The most disappointingly simplistic thinking in tech, to me personally, is when people think just because something is being deployed IN education, in a classroom, or in a school, that means it's an unquestionable public good.

Instead of seeing the many, many complex ways that we take advantage of schools, or indeed damage schools, with our technology.

I'm always amazed by the strength of this association for people who haven't worked directly in education.

People who haven't been confronted with the staggering human toll of learner mismeasurement and adversity in trying to survive education: the thing that gives me the most hope about AI is shoving it in classrooms

People who have: 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮

@gvwilson I've read this one..I don't agree with all of it but much resonance

@wcbdata to me, how people relate to and see the public school system is one of the deepest ways you learn how people see the world. It is not one thing because it holds many systems, but the power of it is tremendous. We disparage and dismiss education throughout the US but in fact it is an incredibly powerful situation and the folks using it to get the power they want know that even while they try to keep most from seeing it.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@ngaylinn yeah or hedge fund managers; a lot of the people I'm talking about are in tech but aren't engineers!

grimalkina,

@wcbdata having grown up in, escaped, and then having fought hard against exactly the groups pushing homophobic hate in this country, I spent a great deal of time in 2020 trying to get LGBTQ+ students added to various commitments on equity in education only to be told again and again "this is not a focus... This distracts from other equity concerns..." Queer people in education all saw it coming many many years ago, this is part of what really broke me in that world, why I left it entirely.

Once more with feeling: Emma Smith's "Portable Magic" has been one of the most enjoyable reads of the last decade for me. Highly recommended. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/626187/portable-magic-by-emma-smith/ ★★★★★

I have a new paper! Together with r/worldnews on Reddit, I show how collective, good-faith human collaboration can steer algorithms to reduce the spread of unreliable news without needing to understand the underlying code.

The big challenge of this paper was to convince scientists that the question was worth asking at all — which took me SIX years.

Publishing the article required me to create a Rosetta stone for socio-technical science of human-algorithm behavior.

@natematias "And don’t worry; this deliberate academic process hasn’t held up this paper’s practical impact. As soon as I had results, I shared them with my collaborators at r/worldnews."

Bless.

It's time. I'm making a second jumpsuit. A SUMMER jumpsuit (linen).

@gvwilson is that...summery where you're from??

@gvwilson I do love a utility feature. Cuffs that you can store pens in, chef-style? or little memory sticks full of secrets? May require some interfacing. Ok, perhaps in the next shirt in the queue :)

It's a podcast day!!! VERY pleased to have gotten the chance to chat about my Developer Thriving research with the folks at Stack Overflow, a place I've profoundly benefited from and a community I love. We talk about developers' unique needs, how I hope we can give them data and evidence that helps them get those needs, and more! 💖

I loved getting the chance to talk about evidence science and causal inference on this delightful data-focused podcast (Casual Inference) with two scientists I've admired for a long time. Episode up now!

I have a great software engineering research manuscript that I'd totally share freely on CS arXiv right now except I can't find someone to endorse me to post on CS arXiv! 🤔 Debating putting it on psyarxiv where I have history. Does it matter?? I am not academic enough to parse whether there are deep social gatekeepings here. The struggles of being interdisciplinary AND applied.

If you are attending large events and you aren't emailing to ask them to include cleaning the air in their plans (eg setting up some filter fans/air purifiers in the space or otherwise ensuring high quality ventilation), you are forcing your disabled colleagues to be the only people speaking up for this and spoiler alert, it's awful. I don't want words about caring, I want the basic actions that make us all safer.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@pborenstein @sarah11918 I ask this too!! Very illuminating question and sometimes I end up giving recruiters some recommendations lol

It's Pride in our hometown to which my wife and I can't go because there is not a single event that I know of that will be remotely covid safe for someone like me. It's worse somehow when the exclusion comes from us of all communities that should know how to care. But no surprise.

Annie Dillard has this bit in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek about how we don't think about how we go our whole lives on this planet carefully angling our faces so we don't look at the sun.

To me, that is how we are with the vast majority of the social forces we are using and getting used by as we shape our sociocognitive world.

@magsol I know you pinged me a while back with a health note and I was at a conference then but was just thinking about you and wanted to send warmth and hope for continued progress getting care!!

@magsol sending you that hope!! I've had some new stuff that's been really difficult to deal with because I'm tired of new stuff but ultimately doing pretty all right 🙌

I got called for jury duty. I go in Wednesday. I am not thrilled that I could be compelled to sit next unmasked people for hours. I have an autoimmune disease that puts me at higher risk. I hope the judge considers that.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@DrPsyBuffy you can definitely write in for jury excuse with health condition as a reason. I do, with long covid
