The Synology ecosystem is such a weird and wonderful little parallel universe. You just buy a server computer for your home and then you run commercial software on it which links up with apps on your devices and web frontends. It is all really charming and kind of baffling that it manages to exist, given what must be a tremendous uphill battle that they face against free or close-to-it ad-supported cloud products

I have a 4-bay NAS which is used as secondary storage for my photography, AND also as a primary back up for my work in process. I know, right? A little weird, but it works so well for what I need it to do.

Can’t sing it's praises enough.

I shared the stage with the fellow twice. He had a great story, a commanding stage presence, and deep respect. We shared agents.

Then he went off the deep end of madness. (And the agent dropped him)

As he undergoes trial today for basically destroying two lives and so much more, it's a fascinating - and sad - study of what happens when a mind falls out of touch with reality.

Visit my "Bad Things" page and read point #2. This is what I am referring to. I am convinced that years from now, scientists will look back and will have diagnosed a new form of social media-driven mental illness.

That is if there are still scientists in a functional democracy who support the study of science (read point #1)

Question: If we have an end to democracy, would that not mean that the risk of financial instability/shock would be lower?

One reason democracy could end is because too many people/corporations are looking at their own personal gain in that scenario. But take away the gain and would not the impetus be to make a change, presumably back to something resembling democracy?

So, the non-democratic admin should do anything/everything to keep the financial system healthy.

Well, this sucks.

After 3 1/2 years it finally got me.

Not doing so bad. 6 vaxxes, the latest in July. Stuffed nose, cough, tired, aches. But I did my usual walk this morning before I tested. My wife is negative so far.

It's a bummer sine I was supposed to a keynote in San Diego Thursday on AI.

Jim Carroll does his regular 7km morning walk. Feeling off, but not feeling awful. Hoping it clears fast.

    I will be starting the installation of Mastodon v4.2.0 on Masto.host.

    This is a large update and I will be doing a slow rollout, meaning that I will release it gradually to batches of servers and monitor how it evolves before continuing.

    Who relies on TuneIn for listening to our streams? They barely pay us anything (less than $8k a year) to put their stupid ads in front of our streams. Once we launch the Sonos App, any reason we shouldn't have them remove our streams?

    We’ve decided to keep things simple as far as subscriptions go. If you paid for “Premier”, you’ll automatically get access to the Mac app as we have changed “Premier” to “Universal”.

    I joined Mastodon 6 months ago today. I started out on another instance but soon decided I wanted my own little instance, just for me, because I wanted to commit to it here. So, @jimcarroll

    A few things I've learned along the way.

    1. I like it here. I have no intention of leaving.

    2. I like the oldtimers here. It feels like the late 80s / early 90s at times

    3. I like all the new people here. It feels like 2023 and gives me hope

    4. I followed a bunch of random people to start. That filled out my timeline

    5. The timeline is pretty rich and diverse - it teaches me that randomness of insight is a powerful thing

    6. I keep following most people who follow me - some are irresistible follows, and others fit into my 'random is good' insight discovery

    7. I don't follow you if you followed me but don't have a bio/profile! BIO, people - fill it out!

    8. I modified my server so I could do 1500 characters! That seems to be a good balance

    9. I think I have learned more about LGBTQ here than I ever knew, and I have deep respect for the community

    10. I only go back to the other site for weather info and airplane geeks

    11 . There's also a thriving AI community/news info that I need to get there

    1. I won't shut down my name there because I don't want someone else to take it

    2. I don't post there

    3. I try to engage here as much as possible. Engagement is key.

    4. I try to practice kindness. I remind myself of my "Social Media Serenity Prayer" before I post

    The Fediverse, for me, resonates nicely. Like you, I like it here

    I'll comment, too, that like you I am surprised there aren't more options to spin up a singer-user instance. I suspect (hope?) that more come along soon. Also with Calckey, which looks very promising.

    You are 100% in that this is NOT a competition. Different protocols / platforms do different things, and have different strengths and weaknesses. Learning how to best leverage each is key.

    It should be fun.

    It will be pumped out to my LinkedIn, Youtube, Facebook, and other channels. I use to pump these things out to Periscope too but no more. It would be nice to have a Periscope-like service here. (Ya, I've played with Peertube but I'm looking for live video embeds)

    Your Virtual Studio is impressive, to say the least.

    I was hoping this https://owncast.online/docs/embed/ would have been the ticket since it says it can embed in "any source"--doesn't sound like it will, sadly.

    I totally get the functionality you're looking for, though!

    Maybe someone else will chime in with the answer.

    Do you know if you can embed a live video source in CalcKey or somewhere else on the Fediverse?

    @jimcarroll would like to embed a live video feed, like Periscope did. Owncast lets you embed, but Mastodon does not so that's a no-go. His goal is to send out a post with the live video embedded in it.

    FYI: He does run his own custom Mastodon server. How cool is that!
