There are days when you really don’t want to look at Mastodon. What a terrible place today. Everybody and their brothers and sisters are posting their pictures of the #aurora. I have never seen one and when I went outside it was cloudy🙄. I will probably take a break and check in again when this “storm” is over … 😭

Wonderful news. The Gruber Foundation presents the 2024 Cosmology Prize to Marcia Rieke for pioneering work on astronomical instrumentation to reveal the breadth and details of the infrared universe.
https://gruber.yale.edu

(She was actually my teacher at the Vatican Summer School in 1993 and later I sat next to her at the MMT in Arizona conducting near-infrared observations. What a great person and scientist!)

Currently new #EventHorizonTelescope (#EHT) observations are happening. This is part of our enthusiastic and international team at the #IRAM 30m-telescope on Pico Veleta in Spain: Lott Frans (Univ Namibia), Noemia La Bella (@Radboud_uni ) and Pablo Torne (IRAM). Weather on past night was fantastic😊.

Some of the young scientists in the team who led the new Event Horizon Telescope polarization results and their culinary inspiration …. That has become sort of a tradition since some people misinterpreted our ring of fire as an orange donut 🤷🏼‍♂️ Not sure what happened to the color though.

(From left Freek Roelofs, Sara Issaoun and Angelo Ricarte. The first two did their PhD with me. So nice to see how they continue to take leadership in such a big collaboration 😊).

Shutting down the Chandra x-ray telescope is really a shame 🤔ESA’s XMM-Newton is still going, which actually has a larger collecting area, but it has poorer image resolution.

Great kick-off meeting of our project to make color movies of blackholes, funded by a Synergy grant of the Research Council . Partners from @Radboud_uni, University of , , , and will work together, build a new submm-wave telescope in Namibia, and develop a holistic model of black holes. Also talked about societal impact with the Namibian ambassador, who was present.

Hauptsache man zeigt Flagge. #noafd #Koelnstelltsichquer

News Alert: New image of the famous supermassive black hole in M87. The image was taken a year later and reveals the same rings size and shadow shape, confirming our results from 2019! The intensity maximum has rotated however. Not surprising, since matter rotates around a black hole. It is actually now, where you expect it to be.

It quacks like a BH, it looks like a BH, it is a BH!

In memoriam Harold V.J. Linnartz 1965 – 2023: Unlocking the Chemistry of the Heavens
On 31 December 2023 Prof. dr. Harold Linnartz passed away unexpectedly at the age of 58. Linnartz held the Chair for Laboratory Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, the Netherlands. He was a world leader in laboratory studies of gaseous and icy molecules in interstellar space. Linnartz also served as Education Director at Leiden Observatory.

Cool. The Moon will eclipse the Galactic Center (with its black hole in the middle, but its radio emission is swamped by the surrounding gas). Dutch radio astronomy amateurs will measure and stream this live.

Tip for early career scientists: please don’t skip over your conclusions and end your talk with a “thank you” slide.

We all know you are thankful, but we really would like to have a few moments while we go into discussions to go over your conclusions again.

(BTW, If you really want to thank us, then say so, but it sounds hollow if you write it on a slide at home before you even have met us 🤷🏼‍♂️)

New results from the : Detection of event horizon scale circular polarization (CP) in the supermassive black hole in M87.

We can tell it is there, but we have a hard time imaging it. So, this is a first step only. Modeling suggests that this CP comes from Faraday conversion, which is not unexpected. The models support the paradigm that magnetic fields are dynamically important (and lead to the formation of jets).

The Space Telescope is working and will start making a huge 3D census of the sky, hunting for dark matter.
The images themselves may not be that spectacular by themselves, but the entire data set will be. While looks deep and narrow, Euclid will look deep and wide …

Wer macht sowas? Die paar Gramm sind es nicht wert.
