Attending Japanese HAM radio training: one day on regulations, one day technology.
Following the explanations in Japanese is ok, but answering these test questions is super hard. Many Japanese terms I never heard of.
Also for the tech part: you would think they use much Katakana based on English terms, but no: for almost everything relating to electric, native Japanese terms were invented..
Image descriptions have details.
I'm behind a 1GBit fiber connection from NTT. Took me years to get aware that I can replace their "home gateway" (where one plugs in the fiber and gets network out via 4 rj45 connectors) with a plain modem, and then run an own router behind that.
I did the switch this week, works really nice, recommended! Thanks to #OpenWRT on the router, I get traffic stats and more.
Just IPv6 setup took a bit longer: no delegation of a whole network segment is done, but DHCPv6 relay on the router works.
Word of the day: hikoshisoba/
Hikoshi is "to move houses", soba is buckwheat noodle. So these noodles were traditionally handed out to neighbours after moving in.
Occasion: a friend who is from France has built a house near Tokyo and just moved in. I guess he is quite decided where to spend his further life then :)
Memorising and citing classical Chinese texts is playing a role in Japan's education. I think Japan sees this completely as 'culture', and is not relating that to political relations with China.
Chinese texts are also used in education in Taiwan, and apparently influenced by politics there are now voices to change that.
So I used to worry about leap seconds causing problems. But with declining programming standards & increasing code brittleness, I wonder what will break this February 29th...
My wife used the word トリセツ to talk about our toddler. It's an abbreviation of 取扱説明書(とりあつかいせつめいしょ) or "user's manual." But can also be applied to how to handle people, such as celebs (and small children). #japanese
ASUS Chromebox 5 arrived so I installed Fedora and turned it into a server. I had a problem when installing Tianocore UEFI bootloader but I could solve it without heroic debugging effort thanks to coreboot/depthcharge firmware source code availability.
Now I can access it from my MacBook anytime I need an x86 system.
@fn_aki I got the first graphs this week from comparing power consumption of a certain task running on arm (raspi), x86, aarch64/macbook. If the efficiency extends like this to other compute tasks.. then the macs with Applesilicon make great and efficient servers. Just price is higher..
Article to follow, writing that right now.
@zhenech To watch something, or as further screen? Nah, using the mac internal screen would be better for that.
I never got into using multiple screens in parallel - but heavy user of virtual screens.
@alexziemianski@zhenech I'm using virtualization and emulation much, but directly with virsh/virt-manager/virt-install instead of Proxmos.
Using the steamdeck to measure it's power consumption under some workloads, and will then compare that with some arm and risc-v systems, to compare power efficiency. Will write an article when done.
@alexziemianski@zhenech
The steamdeck is not weak, but not beefy on memory either. I run virtualized x86 on a Thinkpad with 32GB, and emulation of x86 on Macbook with Asahi linux is also reasonably fast.
Tokyo had a bit of snow this week - and all hells broke loose :)
TV has tables with "what breaks down with 5/10/20cm snow", and does live coverage.
Cycling to work next day took a bit longer, but was fun.
@taseroth Depends very much on the location: Japan is covering more climate zones than Germany, from warm to cold. The amount of snow we just had in Tokyo makes people in Hokkaido, the big part in the north, just smile.
That huge range also is good to see with cherry blossom, which is kind of 'rolling' through Japan: https://sakura.weathermap.jp/en.php
