“At Microsoft, the share of senior employees as a portion of the company’s overall workforce declined more than 5 percentage points after the return-to-office mandate took effect, the researchers found. At Apple, the decline was 4 percentage points, while at SpaceX — the only company of the three to require workers to be fully in-person — the share of senior employees dropped 15 percentage points.”

In the spirit of making lemonade from🍋🍋🍋this week, I’d like to find a venue that might publish a scholarly piece informed by personal experience on tech, governance, disability (lack of) accommodations, institutional wealth & DEI hypocrisy. It’d be partly historical but not something that would fit in a history journal. Maybe a journal interested in tech and politics or tech and power that covers multiple disciplines…(1/2)

(2/2) bonus if it’s a feminist venue. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance all, & I hope you don’t need to make lemonade too🫡🍋

@StephanieMoore it does have a higher ed context but I’m not sure that’s the primary framing I’ll use. It will include research and analysis in addition to the personal experience bit. Thanks!

I think I'll spend this day of my week off popping into a used record shop and hopefully get a few cheap items! If there's any energy left after that I might go to the park with a few oats and feed the ducks 🙂

"The Computer Girls" from Cosmopolitan Magazine (April 1967). "Now have come the big, dazzling computers--and a whole new kind of work for women: programming. Telling the miracle machines what to do and how to do it...And if it doesn't sound like women's work--well, it just is."

@rheinze @istuetzle thank you for the shout out! I assume everybody has said Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly already!🩵 (I am actually working on a project at the University of Virginia with her right now as she extends her work from the book to find more women. It’s called The Human Computer Project and hopefully will have some output to share within the next year or so!)

WaPo says will have a 93% with a peak at 3:29pm.

This is mostly a note to me, because I keep forgetting to put it on my calendar.

You can enter a city for an estimate.

They're bulldozing established neighborhoods right outside Chicago to put up data centers. Hope all the AI hype is worth this infrastructural shift because once there’s extra capacity, they’re going to use it even if the technology doesn’t work as intended🙃

histoftech,
@histoftech@mastodon.social avatar

Even though the title is "Elk Grove homeowners cash in" this masks the fact that land developers have been hounding these homeowners for years to try to redevelop their homes into something industrial. Not a fun position to be in for homeowners--worrying for years about displacement.

histoftech,
@histoftech@mastodon.social avatar

@tdietterich I hear that, but a lot of the residents did not want to move, they had been resisting this attempt to get them to sell their homes for years, from multiple different waves of businesses, & there isn’t really any reason that these data centers needed to be right there as far as I can tell. Did your cousins move due to a buyout?
