Streamer is mad about a programming exam and I'm realising how much some exams are about guessing what people mean (and how I've done well because I'm very good at that).

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@ahfrom On the one hand, understanding what someone meant to say, instead of just taking what they literally said, is a valuable skill. But it's not the one you should be getting tested on in an exam.

I also wonder if many programmers are uniquely bad at that. I definitely felt like that was the case when I was in college.

People who are obsessed with taking notes spend more time looking for a note-taking solution (or creating one) than actually taking notes.

@thelinuxcast Sir, you have the KDE logo in your name, you cannot judge anyone for fussing around with their setup too much.

When I launched @frontenddogma, I deliberately limited article coverage to 2020 and later.

I’ve just started to feature material from the 90s as well. Please tell me how you like it—and if you have useful (and reliably dated) references to add!

@j9t @frontenddogma That's a great archive. Seeing all of the references to "new" things like XML and Javascript reminded me of this podcast episode with Douglas Crockford, where he talks about the earliest days of Javascript and JSON adoption: https://corecursive.com/json-vs-xml-douglas-crockford

This ad looks like shit.

So a funny thing happens with the web:

Whatever becomes abundant loses impact for conveying value. High res photography was once a way to make a site look valuable. But Unsplash made it abundant and free, so premium sites move on from photos to illustrations.

“Premium” is a moving target.

AI-generated images will become synonymous with low-quality, low value. A smell of junk no (reputable) brand will want on them.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@danilo Yes! I saw a similar point made when an AI startup launched a service for writing cease and desist letters for you.

Someone pointed out that the legalese language in a C&D letter doesn't mean anything by itself; what it means is "I have hired a lawyer to stop you from doing this thing."

AI-generated C&D letters do not have that meaning. It only means "I have sent you an email."

Things don't convey ideas on their own. They convey ideas because a person did it and gave it meaning.

i saw a cybertruck irl yesterday and I YELPED bc it is so much uglier and stupider looking in person- the proportions are fucked, the shape makes no goddamn sense and it looked like a foil wrapped turd on wheels

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@ancient_catbus I still haven't seen one in real life. But I met a soon-to-be Cybertruck owner yesterday.

At a coffee shop, barista asked the guy, "How's your day going?" The guy replied, "Going great, just bought a Cybertruck." Then IMMEDIATELY turned to me and asked if I owned any crypto.

I wish I was making this up.

I really dig my still-new Mac Book Pro, but if I had to purchase it all over again, I think I would go for the 14-inch version rather than the 16-inch. The chonkiness of the 16-inch version is considerable.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@scalzi I used a 13 inch laptop for a long time, which was pretty cramped, so when I finally upgraded recently I bought a 16 inch laptop. That might have been too far. I think my next laptop after this one might finally be the goldilocks laptop.

Last political post. I'm getting US politics poisoned. I'm gonna nag some old HS friends about voting & go back to talking about ants for like A WEEK.

One last funny fact:
I have nearly 10x as many followers on too-obscure-mention fediverse as Jesse Waters has on Truth Social.

Waters has TV shows & 'books' (?) Says the billion-dollar social media company (that totally isn't laundering money) can't possibly be over-valued.

Uses it all the time!
I say? You'd do better with Pica's many scams.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@futurebird To be fair, ants outnumber Republicans by like a billion-to-one, so you're at an advantage there.

I was looking around to see if anyone is making a decent small (7"-8") tablet running Linux when I realized that no one is even making a good small tablet running Android. (Amazon and Samsung small tablets are not good...)

It's a reminder that Google once sold a GREAT small Android tablet, the Nexus 7 -- and like so many things the company has produced, killed it off in a fit of boredom or stupidity.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@dangillmor Apparently, a bunch of ebook readers (with e-ink screens) have come out in the last few years that run Android. I'm thinking about getting one of those -- all I want to do on it is type notes on a bluetooth keyboard outside.

Heck, if it can't play Youtube videos, that's probably a good thing for me.
