The biggest hurdle in indie publishing—harder than writing a book, and writing books is hard—is "How do I get people to know about my book?"

So if you have enjoyed an indie published or small press book, tell people about it!

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@FeliciaDavin my buddy worked on his book for years, but hasn't published yet, I think because of this very problem

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@FeliciaDavin oh but my wife's aunt wrote these historical fiction books that are really good.

Based in Mongolia around the 15th century I think. its about a girl who kinda gets traded to a Kahn but then becomes a badass queen.

She writes fantasy stuff too, but I haven't read that yet.

Just finished the latest newsletter by @bphogan , where he talks about Web Analtyics https://newsletter.bphogan.com/archive/issue-29-measuring-traffic-and-renaming-files/

My question: Has anyone else used Piwik for web traffic analytics? Its an open source, run privately on your hardware kind of tool. Apparently they rebranded to https://matomo.org/

A private analytics server with Piwik was super easy to setup with Sandstorm, but I've been migrating things away from Sandstorm lately.

Anyone have any luck with Matomo?

@harald well heck yeah, thats a solid review. I'll put that on my list to get up and running!

frigginglorious,

@ocdtrekkie @bphogan the sandstorm piwik app has worked real damn well, to be fair.

Paternity leave is officially over. Being back to work this week... has sucked.

But I'm feeling kinda awesome about my standing desk setup in . And I fucking love the view. Was worth putting the window in, 10 times over.

Maybe 15 times over! I got the window cheap at auction for less than $20, and it took maybe 4 hours to cut a hole in the wall and fix the framing.

So if it were a $300 expense, and took 60 hours to install, it would still be worth it.

My wife and I, before we were married and kiddee 3 years ago, had a tradition of camping on Memorial Day weekend every year.

This year, I wanted to reignite the tradition, but she thought it would be too much work.

So I packed the gear and kids, and drove down to see my family and go camping in my childhood backyard.

My 2 year old, 3 month, and myself... Im happy to report we successfully made it through the night!

I don't know shit, but as a Mac user I like KDE as a Linux desktop, and customize it to be as Mac-like as I want.

Add in Toshy to convert all the keystrokes to be like a Mac (I've had trouble with kinto.sh for a while).

Use rEFInd to boot if it's Mac hardware (or not)

Kind of settled on MX Linux, but if I was a stone cold beginner I'd go for Kubuntu.

Every article or suggestion you read about distros that are good for Mac users are by people who seem to have never used a Mac. Ignore them.

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@billyjoebowers I was using MX Linux on an older macbook air. It was... wanting.

But I started using Fedora recently. Its badass. And almost feels cleaner than macos.

I'm organizing my desk and office drawers today. Downsizing for my move to shedStudio.

Does anyone else keep a bunch of old routers around? I have 6. Just in case the world ends and its up to me to repopulate it with wifi.

Trying to convert a Sqlite database into a mysql database is a certified nightmare. I had no idea... for some reason I thought it was going to be trivial :(

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@ocdtrekkie funny that you should ask!

I've been hosting a MediaWiki on my sandstorm server. I am trying to migrate that wiki to some bare metal on premises (ok just an raspberry pi in my basement).

Idk why I thought sqlite and mysql played nice together. Ignorance and hubris, I spose.

The next thing im trying is to get the new Wiki install to just use the sqlite db from my sandstorm grain. Now there's server issues :(

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@ocdtrekkie this wiki was actually hosted on a VPS first, before being hosted on sandstorm. I remember it as having a really easy built-in export / restore option... but hell if I can find that anymore. Maybe I dreamed it?

Man... I'd like to think I'm not an alcoholic. But I'm wrapping up my paternity leave now. I told myself I was going to take a break from booze to help adjust to being a working dad again.

The impulse to pour a drink is... much stronger than I'd like to admit.

frigginglorious,

@4bz actually the DB problem was a good distraction!

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@4bz if your built-in db is mysql it shouldn't be too crazy. But... I was the fool who thought sqlite and mysql would play nice. So don't listen to me.

I’ve been having a great time with my new @frameworkcomputer laptop. The flexibility is really unique. First I got to build the laptop myself with parts, and now I get it to be what I want it to be with regards to input and ports and such. I’ll probably swap out the screen bezel for a bolder color, though. The purple is not very purple. Worth the 6 month wait!

Framework laptop with keyboard aligned left and rgb macro pad on the right.

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@gabek @frameworkcomputer I didn't spring for the RGB button pad or the LED matrix inserts. I went with a plain ol numpad on my framework 16 instead.

I've been finding myself typing in a Lotta IPs while futzing around with stuff on my network, so I've been thankful for the numpad.

But I know someday soon people are gonna start cooking up cool projects... and I'll probably upgrade!

Do you have any cool use cases or plans for them?

Unfortunately, due to forseen and completely expected circumstances, I have horribly overbooked myself this week.

In order to make the Fedivision song contest deadline, I will be writing, recording, and submitting my entry tonight - in the next 3-4 hours, depending on when my infant wakes up.

I apologize in advance. May god have mercy on our souls.

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

Well... I think I'm gonna try to spend a bit more time on my track next year. And maybe I'll try to record instruments I know how to play.

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

I think my track had some redeeming qualities... but its understandable that it was no one's top three.

Maybe it would have made it into someone's top 10 :P

frigginglorious,
@frigginglorious@freeradical.zone avatar

@elsemusic aw no, the voting process is perfectly adequate. I liked having three choices!

Except I was only able to narrow my choices to 5... and then I missed the voting window.

I'm just trying to make myself feel better about this shitty, rushed song I made 😛

@mjdxp I put Fedora / Gnome on my Framework, mostly just because they guaranteed support, and ships with Pipewire by default.

I'm super happy with it.
