I remember a conversation with an executive who started the call with “I’ll start out out meeting by keeping quiet and taking notes. That’s me listening.”

Before long I felt a “ding” moment where the pretend-listening ended, his internal listening timer had run out

In that moment, he went back to being himself, disregarding everything I had said as if I hadn’t said a thing 😮‍💨

It was worse that he PRETENDED to listen worse than if he had just skipped the whole thing 😂

A few months ago I got to hang out with my friend's 4 year old son

He's very shy around most people -- but he opened up to me pretty quickly!

We took apart a toy accordion together, and he learned all the parts and how it worked 🪗

He was THRILLED
And it was so much fun for me, too!!

When it was time to leave, he asked his parents, completely seriously:

"Can Casey please live with us??"

Set calendar reminders, and pre-write messages so you can stop on top of it

intentionally misleading language

“Yes I emailed them about it. That was an email, but we don’t consider it an application or even a request. We won’t tell you what those words mean, but whatever you did was not it.”

Coping:

Remember that you requested it unambiguously!

And they are intentionally gaslighting you.

I feel better calling out their obtuse language. “What do you mean you emailed them a non-request request? What does that even mean?”

Coping:

I like to cc every contact we can find at a company!

Going through CFBP or BBB can get you more emails to include, so you can prove the emails went somewhere at least.

That removes a lot of the plausible deniability that they might not have received it.

Coping:

You CAN record calls on your end!

Even if it’s just your phone being on speakerphone and recording using your computer.

Just tell them “Please confirm you understand that YOU are being recorded as well.”

If they can ask, you can ask too!

You can also write out what they said and email THEM the notes.

There's some server configuration you can do to prevent this:

  • the 1st one you can ignore (assuming google isn't your sender!)
  • DKIM one is definitely important
  • the other two might be important, I haven't seen those before
