from the infinite possibilities of the multiverse, i choose one thread and will it to be:

“No, Luke. I am your mother”

The recontextualized reboot of the full Star Wars trilogy, where in the Clone Wars, as Anakin Skywalker
became more erratic and obsessed with arcana of the Force, Amidala became more concerned for her own safety and that of her children, turning to Obi-Wan. In a fit of rage, Anakin tried to kill her, but with her latent Force abilities and those of the twins she was carrying, she killed him in self defense.

The Jedi Council, frightened by her power, abducted her children and sent Obi-Wan and Yoda on twin missions to hide the children with foster families and destroy all records

Obsessed with finding her stolen children, Amidala swore loyalty to Palpatine and set about hunting down and murdering every last Jedi to get her children back. She created the identity of Darth Vader to conceal
her true intent, strike fear, and fulfill her destiny to bring order to a galaxy ruled by men

there was a moment in my mid 20s when I got really into watching boxing matches.

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@lzg I think about Mayweather vs McGregor a lot, not because i watched the fight, but because i knew how it would end. It’s bloosport but there’s real skill to it, and you have to know how to take a punch Mayweather had logged the hours and McGregor was still “how hard could it be?” The interesting part was Mayweather kept it going for ten rounds

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Background TV as I wind down my work day.

I'll work my way through the main 9 movies over the next few days, and starting with The Phantom Menace might be sacrilege to some, but who cares.

Just opened my ThinkPad and for the second time in three days the act of closing the laptop to sleep it, then opening it again had caused Ubuntu to hardlock. This time I got a very brief small printout about "amd ring 0 error", then it went back to a black screen and I had to hold down the power button again.

I thought getting a ThinkPad, getting AMD cpu/gpu and picking the Linux distro Lenovo lists as supported would mean I got a minimally functioning computer but I guess not.

Watched the original Star Wars trilogy with the kid this weekend and it’s been a long time since I have seen it. One thing that really stuck out to me was… what, thematically, is the movie trying to say about droids? The message seems to be that they are regular people like everyone else, and also chattel slaves, and also that’s it’s fine and also kind of funny? Like both Han and Luke are repeatedly shown doing obvious villain shit to droids and I can’t tell why we are not supposed to care

flyingsaceur,

@glyph @grimalkina @cyberlyra TLJ was the same as ESB in that it went straight to “these characters don’t deserve to save the galaxy” and then ROTJ was like “let’s do ANH again with muppets”

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@glyph @grimalkina @cyberlyra not saying that ROTJ wasn’t good, but it retreaded old ground and set the precedent of “if Tatooine is so boring, why do the movies keep spending time there?” Jabba’s palace, gross eighties aliens, characters going on weird side quests, it all feels like Lucas indulging his storytelling tics and putting that into The Phantom Menace. Leigh Brackett took the sequel in a completely different direction, like Rian Johnson did, and the creators blinked. JJ Abram’s is no George Lucas, so Rise of Skywalker
wasn’t even an interesting mess like Revenge of the Sith

@brooke boost ttl would lead to boost traceroute to troubleshoot asymmetric boost routing caused by Boost Gateway Protocol misconfiguration or highjacking

Leonardo DaVinci would have been a horrible coworker. If you asked
him to do something he would take forever, hand in some halfassed doodle of a helicopter, and the bosses would love it. Everyone would talk about how smart the guy is. But it would take hundreds of years for anyone to get the idea to qork, and it would look completely different

One of the few things he actually finished was a simple ask: paint a lady smiling. It takes forever, everyone loves it, but you can’t even tell if she’s smiling or not

What an asshole

The US government's entire beef with TikTok is they believe it's spying on Americans for the sake of the Chinese government, as opposed to American social media companies who spy on Americans for the sake of local, state, and federal law enforcement and various intelligence agencies and literally anyone else who is willing to pay for that data.

Which is why they want TikTok sold to an American company willing to hand that data over to them instead of instituting actual privacy regulations.

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@sysop408 @nf3xn @gwynnion there is something up that such a ban would sail through with little opposition, something we wouldn’t see outside a SCIF. That being said, it’s a very bad look because “trust us we are the government” expired in 2017: the doors were publicly thrown open to foreign influence because large chunks of the government thought they had more to gain by letting it happen than by doing their duty

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@sysop408 @nf3xn @gwynnion having dealt with the Great Firewall and the accommodations vendors make, i see the asymmetry and i have an online gof where you’re coming from and i agree with you. There’s some
dossier that a legislator reads and they Get It. That’s one known unknown, but i can at least take
solace that they’re taking it seriously

There was also an influence campaign by a certain other foreign power that was downplayed and buried and probably succeeded, and the response appears to be to try to clean up the mess without acknowledging the existence of the mess. Was it because one major political party stood to gain a lot by just letting it happen, and they’re now hedging their bets if it works again? The reason for inaction, or at least giving the appearance of inaction, is a much bigger unknown and problems that are allowed to fester keep me up at night more than ones that are being handled
