Over on the digital lo-fi I wrote up a post about Steve Albini and what he meant to me as a musician, writer, aging GenX punk rocker. This all still feels unreal to me.
Been offline for a bit because I'm dealing with some IRL shit. This hasn't been helped by the news that Steve Albini has died. Dude was such a legend, engineered so many of my favourite bands and he even became a better person after a lifetime of being an edgelord dickhead. Will be spinning plenty of Big Black and Shellac today, along with Pixies, Nirvana, Breeders, The Wedding Present and lots of his other amazing work #rip#SteveAlbini
#RIP Pete McCloskey, a California congressman who raised a flag of rebellion against President Richard M. Nixon’s war policies in Vietnam with a spirited but futile race for the Republican presidential nomination in 1972, died on Wednesday at his home in Winters, Calif., west of Sacramento. He was 96.
It'd be impossible to come up with any sort of definitive list, especially a short one, of great songs in which Steve Albini was involved. But below are a few, in no particular order that have long appealed to me.
The end of the sidewalk where I got married. Our goal was to have the entire ceremony outside but the rain did not cooperate. So we had a small legal ceremony here and a larger one elsewhere.
My father-in-law died this past week, and while he did not have an easy go of it these past few years, he was a good man and I'm glad he was a part of my life.
I was struck though at the last thing I remember him watching. He plowed through hundreds of episodes of Gunsmoke. It struck me as a fitting final thing to watch. It was a show that lived a long life, and seemingly went on forever.
Henry Martin lived a long life. His tales seemingly went on forever.
I'm glad I was a part of those tales for more than a decade of his 82 years. #rip
