I love creating new software.

"Okay, friends: we can have our own instance, with our own moderation rules, but we are all here for privacy: so absolutely no algorithms and no advertisements"

"Hey, I'm not a Mastodon, I'm just a really huge company who uses the most personal data of billions of people, feeding an algorithm with them and selling to advertisers, may I federate?"

"Sure, join in! Why not?"

Weird.

@elCelio

- as any social network - is not about privacy. You are intentionally broadcasting your information to the whole world, visible to anyone, exploitable by everyone, including , with or without .

For privacy use tools like .

With the situation, and possible other issues coming with AI and bots crawling, I was wondering if something like this could be a good addition to a Mastodon's server Privacy Policy.
Let me know what you think.

@mehdi_benadel

I think by posting on a public social network you have already agreed to make your content available to everyone on the world to be read and exploited.

It's like shouting out details of your private life on a public market place but demanding from all people that they cover their ears.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@mehdi_benadel

Public social networks are per design and per intention the opposite of privacy.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@mehdi_benadel Well, depends on what "anything" means, but indeed I am assuming that it will be used for AI training somehow.

[EDIT: THREADS HAS BEEN BLOCKED]

Okay to anyone who can tell me, HOW DO I BLOCK ?

I came and stayed because here is not under the thrall of almost all the nonsense that hurt my mental health and I left other platforms over.

I have no lust in having to deal with money driven algorithm influence.

Don't give me your arguments why it's not a bad thing if you feel that way - I'm not interested, just tell me how to murder that shit pre-emptively. My loss ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@mastodonmigration

By using the you already gave the permission to other servers "to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data".

If you don't want that then don't use public social networks.

@rsmedia @mastodonmigration

But by using public social media you already have invited the whole world into your living room.

How do I block all content?

First, Iโ€™m not concerned with Meta accessing and abusing my data. Threads joining the doesn't give them access to data they couldn't harvest through other means.

The way I see potentially degrading my experience here is based NOT just on seeing a bunch of posts from Threads users.

Thatโ€™s somewhat manageable through mute and block features. Of course, depending on the scale of Threads user posts in my TL (including by way of boosts from people I follow here), this could get onerous and impractical, quickly.

The way Threads traffic can change my Mastodon experience is if enough people I follow here start to follow a LOT more Threads accounts.

The audience size disparity will be evident in my TL and overall engagement.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Defiance

More people are competing for attention, but more people are giving attention, too.

If you want to minimize visibility competition from others you might set up your own server where you are the only user and block all other servers.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Defiance

Not trolling, just making the point that a larger community has upsides.

It's like immigration: some are afraid of more competition for jobs, but overlooking that there are also more people buying stuff and needing services.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Defiance Obviously it will depend on what users will bring, and I understand that many are worried, but personally I think that far most people on are just interesting and decent people. Just as in real life.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Defiance It will change the community for sure. But if people follow you now, it's obviously because of you, so why would that change because of celebrities? In contrary. As in real life, celebrities provide even more opportunities and topics to chat and discuss with friends about.๐Ÿ™ƒ

Statistics related to joining the :

Only a small minority of users (11%) are on servers that do not want to with .

It's roughly the same as four month ago: https://mastodon.social/@folkerschamel/110938499421631272. Main change seems to be fewer unlisted instances.

That's based on https://fedipact.veganism.social (probably manually curated) together with https://instances.social/instances.json

I'm not sure how reliable the data is, but it gives an idea of the mood.

@me_the_fl00f @Gargron @stux @Natanox @trumpet

I find it remarkable that some people seem to believe that @Gargron of all people has switched to the dark side. In the end, they are the only ones left to fight heroically against the rest of the world for the true good in the world.๐Ÿ˜‰

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Natanox @me_the_fl00f @Gargron @stux @trumpet

Fair enough, so let me revise my statement:

I find it remarkable that some people seem to believe that @Gargron of all people is naive, ignorant, egocentric, foolish and dumb. In the end, they are the only ones left who are smart, enlightened, selfless fighting heroically against the rest of the world for the true enlightenment in the world.

Better? ๐Ÿ˜‰

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Natanox @me_the_fl00f @Gargron @stux @trumpet

I just think @Gargron has a great vision to break down the barriers between social networks and create something great. That's why I'm surprised (and saddened) by the negative attitude towards him.

And I trust peopleโ€™s judgment. If you're convinced that interacting with people on is a bad idea, convince people instead of patronizing them with artificial technical limitations.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@Natanox @me_the_fl00f @Gargron @stux @trumpet

In other words, in your view, other people are just part of a naiv herd that doesn't know what they're doing, and so they should give up their freedom for their own benefit in order to be guided instead by smart people like you who understand what's really going on?

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@183231bcb @stux @Gargron @Natanox @me_the_fl00f @trumpet

I don't know these servers, but if they are samples for blocked servers, then I assume that there are good reasons for that. From what I've seen @Gargron is a quite reasonable person.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@gubi @Gargron

But that's my point: as admin you are taking away your users "free choice of non-cooperation".

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@gubi @Gargron Of course it's your choice. I just think that the logic of your particular argument you have brought in your previous post is flawed.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@gubi @Gargron
So your argument is that imposing your will on others is good because you are convinced that at some later point they will see that you have been right and thank you for it?

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@gubi @Gargron You server would be only storing data explicitly requested by your community members by following or interacting with people on . As long as your community members are not interacting with the kind of people your have mentioned such data won't come to your server. So it depends on the people of your community.

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@yala It's in the screenshot ๐Ÿ˜‰ Is there a way of uploading files here?

folkerschamel,
@folkerschamel@mastodon.social avatar

@gubi These "interactions" are publicly available and can be easily exploited anyway, with or without federating. A public social network is the opposite of a protected space.

That's different from your private address book on your phone which you rightfully want to remain private.
