You know, having my child's braces removal, additional tax advance payments, down payment for the private school I am about to send her to because Switzerland just can't cut it for her education (as in they have literally given up after this year and have nothing to offer us, so we had to go find something on our own), and having to pay for private therapy because Switzerland's mental health care system is a mess is like... a lot for one month on top of everything else and fucking inflation XD

(On the other hand, boy do I have a list for whenever my ex bitches about child support...)

For a couple of years now, a QAnon-type antivaxxer has been writing inflammatory anti-vax statements in chalk at the main bus stop in front of our main train station in Winterthur.

It is directly in front of a store, and was mostly ignored until they started writing things like "vaxxie lives don't matter", and suddenly, the store or the city started washing them off.

It was vaguely amusing when it was just "No sex with vaxxed people!". It seemed delusional and mostly harmless, though the people behind it were anything but as a group. But they escalated, and along with Swiss right-wing rhetoric, when it got to death wishes, I guess that was the line.

Anyway, they went away for a while, and then came back briefly, but were ignored again.

But tonight, in the same handwriting and place, there was a new message:

"Climate change is a lie."

So when people say we have to engage in dialogue with these folks?

No. They are part of a weird death cult and can fuck off into the sun.

@MostlyTato I'd be careful of writing off their intelligence, in that I've watched some people who were otherwise brilliant people fall into the whole propaganda trap.

Some of it, to be sure, is the inability to analyse. But there are others who are in this because of their own sheer arrogance, and THOSE people terrify me, because they do not mean well. They are not simply misinformed.

Almost four years in Switzerland and I think I can say that one of the greatest sources of stress for me is dealing with the goddamned trash.

9:30 pm on a Saturday night and I am on my way to the main train station to buy officially sanctioned trash bags at the one open grocery store because we are out and need to do Big Cleaning (tm) this weekend.

Just stopped at our favorite drive-through coffee shack (this is Washington after all). They asked my plans for the day, and I said I couldn’t do anything because my wife had Covid. Barista‘s response, “is that still a thing?“ 😬

They were out of dog bones. But they felt so bad for our dogs that they gave them bacon! The poor things will be forever disappointed when we come back in the future.

Poking around on the Internets tonight, while looking for something else, I fell into a bunch of commentary about the former almost-solo Thunderbird dev who got banned from the community and interacting with TBird developers/MLs/etc.

It is AMAZING what a bunch of people who don't know anything about the situation or person will speculate.

A little background: dude now runs his own fixed up fork of the TBird project.

All well and good. He's a talented guy and all and did a lot of the work for years alone.

But if you look at his project site, you also see (or at least saw, I haven't looked at it for years) that it's largely driven by his grudge for having been removed from the community.

I have some feelings about that, as I'll explain, but for now:

This thread I found was a ton of back and forth about whether this guy had done anything to deserve his ban, completely without reference to anything other than two emails he posted (one being his ban, and the other being his response to the council that banned him saying they needed to be dissolved) and a bunch of references to other Greats who were Once Assholes (tm) - e.g. Torvalds - and the usual argument about whether "But his work!" is a greater contribution than all of the people who quit because of them.

And I had to laugh, because there were guys who were just VEHEMENTLY defending the potential shit out of this guy, not even having used his product, because hey, communities don't have the right to tell you not to contact other people in the community!

Except they do, and there are reasons for that, and...

Well. Come along children and read my ill-advised thread...

After that conversation, I think (but it could have even been before, it's blurry, who knows), my boss and I had it out again.

I think perhaps the trigger was me confronting him about having the gall to tell other people that I did not mean it when I said I was considering leaving and blaming it on my mental health. I was certainly internally incandescent with rage about that, among other things. How fucking dare he?

I asked him if he really thought that wouldn't get back to me, and he basically started blaming the oversight member who'd told me.

See, he'd gotten it into his head that I could not possibly have come to that on my own, that I was being used, because I would NEVER do that on my own, right?

Remember when I said he underestimated me? I never actually disabused him of the notion that I had never been his pawn and didn't believe most of what he said, but in responding to him, suddenly, Boss realised I'd had a backbone all along.

I got accused of being an ungrateful wretch, and I gave him six months to find someone else.

And boy, am I glad I left.

The whole project with Dudebro never really did go anywhere, and the project he came from solved what our project was supposed to on their own.

The drama continues at that place. I occasionally hear about it, but in retrospect, it was a sick workplace.

But Internet-bros, let me just tell you something:

Next time you want to adopt the cause of some project rando with a manifesto about how they've been wronged just because you love FOSS and you like being contrary (and God FORBID a jerk ever have consequences for their actions?), just know that you, YES YOU, can definitely be wrong.

No, I certainly didn't prove anything here. I don't have to.

But I know it, and you know it.

Maybe go work on your own shit.

Because that dude is totally THAT GUY.

One last thing:

"BUT HIS WORK!" didn't really help the project.

Doesn't seem like there's a lot of his work that's led to anything at all here.

They still have nothing to show for any of this, really.

And maybe MY work wouldn't have either - I certainly wasn't steering the ship, I was just trying to keep my head down and keep it running.

And Dudebro, during our argument, rather snarkily said one other telling thing to me:

"Well, if I had to choose between my core developer and some app dev guy, I know I wouldn't choose me"

Which tells me rather precisely that he knew my boss wouldn't make a choice at all - so because I would eventually crack and tell Dudebro and the org (as a result) to fuck off, boss was effectively DEFINITELY choosing him.

He was positively smug about his manipulation of Boss's both-sidesing.

Just that I didn't care - the thing is, I fully believe in the maxim that if you make an ultimatum, you have already chosen the course you will take if that ultimatum is not satisfied.

It may be that you never have to go that route, but you had better have made peace with yourself that that is what you are going to do, because it probably will be.

But for the record, regardless of the impact (or lack thereof) of my work, me leaving certainly didn't help, and it turns out that the boss didn't actually tell people I was leaving until it was too late for them to prepare (and even then, he told people HE was moving ME off the project - true to form, if nothing else, but the reason I know that is because I HAD told people I was leaving and why months beforehand. My mother did not raise a fool).

Either way, it was a pretty stupid move from a management standpoint. I'm good at what I do.

And I'm much happier doing it for someone who values it, which I now do.

Ok, actually, a second last thing:

You know that famous ticket?

There were SOME just desserts.

The next day after his "this can't be rocket science" comment, there was another comment.

Something like this:

"Oh. So I just spent several hours into what looked like it should be an easy solution, and it turns out it IS rocket science." And then explaining, as if I didn't KNOW, why it wasn't trivial.

Fucker.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@mattcen True - I didn't realise it was going to be that bad, but it was clearly a massive error (pun intended, I think) which has now been corrected ;)

But I am happy to have entertained, and raise my fist in solidarity with all flaming boundary protectors ;)
