Cool, de overheid heeft een Mastodon server online. Nog niet veel gebruikers dat snap ik helemaal.

Zie https://social.overheid.nl/explore

laurenshof,

@harld @eelcom heel veel eyeball emojis hiervoor ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€

heel cool, ben heel benieuwd

Mastodon, or some other similarly-scoped social-network platform, really needs to implement the "Circles" mechanic from Google+. Because that actually worked.

laurenshof,

@n8 you might be interested in @bonfire . in alpha testing now, and does pretty much this. you can test it out via https://campground.bonfire.cafe/

laurenshof, to threads

I count 12 posts made in the last 24 hours that are hashtagged with , and roughly 10 gazillion that are hashtagged with .

Just something to think about when you read another hot take someone is making about the impact that Threads will have on the social media landscape.

laurenshof,

just to be clear, im not claiming to know the secret answer here because I know the magic words DMA. The point is that it is so hard and unclear to know at this point what the DSA and DMA actually will do, and how itll impact the structure of the internet. And you should thus be a little bit more skeptical about any hard claim about what Threads is going to do that doesnt at least try to grapple with these questions.

From Lemmy. If real, its enough reason to keep these people out?

There is something interesting about the thought that if Threads gets ActivityPub support before the app is approved in the EU, then Europeans will have to join Mastodon to follow people on Threads.

laurenshof,

@anderspuck this would absolutely be the funniest timeline

Aqara's first Matter/Thread device is a new window/door sensor that... is huge and costs twice as much as Aqara's older sensors that use Zigbee.

laurenshof,

@dcseifert i wish i knew enough about smart home protocols so i could do a hot take post about Thread and confuse everyone

matthieu_xyz, to Futurology

As I expected, more that the privacy issues or the number of users. The problem with Threads is going to be the moderation (reason why I advocate to silence/limit them).

I'm not surprised libsoftiktok tried to join, I just want to know how long it will take to ban them, if they get banned at all...

laurenshof,

@matthieu_xyz yeah libsoftiktok will be a pretty great bellweather for how threads does moderation

So this is probably a decent measurement of the peak of 's hype curve.

Just checked the masto post history of someone with a decent following here and on Twitter and who went to and seemed excited about BlueSky

Heavy posting here up to March.

After 22 April ... no posts
... until 6 June and ...
now they're somewhat active here again.

1.5 Months. Google+ was effectively dead after what ... 6 months? Maybe worth remembering. Hype + social media is probably not a good thing??

laurenshof,

@maegul ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ?

maybe someday people will figure out that you cannot really build a social network on hype, and that community building is hard, and tiresome work

laurenshof, to random

I saw a demo of , and it looks great!. In itself its a project to keep track off, because its pretty freaking cool. But also to keep in mind that behind the scenes new fedi projects are being created that can really alter the understanding of what microblogging on fedi actually is. I

I mean at least on Meta's servers my data will only leak to the FBI as the result of a FISA warrant or a subpoena or similar and not just because they raid some random person's house for an unrelated reasonโ€ฆ

laurenshof,

@hrefna ooof ๐Ÿฅฒ

glad you keep talking about this though, its an important and painful part of the conversation around threads

for the non dutchies: Im sure youve all seen the Discourse that with Twitter preventing public access to tweets is a big issue of stuff like emergency services and weather warnings.

This is now already playing out in Amsterdam. Theres a bit of a storm, so the fire department send out an emergency text message to everyone. The first version included a link to twitter to follow the latest updates. Then they realized, and a second version that went to a different region (as the storm travelled there) got a warning message without the twitter link.

I think the quote by the press person from the fire department really says it all: "We don't check every day if everyone can still read our tweets"

Considering that Amsterdam is the first municipality to run their own Mastodon server, it seems like the solution is right available

gets a (new) search engine

It already had search (with some rough edges), but people are already making their own to fill specific needs ... chiefly it seems to replace the Google site: reddit.com search facility.

See ...

https://www.search-lemmy.com/

Interesting to see a platform culture completely embrace being open and public.

@fediversenews

laurenshof,

@maegul @fediversenews yeah this is so cool and fascinating. Completely different culture on lemmy with regards to search. And I keep being surprised by how separate the communities are. It barely registers on the masto feeds as news

laurenshof,

@maegul yeah agreed on the not actually really being connected. I think youre correct with the UI impedances, but I think its a culture as well, of people not actually being interested in interacting much. I see some comparisons with misskey in that sense, where I dont think that Western masto is really connected with japanese misskey.

Also a hachyderm-style governance kbin/lemmy server would go so hard, id love that so much

laurenshof,

@aliceif @maegul in general is federation between lemmy and microblogging kind of iffy, definitely doesnt work as well as it should. Out of curiosity, what happens if you search for an individual lemmy thread on misskey? can you find that, and comment on it?

I'm not suggesting that Bluesky is looking the other way as bots flooded the platform in the last couple of weeks because the bots are (for now) liking and boosting anything posted by former Twitter influencers. No, I'm not saying that all. Even if average engagement per "skeet" jumped 5x-10x over the same timespan. I'm not saying that at all because there would be no way to prove such a suggestion b/c they don't make such data available for analyses. Glad we could clear that up.

laurenshof,

@DataDrivenMD @mariyadelano @blaise this is a great thread. very interested in this.

As a side note: I made the observation the other day that there are actually a lot of unused invite codes sloshing around in the system. When there was the whole 'cis is a slur' thing on twitter the other day, bluesky handed out an extra code to everyone, which increased signups by some 10k, even though an extra 150k codes where handed out.
that really puts into perspective that codes might be hard to come by. Anecdotally, every time I've posted about this I get comments from other people as well saying that they have multiple invite codes that nobody is interested in.

@Peternimmo (and others who have good tips) someone i know is potentially interested in joining fediverse. currently mainly uses twitter for theology. do you know some interesting accounts to follow related to theology and news around this? shes into the more academic side of liberation theology etc
