial arts and enjoy video games. I believe I have seen the whole Internet once, maybe twice.
@carlton all I heard so far is 1.5-2 hours depending on usage which seems unreasonable for anything but baking a cake and having a recipe always present :)
@swansinflight@leighelse I have friends who are excited for the EVs because they are fun to drive. I can see that, acceleration is amazing.
Then I see people who believe they are saving the planet (and some feeling morally superior doing so). They got all the marketing how and why they do so in the most sugar costed, unscientific way possible. I can understand why they don’t like seeing these things being pointed out.
Having trained my first model on the 4090 I’m considering spending 500€ on optical cables to move my ML / gaming system in one of the racks in our basement. My office is getting way to hot and it was only around 25°C outside, I really don’t want to find out how horrible it’ll be once we pass 30.
@webology yep, that’d be the plan. I need to extend DisplayPort and USB by 15m.
Optical DP cables are fine. USB3 is tricky, but active copper extensions work well. They have a limitation of 5m per extender - you can chain 4 extenders but that would only allow one device as a hub is considered an extension as well.
There are also optical hubs tunneling everything via one cable, but they are >1000€ and limit DP to 120Hz at 4k which is fine, but I’d like a bit more for my gaming rig.
The next version of Firefox might enable DNS over https by default.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. I use #DoH, with my own DoH-fronted recursive DNS, but if I didn’t do that, I’d prefer my DNS lookups went via my ISP than via Cloudflare etc. (A&A offers a DoH resolver too, but that’s besides the point here.)
I will be interested to see the UI for this, and whether it will be active choice, or (as today) a menu option a few clicks deep.
@neil I really appreciate the fact that we try to push DoH. From a privacy perspective it’s IMHO the right way forward. And the small performance hit will likely go unnoticed by many.
But we are also at the point where I consider CloudFlare a danger for the open Internet and an organisation like Mozilla should be able to host a DNS server if they want to push DoH.
Out of frustration, I adopted adding "--skip-checks" today to a Django project, and performance increased 1000000 billionity infinity times to the moon and back. (It shaves off 10 to 30 seconds on reloading)
🤔 This project has two apps and is about as vanilla as they come. While I suspect I am seeing a bug, is anyone else out there seeing a huge local development performance increase when disabling them?
@neil@Edent Meet regularly messes up video on my Mac (hdmi - usb with a Canon camera). And it’s the only tool that got issues with it, so I’m fairly confident it’s not my setup :/
After having thought about the idea of creating a #Python group in my hometown #Pescara, the first #PyBeer meeting of the @pythonpescara group will finally take place tonight 🍻
I hope everything will be fine and there will be many more meetings in the future 👥
I started after dinner and seven hours later it seems to improve upon most of the mechanics of the first game. My only gripe is starting is so slow and the first four shrines feel every bit of a tutorial zone.
I’ve only seen a review and letsplay as I’m still busy with Ruined King, but it seemed like there’s so much stuff you can combine and do that an more exhaustive tutorial would have been a good idea :/
@webology@carlton so it’s either casually play with the mechanics and take your time or spend 5 weeks studying every possible thing you can do and speed run the game in 13 minutes?
@webology@carlton might be some time before I start it. BotW was one of my least favorite Zelda games and I do not have my hopes up the new one will catch my interest. I’ll likely wait for it to be on sale :/
My friend got Overwatch to play with me and I had to buy a lower rank account so we could group together because she's Silver 5 and I'm almost Grandmaster. But holy shit, this rank is just WILD. I'm a tank main and if I play tank I can just walk straight into the enemy spawn and 1v5 their entire team. The whackest part is nobody has any self awareness, so they don't go "oh, this is a high rank player", they just start flaming each other. Then when I try to tell them it's nobody's fault, I'm just from a higher rank, they go "no you're not" and just right back to flaming eachother ☠️
@malwaretech when playing with a friend who’s lower gold matches usually consist of gold to plat, lately diamond so they seem to properly match ranks now.
Everyone in this ranks deserves to be grand master but is held back by their team. In every single game.
This includes the widow who plays „50 shots still no kill“, the 1v5 „I decide when we hard engage“ Tracer and my personal favourite „lol lock a real ‚healer‘“ doom when someone is on Zen.
BBEdit is the piece of software I would give up last. When I get a new machine, it’s the one I install first. It’s 30 years old today. They seem to have a sale on, which I highly recommend to you: you’re likely happy with your editor — I know I’m happy with mine 😜 — but one day you’ll ask, “How do I?” And the answer will be BBEdit. Enjoy! 🚀
@carlton@bbedit it is also one of three applications (others are vim and git) that never lost me any data (and actually saved my work a few times during unexpected shutdowns)
I usually try to not comment on online drama, but let’s try something new. Let’s talk about the „good parts“ instead.
There are #Mastodon servers out there which aren’t a nice place to be at. And you might be unlucky ending up on one getting silenced and defederaded because it’s ran by a mini-want-to-be-Elon.
But there are also instances ran by people like @jerry and @thegibson doing an exceptional job, caring and generally are just good people.
Brought to you by a client who told me they had „zero downtime“ just to nuke every background worker in existing every time they deployed ignoring it there was actual work being done on it.
„But uptime monitor says our API was always available, so it’s zero downtime“ I guess technically correct :)
@killyourfm I’m curious which apps you are concerned about with the M1?
I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon gen9 which runs perfectly under Fedora (sans facial sign in as I’m too lazy to setup howdy). Battery life is better than Windows 11, Intels GPU might be a deal breaker depending on your needs :/
