Very thoughtful piece by @snarfed.org@snarfed.org titled "Moderate people, not code".

https://snarfed.org/2024-01-21_moderate-people-not-code

You should run a FediForum session about this!

We're reaching out to the developers of various apps who might be interesting to see demos of at FediForum in March.

Who would we talk to at Misskey? Intro appreciated.

@bart is coming to in March and wants to talk about:

Fediverse usability / welcoming newcomers to feed

Rights Expression Languages, Innovative Clients, Annotations in the Fediverse.

Imagine if you could express who gets to do what with your posts in the Fediverse. Like "No commenting" or "don't send it to this server over there".

Sounds interesting? Join us in March: https://fediforum.org/

@naturzukunft wants to talk about https://rdf-pub.org at .

"rdf-pub is an activity-pub server implementation, that is not limited to the activity-stream vocabulary, but supports RDF per se."

That should be interesting!

The next FediForum is March 19 and 20, more info and registration: https://fediforum.org

@flyboy is coming to and wants to talk about:

Friendica, moderation, AI based moderation.

This would be the first time the subject of -based is raised at FediForum, I think. Should be a fascinating discussion to which people will very likely bring passionate arguments. But that's one of the beautiful things about an unconference: smart people figuring out hard problems, together.

@thisismissem is coming to the online unconference in March and wants to talk about:

Moderation tooling, Trust & Safety, Funding

@thisismissem Not that the problem is solved already :-)

@srosset is coming to #FediForum and says:

All the FEPs are very interesting as simple ways to extend ActivityPub. I'm also naturally very interested by any subject around the interoperability between #ActivityPub and #Solid (as #ActivityPods developer). I'm also interested about how to use ActivityPub to bring Open #Badges to a social dimension (see this other project I've been contributing to: https://activitybadges.org)

@rimu is coming to in March and wants to discuss:

PieFed, a Lemmy/Kbin alternative written in Python with an emphasis on trust & safety.

We might see a demo, too! So much great software in the Fediverse! Innovation is thriving, and FediForum is a great place to find out more about it and perhaps talk to the developers.

Let's see what some attendees want to talk about in March.

@essentialrandom, for example, wants to talk about:

Interoperability of different activitypub-based software (and ideally also atproto-based)

fediforum,
@fediforum@mastodon.social avatar

@narF Sounds like a great subject on its own, or as part of a possible session on "pluggable algorithms".

When people register, we ask them what subjects they are most interested in talking about at . It's always a great variety of subjects from the very technical to the very social, from the explaining the fediverse to funding it, and so many more.

Those topics than usually lead to sessions called by attendees. You can see what they called back last year in March and September:

https://fediforum.org/2023-03/
https://fediforum.org/2023-09/

What topics will you bring to FediForum March 19 and 20?

is an unconference, that means you, the attendees, decide what sessions happen, not us organizers. We make the agenda for the day collaboratively every morning.

Never come across an ? Then you are in for a treat. It sounds disorganized, but it isn't, and most attendees of unconferences, us included, have learned to prefer the format over talking heads on a stage. One gets so much more done!

There's more info about unconferences on your website https://fediforum.org/

Looking at registrations for the next in March it looks like we will bring together a very international group of people again.

While we organize FediForum from the American west coast, attendees so far are not only from all over (north, so far) America and Europe but as far east as New Zealand!

Join us to discuss the future of the Fediverse? Registration open at https://fediforum.org/

Mark your calendars!

The next FediForum unconference for the people who move the Fediverse forward will be on:

March 19 and 20, 2024.

We will follow a similar format as we did in March and September last year, which worked out very well.

Registration is now open. Go to:

https://fediforum.org/

Don't know what to expect? See the notes and demo videos from last time on our website.

We are looking forward to seeing you in March.

We were asked the other day to explain how one proposes a session or talk at FediForum. There is no call for papers!

Indeed you can't. That's because FediForum is not a talking-heads conference, but an unconference (e.g. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference ).

This means the attendees decide what happens during FediForum, not us organizers. You come in in the morning of each day with session proposals. You announce them during agenda making in the first hour, put them on the schedule, and that's it!

fediforum,
@fediforum@mastodon.social avatar

For a field like the Fediverse in which community and collaborative problem-solving is really important, (and not Listening To The Expert) we have learned over many years that unconferences tend to work much better, so that's what we do at FediForum.
