Aussies: when I teach in the US I toss out candies to students who complete challenges or catch a coding error I’ve made before I find it. Am teaching at UTS next semester & would like to do the same. Is it common to find a bag of fun size candies in Aussie supermarkets? Can I bring US candies or will this get confiscated at the border? If I bring candies, what are hard to get in Oz? I will, of course, also bring the Swift stickers :)

Hey chefs! I cook Thanksgiving. Most is perfect for us but one gap is a good orange root veg (eg sweet potato/yam/squash) w/texture that doesn’t repeat mashed potatoes texture & that has a good savory/sweet mix. Recs?
I could also use a green veg recipe that is a hit with picky eaters (getting that right for my kids is a constant challenge).
May your Thanksgiving be loving and wonderful. Peace.

@exchgr That was the good old days. Now it’s democracy vs autocracy. Many voters looked to balance the old forces - rep govs in dem heavy MA. Opposite in Kentucky. But now the middle sees if they give the right the keys we’ll lose representative government.

I love products but I'm surprised hasn't been refined for better coordination between devices. Oftentimes when I say "Hey Siri" a response battle ensues between my watch, phone, laptop, and speaker. To get the coordination I want, I sometimes have to sneak out of the room and whisper to my watch (I feel like an attorney speaking to a client on trial). Do others see this? Is there a way to improve things?

SciFi has taken up the "colony collapse" trope that bees are in danger. Apparently it's not true - there are more bees on the planet than ever before. Also: conspiracy theorists should note the NYT published this piece. There's hardly some sort of cabal hiding press that goes against a conservation narrative. When truth is found, it'll be reported on. When corrections need to be made, they will be https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/19/business/beekeeping-companies-colony-collapse.html

Mac-using hive mind: I find that sometimes my browsers will freeze and I can no longer use either Safari or Chrome. Force quitting and restarting doesn’t seem to solve the problem and nothing lingers in Force Quit after I cancel a stuck app but restarting the app doesn’t correct the prob. Restarting the Mac does. This occurs several times a day. I’m not using tabs excessively (3-8), but I do have Google Docs up in some and a JavaScript heavy text editor from my publisher in another. Any ideas?

@yatil Eric the cache clear using CleanMyMac seems to do the trick. Thanks so much for the suggestion! This’ll save me quite a bit of time each day. Really kind of you to reply. Cheers!

Oh - sorry, I got that wrong. It's now 85% recycled Vibranium. My mistake.

I’ve been trying to regain Spanish. Four years high-school and a summer in Spain but 35 yrs ago. Duolingo isn’t very good. Babel better. Memrise also ok, but I really like flash cards in Brainscape. They read aloud - have multi levels of retry, show written answers, and multiple words or phrases for a concept. For me Brainscape is the most useful.

If you are learning remember the entire semester-of-SwiftUI playlist (zero to full stack, 100+ lessons) is at https://bit.ly/prof-g-swiftui. And the sides for each week are in the open google drive under the course at https://gallaugher.com. Each week’s slides have review notes plus challenges and solutions. I’m on sabbatical this year but material is up for self-learners & other educators. And there will be MORE new content coming. Hack on!

Hoping to make a decision on where I’ll be teaching abroad (outside US) Spring 2024. Still open to suggestions from any universities. I need to teach in English but does not need to be an English-speaking country. A look at what i do in : https://youtu.be/e9FpboKo5LM and https://youtu.be/t7lh2O13YWg I don’t drive so need to be in an area that’s walkable or with good public transport. Also happy to share all teaching materials with local faculty so they can continue these courses.

I’m really struggling w/ one of my colleagues. We’re the two most senior faculty members in the program, same rank, she’s been there longer. I don’t understand all of the new scholarship and the new ways of exploring literature, but I want junior faculty to feel they have ownership and to build courses and chart our path forward . She’s so canonical she had objections to my proposed Irish Lit class. I don’t know how we can reach any kind of meaningful resolution and compromise.

gallaugher,
@gallaugher@mastodon.world avatar

@beatnikprof That’s really unfortunate. Sounds like “box checking” (as in checking the boxes of content > actual motivation & learning.) We usually feel that for electives, as long as the class has sufficient academic rigor and demonstrable learning, faculty should have a free hand. It’s really bad form to impose one’s dogma and structure when a talented colleague is executing in a way that best fits their style and knowledge in ways that reach students. Good luck.

Hey @gbhnews just want to say I enjoy P & J’s AM take. They’re great. Keeping the news, but just enough whimsy and positivity. Keep at it! Also more Wait Wait style fun on the weekends. Ask Me Another was a big loss. How about bringing something fun like that to the Hub!

We need to call out “Mamas for DeSantis.” They aren’t defenders of our children - they deliberately downplay the real problem that continues to harm kids. If you actually listen to kids & teachers, the concern isn’t library books or “too much LGBT visibility,” it’s guns. Kids have nightmares about guns in school. They are traumatized by active shooter drills. Fighting the library & the gay kid doesn’t make you a good parent. You are ignoring the thing that is actually causing trauma in schools.
