Heat pumps and induction ranges are two strong examples of products that are better environmentally and better products than their gas/oil competitors, for almost everybody. (EVs will get there, but they’re not there yet.)

Because carbon emissions are free, it’s important that low-emission new products be clearly better than the polluting status quo. It’s a high bar, it’s not fair, but I’m glad we have heat pumps and induction ranges as a model.

@waldoj I'm currently house hunting. I really want a kitchen with 240V because I want an induction range. Not because I'm a dirty green hippy, but because I currently use an induction cooktop and it works far superior than the alternatives. (The only thing it doesn't do well is woks and roasting peppers over flame.)

It's crazy that people are choosing a lesser alternative, all over irrational grudges.

I participated in a workshop by city of to discuss civic use of AI. I contributed a rubric of "assistive" versus "determinative". The first case may be a helpful use (subject to usual concerns about energy, creative rights, bias, etc etc etc). The second case is where things get dangerous.

What if they gave an election and nobody showed up?

State of Texas -- as part of its "screw with cities" agenda -- allowed some areas to vote yesterday to dis-annex from their city.

Some areas in voted to do so. River Place voted to dis-annex with one single vote. Not "by one vote", but one single person showed up and voted in this election.

Some areas didn't have anybody show up at all -- zero votes registered.

I fear for our representative democracy.

So Utah, having passed a transphobic bathroom bill, has launched an online form for people to snitch on folks they think are in the "wrong" bathroom or locker room.

Be a real shame if people on the Internet flooded it with fake reports: https://ut-sao-special-prod.web.app/sex_basis_complaint.html

Hey peeps ... there's election ratfuckery going on. The state is trying to undermine the local tax base by putting wingnuts in charge of property tax assessments. It's an off cycle election to try to discourage turnout ... so it's extremely important to show up.

The ballot is super easy and quick and there have been no lines. So please vote Austin. It would be better if you did.

Oof, so I did a dirty deed today.

We have rabbits that like to hang out in our back yard. They are a pair we see quite often and a few days ago I saw one of them gathering grass over on the side of our house.

Neat! They are building a nest!

Not so neat: they popped off the cover of our window well leading to our basement and dug a hole under there. I would have missed it had I not been looking for it. It looked like a small pile of grass until I pulled it back and saw the hole (cont'd)

@zalasur I'm glad you caught it early. I hope the bunnies find a good nesting place.

I'm not even bothering with this season of ST:DISCO. Every time I've tried a past season, I couldn't finish it. It breaks my heart, because I love the cast.

On the other hand, I adore ST:SNW to bits. I'm so ready for more of that.

The previous two weeks have been a steady crescendo of stress and anxiety as we approached the Open Data Day event on Saturday. But it went off without a hitch. We had great presentations, a bit of data hacking, and there were cookies.

I like this photo of me listening to a presentation. My friend Liani photo-bombing the frame seals the deal.

Unfortunately, ever since COVID nearly bankrupted SXSW, it seems like it's returned to suck the teat of whatever venture capital and sponsors are offering them.

Past years, we've seen this with web3 and blockchain. Now we're seeing it with AI.

I think if SXSW is to survive, it needs to disconnect from the hustle crowd, and reconnect with creators.

Good morning Democrats. It's Super Tuesday. There are two hotly contested races on our ballot.

  1. Incumbent Travis County DA Jose Garza is being opposed by a Republican-funded, Republican-backed DINO.

  2. A senate race between Collin Allred and Roland Gutierrez to pick who will take on Ted Cruz in November.

Check your registration and get your personalized sample ballot here: https://elections.traviscountytx.gov/voter-lookup/#VoterEligibilitySearch

Progressive voters -- please vote tomorrow (Tuesday) if you can. There is some serious hanky panky going on in the DA race. Republican donors and a sketchy dark money group are fighting to oust the incumbent.

We are going to be taking a trip to Austin, Texas for the first time this coming weekend. We would love recommendations for any thing we must see or do. We love nature and culture.

Do you have any recommendations for good cafés or restaurants? We are both vegetarians.

Thank you so much - we are looking forward to visiting soon!

Boost appreciated and suggestions doubly appreciated!

@bunvoyage17 @coffee Congratulations ... you picked the worst weekend of the year to visit Austin. 😂 SXSW will be in force, so you will want to steer clear of the city core.

(I'd say north of 38th or south of Oltorf should be pretty clear of that crowd.)

Walnut Creek park might be a place to catch a bit of outdoors, while avoiding the SXSW crowd.

They have a trailer at RADIO, which is a coffeehouse with a huge patio. But their parking is a nightmare, so be prepared.
