Getting more bios on Wikipedia for STEM pioneers of color, gender diversity:

This funded program gets students writing them at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), & Tribal Colleges & Universities (TCUs), recruiting instructors at those schools, who get training & support.

In 2022 they recruited more than 30. And they're looking for more:

    @kevin @csolisr @fediversenews If it were omitted, it wouldn't necessarily be arbitrary.

    @jeff Thanks!

    Mastodon’s growth trajectory is one of scalloped growth, not exponential growth.

    I’ve observed this same phenomena, but @hildabast presents it so much better in this good data-driven assessment of Mastodon’s growth!

    We can’t be exact about Mastodon’s growth, but we can observe key trends.

    New post, with a quick overview of Mastodon data – and some links to articles that I think capture this moment in digital media really well.

    Mastodon's growth, and communities branching: @PLOS

    @laurenshof @PLOS Drats! Do you mean the blog post, or the Google spreadsheet links inside it? (I just checked both in two browsers and didn't have a problem.)

    hildabast,
    @hildabast@mastodon.online avatar

    @laurenshof @PLOS Thanks - I'll read that today.

    My thoughts now (before reading it) are that ambiguity is inherent in the system, and you need to look at multiple sources before drawing any conclusion, and then communicate that with the best you've got for that purpose.

    hildabast,
    @hildabast@mastodon.online avatar

    @laurenshof I read it now - that was so interesting! I wish I knew what @Gargron means by "all currently existing Mastodon servers". What counts as a Mastodon server? Enough transparency that the data is interpretable matters so much.

    It'd be so great to see that data from the first gathered, too! 🙏

    I hate that there's still great content on twitter, but there's still great content on twitter. Here, a very good lesson from Johan Ugander.

    @ct_bergstrom There's so many great things to read all over the place - but Twitter is such a stress-zone that I don't mind missing out on what's there. Avoiding the place unless I need to look for something specific is so much better for my quality of life.

    Does anyone know why these two measures of users are so different? One says 11 million, the other says 6.6 million.

    Graph counting Mastodon users

    hildabast,
    @hildabast@mastodon.online avatar

    @darius @pearlbear Can you point me to for that (joinmastodon API only including servers that agree to the covenant)? JoinMastodon only lists those servers, but I haven't seen anywhere that this is related to the stats collection.

    hildabast,
    @hildabast@mastodon.online avatar

    @darius @pearlbear I just don't know - there's not enough transparency about what the different collections cover. (Just wrote about this again: https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/04/30/mastodons-growth-and-communities-branching/ )

    hildabast,
    @hildabast@mastodon.online avatar

    @tchambers @darius @pearlbear I doubt it, but I will try that sometime.

    Check-in on progress of development of pancoronavirus vaccines, to help protect us from whatever coronavirus spreads next:

    Part 2 of my update on next generation Covid vaccines, @PLOS

    Preclinical results released now for 17 vaccines that target more than SARS-CoV-2, with 3 in phase 1 clinical trials...

    More progress to report on intranasal & other mucosal Covid vaccine development in my latest @PLOS post:

    https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/04/21/progress-on-intranasal-oral-covid-vaccines-plus-a-us-government-funding-boost/

    There are now 5 authorized globally, 2 in China & 1 each in India, Iran, & Russia.

    An intranasal live attenuated vax from a US company, Codagenix, is well into phase 3. They hope to reach market next year, though it's not clear where

    (The vax is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India & the trial is in Africa.)...1/3

    This joke is pretty average...🤪
