Like, when I say I aggressively “don’t care” if they’re dating or not, it’s not that I’m hostile to them dating— or not dating. I’m not even hostile to finding out that they’re dating. Good for them, etc.

But I am hostile to the flurry of people who insist on making it my business (which it isn’t) for their personal gain, ideological or financial.

Interesting side note: people seeking ideological gain are usually camp“they’re not dating” where financial is usually “they are.”

I kinda wanna unpack that (and maybe explain what I mean by “ideological gain”), but not now.

There’s more I can pick apart about the practice of these videos and how they parallel tabloids without the budget.

And some thoughts about how much of themselves performers do share just by being performers and maybe it’s a good idea to let them set the pace for that, instead of trying to grab more.

@emmaaum I have some doubts as to the people making videos like the one I mentioned as being part of the fandom proper. Not even in a “no true fan would” way.

Like, there’s a difference between speculation— which fans do, but it’s also something people do. They fill in blanks. And while it can go a bit far, the thing I’m describing is also deliberately deceptive and an attempt to exploit both the celebrities and the fandom.

At that point are they still part of it? I guess it depends?

@emmaaum I bring it up bc I think, in that way, it’s preying specifically on the fans who have a bit more trouble with critical thinking, and are more likely to jump onto a link that confirms their theories, than someone who is able to look at the thumbnail and go: yeah you’re lying bc you want something from me.

Assuming they’re even part of the fandom, the people making those videos aren’t likely to be reached by statements like yours or mine, IMO. Or even admit publicly to doing it.

@emmaaum fair. Season 1 is encapsulated imo. It can be watched with no expectation of a continuation and still feel satisfying. And while I do like season 2, that feeling of encapsulation isn’t really there.

Honestly, (and interestingly, IMO) they could probably have ended it a little sooner and saved some of that for season 3, and had an even shorter but more self contained season.

Which tracks as part of a larger thing with Season 2, where I like the story, but kinda wanna recut it.

@emmaaum oh yeh, it is. It’s also an adaptation of a webtoon which also lends well to a serial narrative.

I should point out— while it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea— S1 is one of my fave dramas. If one is ready to stomach a gory and grim beginning, it’s got a lot more hope and sincerity than one might expect. And it subverts some very tired tropes that needed it.

Ultimately it’s about how important human connection is. Expressed sometimes in brutal and gut wrenching ways.

@emmaaum thank you for sharing that with me. One, bc it helps me fine tune recommendations and that’s always helpful. :blobcatdance:

But also bc I have trouble in a similar, though not identical, direction.

For me, I find the fact that I relate to Hyunsu, the protagonist who has effectively given up (in his case courtesy of trauma), and taken to isolating himself, and finds it in an apocalypse scenario, gives me good feels.

Is there anything (show/music/etc) that does that for you?

@emmaaum actually, I remember you talking about cradling pain wrt Moonlight Chicken and Thai media in general.

I’m not fully sure I follow the concept bc I didn’t check the examples, as I haven’t watched it yet.

But, my question is, once I do grasp it, if I see it somewhere, is that cause to call it to your attention?

This also reminded me, I’ve mentioned it before, but Film and Jam are both in Laws of Attraction as the primary couple. Film’s character is a classic “I did bad things and so I’ve got a varied skill set I intend to use to help” archetype. But done a bit differently.

(This isn’t a spoiler, that’s the premise. Honest person with a strong sense of justice gets entangled with a cynical and duplicitous lawyer to set things right.)

@emmaaum No problem! I will keep that in mind! I’ll have to double check some of the new ones to make sure they don’t, as my client doesn’t animate them when I’m composing a post. I do, however know that both dance and heart are animated.

Also! I think there’s supposed to be a setting that can stop those for you. But I dunno how consistent it is on all clients if you use it. Actually which clients do you use?

And it’s not that weird, or if so, I relate? I just like being mesmerized.

At the very least it’s something I should have caught wind of. Especially with that casting. :blobcatthink:

Now I’m curious: did it suffer from being mid? Not “good” enough to pick up steam, not “bad” enough to be get attention that way? (Both being subjective terms, natch.)

@emmaaum Marry my Dead Body, which all promotional material I saw emphasized the comedy aspect.

And like, it may actually be as silly as all that, but also with some strong bittersweet. That’s a valid mode of storytelling and works really well, the contrast emphasizing each part. I just didn’t know it was that here.

@jonny Everything about this is confusing and unsettling.

Including the picture of the berry bowl.

It feels like the intro to one of those subtle horror video games that people make video essays analyzing for years.
